I'll be attending Goard's game on Friday. I'll be sure to post stats and my thoughts. Looking forward to seeing him play.

Inquiring minds want to know:

Can he rebound?

Can he play inside defense?

Can he fill out to be somewhat of a power forward?

Hey Mountain State Cat where are you from. I went to GW and played football with the basketball coach Rick Greene. I played some football at OU as well. Rick and I used to be pretty good friends but I have not seen him since I left Charleston in 1973.

Friday night (2/4/11), Goard's team, George Washington, defeated Martinsburg 57-47. George Washington is 13-2 and No. 6 AAA school in West Virginia right now. Martinsburg is 9-6 just to give you an idea of what the competition was like.

Goard's line....8-11 field goals, no 3s attempted, 2-4 from the line, 16 rebounds — 7 offensive, 18 points, 3 assists, 4 blocks, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 29 minutes of action.

He had game-highs in points (18), rebounds (16), field goals made (8) and blocks (4).

He looked good. It's a balanced team, so he wasn't forced to do more than he could handle. They never really fed the ball to him in the post to let him back in, yet he was the tallest player on the floor listing on the team's roster as 6-8, 203. That kind of interested me. He can run the floor extremely well in transition. There were several ally-oops converted and not converted. He went from scoring on one end to blocking a shot or grabbing a board on the ensuing defensive possession many times.

He can play defense inside. If he couldn't box out for the board, he got several with his long arms down on the floor or taking away from another.

Overall, I would say a great pickup for the 'Cats. I'm a younger alum, but if I had to compare his build to anyone of recent, I would say DeVaughn. He's got a good frame already, but with some more time in the weight room, could be a beast who can run up and down the floor.

Great report, Mountain State!

Hope he can make an immediate impact on our roster re:  toughness.

I get to see highlights of his games on WSAZ, but it's not like seeing him in person.

Martinsburg normally is a good team.  They usually play schools from the DC area.

Thanks for the update/review!  If he is really 6'8'' 205 right now, then he may end up closer to 230 by the time he leaves Ohio......if he can keep that same athletic ability while adding that muscle....watch out!

From Sunday's box score in the paper against Ripley — George Washington won 69-51. Goard was 8-11 from the field and 1-3 from the line for 17 points to go with 8 rebounds.

Ripley has Chase Fisher, a guard I believe, who is committed to Wake Forest. Fisher scored 34, but Goard's team got the win. The article on the game says Goard had two big dunks in the fourth quarter, including a tomahawk jam.

Fischer has been putting up unreal offensive numbers.  From tape I've seen of him, he appears to have a very quick release on his shot.

Ted, when I went to GW it was listed as top 100 in USA and top in WVA. I brought the standards down but made it into OU so what's that say.

Probably safe to say that GW is the best HS in WV for academics and general pretense. The most affluent zip code in the non-DC parts of West Virginia, 25314. If it was good enough for Jennifer Garner, it's good enough for your kid.

He has been described to me by those who see all his home games as something of an athletic freak and highlight show on the offensive side. But, he sees very few plays or offense run to him. High effort/motor. Clearly is a guy who gets his points in transition and on put-backs right now. Something of a blank slate for his next coach, IMO. Grades out well on attitude, work ethic, classroom etc. Seems to be a good kid who will have none of the transcript/preparation issues common at the other Charleston area schools that can't seem to get guys eligible for D1 (cough.......South Charleston.......Capital.....cough).

Right now, he 'looks' like a pro guard, but unless he has a game beyond 12' that no one has seen in the MSAC, odds are that he will fill out and get bigger as described above. Am told he wears a giant shoe and likely still has not topped out in height. Definitely can defend 3 and 4 at this level eventually.

Hard to judge MSAC kids......it's the best big school league in WV, but HS basketball over here is generally terrible by Ohio standards. League is pretty uneven and slow on pace.

There have been two high major successes from it in the last 10 or so years- Brett Nelson and Patrick Patterson, with Moss & Jason Williams a few years before that. Tamar Slay was NBA-drafted too. But most of the 'star' kids from this league have sat benches in some pretty mediocre college leagues. Lot of kids who ended up as blenders at Radford or Elon. Oddly, the league has placed a lot more high major womens players. I know little of his AAU or other summer activity.

Haldeman, thanks!

I get to see highlights of Tyquane's games quite a bit on WSAZ...most highlight shots are alley oop dunks.  Someone else said he resembles Devo physically, and that appears to be true.  Last night, it showed him making a pass from between the low and high block to an open three point shooter who nailed the shot.

Akron has a kid from Nitro--McClanahan...not sure if they are in the MSAC.  But Haldeman is right...the best players from this league generally are decent mid major players, with an occasional high major kid.

I'm excited that Tyquane seems to have some good qualities to work with at Ohio.

Nitro is the same conference or it used to be, it was called KVC (Kanawha Valley Conference) back when I played.

Point this out to my wife and kids every year when we pass the exit sign and get the same "who cares" response.

Was surprised to see McClanahan get interest at the MAC level. Good for him. Am told his Dad is an expert at Priceline bidding in Cleveland like my peer group.

Nitro is likely headed to a lower division and different league longer term; shrinking population base and lack of hoops/FB recent success will send them to the more appropriate Cardinal Conference.

The MSAC as now constructed is really too big, especially for the non-attended sports. Parkersburg, Beckley, 3 Huntington area schools, all the large schools in Kanawha County, Ripley, and a few outliers like Greenbrier East and the new school in Lincoln County. Is headed for a scheduling confederacy approach like the OVAC unless they drop some schools.

Those places are The Hills Have Eyes destinations......some of the exits off of the turnpike have no re-entry ramps.....gotta be one of the most ancient and spookiest places around........all kinds of legends of Vikings and Irish and Welsh and others roamin around before Columbus.

from the charleston daily mail...

Tyquane Goard had 10 of his game-high 20 points in the first quarter to get George Washington  (19-3) off to a quick start in finishing the regular season on an eight-game winning streak with a 65-43 win over Parkersburg South.

I believe GW opens the playoff season Wednesday with a home game.

Goard got 16 points and 10 rebounds in an easy 82-60 first round playoff victory for GW (20-3). They play again friday against Capital in the regional.

Tyquane had 22 points and 14 rebounds last night as the Patriots won their 11th straight and now advance to the state tournament. GW is 22-3 and ranked No. 3 in the biggest division in WV (AAA).

Yeah - I get that too. This route I found sparks more interest - "Hey, do you know where the player on the NBA logo came from?" Works at least the first time...........
