According to Arkley's Twitter Feed he's going to be a Bobcat.  Will sit out next year per transfer rules.

This thread was first, so I'll post what I had in the other thread.

Looks like Ohio has another new player. Originally a 4 star recruit in 2010. He played two years at Texas Tech.

Averaged 8.1 ppg this past year. He will be eligible in 2013-14.

Ha, I think you beat me by 5 seconds.

Rivals had him as the #74 player in the entire recruiting class of 2010.  Highest rated player to be a Bobcat in recent memory.   Don't know much about him yet but just seeing the offers and rankings I can say I'm excited about this one.  Well done JC.

I know stats don't tell the whole story, but they don't look so good to me. Maybe I'm missing something.

It probably has something to do with Billy Gillispie:  http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/26283066/31496050

Willis is now the third player from last season's Tech team to transfer: http://redraiders.com/sports-red-raiders-mens-basketball/2012-05-04/willis-transfer-tech-basketball-team#.T6U0peivhWU

That being said, I'm very excited about this transfer. I don't know if we've ever had a major conference transfer, let alone a starter transfer in from a major conference. It appears JC offered him back at TCU while Javarez was a 4 star recruit (Rivals). I'm assuming that's where they developed the kind of relationship that would lead him to jump ship to Athens.

We've struck gold on couple of our most recent transfers under Groce. Jim Christian may keep trending in the same direction.

no comparison-Walt didn't play much there as I recall. Right or not?

Stats impacted by the type of offense Gillispie ran at Tech.  I don't really know what his role was other than playing the point.  I did read that Willis is best known for lock down defense.  Gillispie was quoted as saying that he was one of his top two or three players re:  practices and games.

Had a 30 point + game with 10 3's in high school.....me thinks he can score and play some D.

If JC brings in JUCO's or transfers I hope they are either role players or impact players......looks like we have the role player in Wilkins (3 point shooter) and Willis could be the impact player.

I feel better about the JC hire already.....and it looks like he's more than D:

Thanks for the link. Definitely looks like this guy can square up and shoot the 3. His ball-handling skills seem impeccable too.

Shaun Stonerook - starter at Ohio State came to Athens.   LaDrell Whitehead, while not from a major conference, a starter transfer who was very good.  Johnnie Jackson....oh wait.

I like this signing a lot.  Lookin' forward to seeing what Jim finds in the way of freshman recruits for the next recruiting period, because those are going to be crucial to sustaining the program at the high level we all are dreaming about.

Perfect in the sense that he will be able to help replace DJ big time.  We'll have to find the right balance with him and Stevie...they will be in the same class.  Which one will be our QB1?  Time will tell.

No way you can't be excited about this.  Looking more and more like we won't have a class of 2016, or at least not a 4 year player in that class.  I'm OK with that...returning your entire roster is fun!

I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them sign a freshman PG in the next recruiting class.  Seems like Willis could probably be a combo guard so there is some flexibility.

I may end up being excited but this move doesn't excite me much right now.  Being a starter on a Big 12 team is fine but when that team wins 1 conference game and ends the season 1-18 that sort of eliminates that being a plus.   He was the starting PG on a team that was 2nd to last in the nation in turnover frequency.  His assist to turnover ratio is bad. He doesn't steal the ball much.  Again, I'll reserve judgement until I see him play but my initial impression is more one of worry than it is of excitement.

OUVan-news flash:  The MAC is not the Big XII!   He will be playing Bowling Green NOT Baylor, Kent NOT Kansas and K-State,  and a a directional Michigan NOT Missouri.  So, it would be wise to withhold judgement until the guy at least gets on the floor and plays.

News flash - His numbers weren't any better against the patsies they played outside the Big XII.   And the talent level in the Big XII isn't as vast as you make it sound.  Texas Tech would have had a hard time beating BG and Kent last year.  And I said I would reserve judgement but you'll have to excuse me that I'm not doing cartwheels just because we got a Big XII player.

I checked out Willis' stats for his freshman season, under Pat Knight and a little better team.  His shooting percentages weren't that good, but his assist to turnover ratio was better (40 to 31) than in his sophomore season.  Plus, his assists per minute played were better as a freshman.

As a team, Tech was MUCH more careless with the ball under Gillispie.

Also, it appears that Ty Nurse actually may have been their PG during Willis' soph season and that Willis was an undersized two guard.  Hard to say.  I'd love to talk to someone down there and get their take.

My point here is that with the change of coaches and personnel at Texas Tech, his stats may not tell the whole story.  Plus, some of his defensive skills won't show up on the stat sheet.

I can see why there is concern about the signing.  My feeling is the past is history.  The guy hass a new lease on his basketball life.  Like most on here, I will wait to see how he performs on the court..  Obviously, the jury is still out.

Javarez is a former 4 star recruit, has had great experiences as the starting guard against powerhouse programs like Kansas, Mizzou, Texas, Baylor, and K-State among others, and is a lock down defensive specialist. He'll have a year to learn the system like Smith and Offutt did, and will be ready to step in when D.J. moves on. This is a great get. Welcome aboard Javarez.
