Thanks for the numbers, brucecuth.  It's encouraging to see Joe Mitchell putting up these kind of stats while playing for a respected juco program in one of the toughest leagues in the USA.   Most importantly, it's good to see that Hutchinson is 7-0.

Our roster sure could use a guy who's a play maker, can create offense and put the ball in the hoop.  I hope this is the type of guy we're getting next year.

I gather that this guy will really help us and that his leadership--ability and fire to get to W--will be much appreciated in the Roundhouse.

That was a very well written article.  Not just some ill-informed blogger spouting opinions.

I'll have to say that I'm very impressed with the potential Joe Mitchell has to be a good player at Ohio.  I wish him well for the remainder of this season at Hutchinson academically and athletically.

This also goes to show you that some jucos are very well organized with excellent coaching.  Coach Eck has a very good reputation in the coaching field.  Plus, they play in one of the best juco leagues.

More on Joe from the Hutchinson News...

"Then there's sophomore guard Joe Mitchell. A 6-1 Wichita native who signed early with Ohio might go down as one of the best Blue Dragons in history. Already among the top 20 scorers in school history, Mitchell shot 54 percent and averaged 19.1 points a game. But what has made the unselfish and humble Mitchell even more valuable is his all-around game. His 5.2 rebounds rank fourth on the team. His 59 assists lead the team. His 16 steals are third most.

While Mitchell may not get the notoriety as former HCC guards Bobby Maze and Darius Johnson-Odom, Eck said Mitchell is as valuable.

"Joe could have gone to the Big 12, Pac-10 or SEC like others did," Eck said. "But Joe doesn't seek more recognition or anything. He just goes out there and plays."

Mitchell also shines at the free-throw line by shooting 81.7 percent (98 of 120). Take away Mitchell's free-throw shooting, and Hutchinson could be classified as a dreadful foul shooting team at 57.9 percent.

Update on Hutchinson and Joe Mitchell:

Hutchinson is now 14-0 and ranked #1 in the nation among JUCOs!

Joe's stats:  19.1 ppg/ 54.1% FG / 35.5% 3 pt. FG/  only 31 of 146 FG attempts have been threes / 81.7% FT/  5.2 rebounds per game/  4.2 assists per game, leads team

While looking up this info on Joe, I noticed another one of Joe's teammates named Robert Goff out of Indianapolis.  Just by looking at still photos of him, I thought, "This would be a coup if we could get this guy."  6-9, 230 lbs.  Chiseled physique.  Unfortunately, ANOTHER OU has him locked up...he's already signed with Oklahoma.

Maybe tiptondevilcat could tell us more about Goff.

Keep in mind Steve Eck is a very good coach who demands a strong effort on both ends of the floor.

Pay attention here.  All indications are that this guy's the kind of player.  Winning and hard nose.

This guy.  The Blue Dragons are 17-2 and Joe M is averaging (on 18 games worth of stats)  53.8% (10 shots per game), 32.5% on (13-40) on 3-pointers, 80% on 8 free throws per game), 5.4 rebounds, 4.3 assistst, 3 turnovers and 1 steal.  Numbers could be even bigger with a little help from the official scorer.

Mitchell was named 1st team, All Conference, averaging 18.2 PPG, 52% shooting, 30% 3 point shooting.  He has scored in double figures in 61 of his 63 junior college games.  He will add some scoring potential to the line up for sure.

I cannot say that I have a firm basis for alleging this, but I believe that Mitch will bring some VERY NEEDED toughness.  Hard-nosedness.

Can't wait.

Is your lumbago acting up and that's how you divine this prophecy?  Because we know you wouldn't want to trust anything weird like evidence.  Just in the gut, right?  Like a real man?  Don't need no proof.  It's all a feeling!  Why even trust the final score?  Why, it's about which team LOOKS like they're playing better!

Here is a profile on Mitchell from a couple weeks ago that I don't think has been posted:

I wonder if Goff will try to get a release from Oklahoma now that Capel has been fired.  If so, he'd be a huge get for us and possibly the piece that would put us over the top the next two years.  However, he's also considered the #3 Juco PF in the country, so competition for him would be fierce.  We'd need Joe Mitchell to do some serious recruiting, and would also have to hope that Groce had previously developed a relationship with him when he was coming up through Indianapolis...

Edit: According to this thread Goff's numbers haven't been stellar this year, but he's supposed to be a strong defensive presence.  Perhaps competition wouldn't be quite as fierce as I thought at first, should he decommit:

Also, I don't believe anyone has noted yet that Joe was ranked the 36th best Juco recruit in the country by JucoJunction, ahead of a number of players going to quality programs:

And I think those ratings were pre-season.  Based on his very good season, he might actually be rated higher now.
