Ohio has received a verbal commitment from 2011 small forward prospect Tyquane Goard of George Washington (Charleston, WV) High School. He averaged 12.4 points per game last season and chose Ohio over offers from VCU, Marshall and Delaware.

[quote]February, 2009: Goard has incredible length and athleticism which he uses to make plays on the defensive end. He has great defensive instincts and plays very good on-ball as well as help defense. Goard runs the court very well and with added strength which he really needs, he will become a better finisher in transition. He also blocks shots very well as an on-ball defender. Goard unselfishly passes the ball and has good vision. He needs to improve his shooting ability as well as his ball-handling skills, given the fact that his defensive abilities rank far ahead of his offensive skills at this point of his career.[/OUTER_QUOTE]

After some searching around I found a Cleveland Sate board that said he had offers from Penn State, Delaware, Dayton, Cleveland State, VCU, and Marshall.
That may have only been interest instead of actual offers since the source probably isn't very reliable.  Also looks like he verballed to Delaware in August.  Intersting that he signed with us after attending the Delaware game.

It will be nice to have a tall wing player again. Something that Marquis Horne could have been. We haven't had someone with good height and guard skills since Justin Orr.

Why not an LOI from Goard? Aren't we still in the early signing period? Let's get this player locked up, so to speak.

I believe he has signed, I would expect an official announcement soon.

I was hoping that if we were opting to use both of the remaining scholarships after Alex Kellogg left, we would go after a center and an athletic combo forward. Looks like Goard could fit the latter. Let's get that 6'9''+ big guy now.

That's my highschool, he will be the second stud to play sports for Ohio. I played football. Check out their football team, No. 1 in West Virginia and always great in football and basketball.

Seems like a replacement for Sayles role as a defensive specialist.  Should be a nice option when we need a bigger wing on defense to help out inside.

Wonder if there'll be a blurb from Chuck Landon of the Charleston Gazette to the effect that "Ohio got a player not good enough for Marshall"...even though Goard had an offer from Marshall?

Defensively talented and unselfish...I like it.  With the size and athelticism this kid has the potential to really blossom.

Definitely ironic that he visited a game in which we were playing a team he originally verballed to.

tyquane's season opening effort, from the Dec. 11 charleston daily mail....

Tyquane Goard, a 6-foot-7 Ohio University recruit, led GW with 23 points, 18 rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals - all team highs. A notoriously bad foul shooter in past seasons, Goard netted 7-of-8 from the line and also threw down three slam dunks.

Tyquane Goard scored 19 points plus he had 6 rebounds and 6 steals to lead GW over Capitol 74 to 48 last night.   Tyquane has the nickname "Turk"  anyone know how his nickname came about ?

I saw some GW highlights on WSAZ recently; they were focusing on Goard and his dominance of the game.  He looked strong.

He sounds like a gamer. Next year Kellogg can fill the 2 positon based on what he's doing so far this year wth Goard potentially at the 3 makes the Bobcats more athletc in the front court.

I know he's listed as a small forward.....but at 6'7" and 16 boards I'd love to see him put on a few pounds and play inside....where we need help.

Goard was named second team all state. Today's Charleston Daily Mail said he's averaging 18.3 points per game, I beleive 12.4 rebounds and about 4 block shots but those stats are hard to get as GW doesn't list their stats. Most sites say he's 6'8" but at about 200 lbs he is really thin.

Wonder how much Flomo he has in him.

My thoughts exactly Shab, I think Goard and Smith could really be formidbale shot blockers.  Both are athletic and LONG.  We haven't had a true shotblocker since Flomo left.  Having that protection at the rim allows our guards some leeway when pressuring the ball and makes a huge difference.  Right now it's a walk in the park to the rim and that needs to change.
