more on Joe from his original signing with hutchinson...

Hutchinson Community College men's basketball coach Steve Eck announced his fifth signing for the 2009-10 season.

The Blue Dragons have signed Wichita Southeast All-State guard Joe Mitchell to a letter-of-intent.

Mitchell is a 6-foot-1 combo guard who played on Southeast's 2009 Class 6A state runner-up team and 2009 Class 6A state championship team.

"He's scorer and a good defender," Eck said. "He is a nice shooter who knows how to play the game. Some considered him to be the best guard in the state."

Mitchell averaged 22 points per game in his senior season with the Buffaloes. He was a consensus all-state player by the Wichita Eagle and Topeka Capital-Journal.

Mitchell is the fifth player Eck has signed for the 2009-10 season. He is the third in-state player.

What was his recruitment like out of highschool?  Any insight into why he decided to go the JUCO route?

Any scouting report that highlights being a smart and defensive oritented player is good in my book!

A combo guard with ability to score.  Not a bad pickup. I believe Mike Allen was also from Hutchinson so this route has worked for us.  As with Juco's its hit and miss.  For every Mychal Green and Mike Allen's there have been the BW4, Ken Ottrix, Allen Hesters. Sounds like Mitchell has game and will be a big help atleast as instant offense off the bench.  16 ppg as a freshman on any college level is impressive.  With Groce you figure he liked what he saw and locked him up before he signed with another mid major from the MAC, Horizon or MVC .

I do like the 32 points in the regional quarterfinal game described in the linked article.  10 for 11 in FG, and 6/6 on free throws, 2/3 from behind the arc.   Ten rebounds and 3 assists.  Very respectable game.  Joe, eager to see you in the Bobcat green and white!!

You can never have too many shooters. Now we should just round out this recruiting class with a nice 6'8+ big man and I'll be happy.

Hutchinson CC is one of the better programs in one of the top juco leagues in the nation.  On paper, this looks like a very solid pickup for Ohio.

Not sure I understand the need to go the JUCO route.

Agree with you in principle.  I prefer 4 year players over a JUCO or a transfer.  However, if you can supplement the team, then it can make some sense.

More specific to the situation at hand, I'll give Groce plenty of rope here.  It's our first JUCO commit in his tenure here, if I'm not mistaken.  Doesn't seem like it's a preference of his, which makes me think this is a guy who could really fill our system.

Having a couple of JUCOs on a roster makes sense for a midmajor program because of the increase in attrition and turnover primarily through people transferring out.  It's a way to plug the gaps.  Kent State is really emphasizing it right now.

I just don't agree with what some programs do...e.g., mcbin's favorite program, Lamar, recruits 80% JUCOs.

Recruiting from the better JUCO programs in Kansas and Texas is a pretty good bet.

OUr last JUCO out of Kansas worked out pretty well...  Mike Allen, Cloud County CC...

I read somewhere that he was 5-11 coming out of HS, so if he was a DJ Cooper 5-11  that might have scared some people away.  As Borna would want us to point out, a lot of people are shooters...  This kid looks like a maker.  We are going to need that after Tommy graduates.  Back to the size, he is listed at 6-2 now, whether he was a legit 5-11 or not, 6-2 is definitely a big jump for a SG.

We have one more for this year?  Definitely hope for a PF...  Noticed Hall was listed as a PF on our recruiting board.  Thought he was more of a SF?  Anyone who has seen our fresh have some insight?  Where he figures to contribute would surely have some play on what exactly we recruit.

Kudos to you for correctly remembering that Micheal was a Michigan kid out of Cloud Community who had groundwork laid by Townsend.

I was fortunate to be in the Convocation Centre with some of the HS coaches I am familiar with this last open period hosted by Coach Groce and staff. What I gleaned from Open gym and sessions is that the incoming frosh are very versatile. Hall can play the PF spot as thick as he is and will give the Cats and good look with Ethan Jacobs , Ivo Baltic or Devaughn  Washington moved over to the 5 for a spell. Very much doubt that Hall will move a mature , seasoned Mr Freeman off the SF spot unless Coach moves his shooter out to the SG spot as he did in several rotations. Nick is also as versatile with really advanced shooting and ball handling abillities. he will be at the 1 and 2 spot with ample playing time. D-mac also played some point in the Bahamas but like last year will probably play early then have to find time as the season progresses.

Ricardo is really nice defensively, trailing shooters through screens and has no qualms about taking a shot, really, taking any shot. I have a feeling the staff is going to try to dial him in as to what shot he should be taking and what they are specifically looking for out of a 3-4 type of player. Nice first step and adequate ball handling abilitites.

This is a pretty versatile bunch of guys who can mix up Groce's multi screen and roll offense and really not be out of sorts in most any position on the floor. If they are as unselfish as they are talented they should be in very good shape . Just my observations over 3 practices. I like this bunch. If the fire inside Msrs Washington, Freeman and Cooper to get back is strong they will influence the young guys who are already hungry in a very good way.

For 2011 were looking at Cooper and Taylor at the point with Offutt ,N. Kellogg and Mitchell at the 2.  3 looks to be Johnson and Hall with the 4 spot being Baltic, Smith, A. Kellogg.  Center position would be Keely and Jacobs.

1 one spot left.  We likely will need to play the season and find our where these players are at in their development before we use the last spot. Consider the exits from the program last year its a smart move giving us a roster spot that can be filled.

my guess is someone will leave program within the next year.  don't know who or why, just seems to happen more often than not...so you can never have to many players...

While we're talking about the wisdom of JUCO recruits, we ought also be discussing the merits of all the transfers as well.  While a change in scenery can make a big difference in productivity, I'm wondering what is so appealing about a 2-3 point guy as a transfer who has to sit out a year.

As much as Armon did for OUr Bobcats. I truely have respect that Coach Groce has the capability to help some of these young men and change their lifestyles. Help them realize  that they can be able to reach their goals. As stundent athletes. As well as represent Our communitty.

Yeah but he was BW4. B W 4. And that wasn't his nickname. That was his actual initials. It doesn't matter how good you are as a person or player when your name is BW4.

Joe Mitchell is officially a Bobcat!

Ohio head men's basketball coach John Groce announced a pair of players will be joining the fold in 2011 with the additions of Stevie Taylor (Gahanna, Ohio) and Joe Mitchell (Wichita, Kan.)

"Our immediate concern that we desired to address with our 2011 recruiting class was ball-handling and decision-making at the guard position," Head Coach John Groce said. "Joe and Stevie both provide abilities in both areas that help complement our returning players. Our staff is very excited about adding their talents to our team. We are even more thrilled about their collective passion for the game and their excitement to be a part of what we are building at Ohio University."

[quote]Mitchell has been compared to former Kansas Jayhawk Sherron Collins in numerous recruiting circles and is currently playing at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. Last season, he was named the Jayhawk West Conference Freshman of the Year, earning First Team All-Jayhawk West Conference and First Team All Region VI honors. He averaged 16 points, 3.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game and scored 32 points in the 2010 Regional Quarterfinals.

So far this season, Mitchell is averaging 21.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists for the undefeated and Jayhawk West Conference favorite Blue Dragons. A Preseason Second Team Junior College All-America choice, he has Hutchinson CC currently ranked No. 4 in the nation.

"Joe Mitchell is a winner, plain and simple," Groce added. "Joe brings a toughness and confidence about him to our basketball program. He has a knack for playing his best when his best is needed. Joe's ability to play well both with and without the ball makes him invaluable to our team. He and his family are excited to be Bobcats." [/OUTER_QUOTE]
