The open scholarship left from Joe Mitchell will go to Caris LaVert a 6'4 SG from Pickerington Central High.

ESPN Analysis:

Strengths:
Caris is an excellent shooter to 22 feet. He has greatly improved his off the dribble game but he's not quite a slasher. What he can do is create space to get his shot off.

Weaknesses:
Caris must add strength to his frame becuase he does struggle getting by people to get to the basket.

Bottom Line:
He has really improved over his junior season and should see a rise in his stock heading in to the spring/summer circuit. One of the biggest sleepers in Ohio's 2012 class. He's very similar to VCU sharpshooter Rob Brandenburg. People will know the name Caris Levert by the end of the summer.

Here are is ESPN ratings:
87 overall

59 POSITION
57 REGIONAL
8 STATE

I like the fact that Groce and Co. continue to mine Central Ohio for talent.

Reggie Rankin mentioned this on his twitter. "The Ohio Bobcats just landed 6'4 SG Caris LeVert (Pickerington Central (OH) LeVert can score the ball in a variety of ways including a nice stroke from behind the arc. Nice system fit for John Groce and Co. LeVert plays for former Buckeye and my very close friend Jerry Francis, so I know this kid is being coached with passion and will have toughness. That's how my Boy JF rolls !!"

If we were going to sign a shooting guard, I'll be honest, I was hoping for Geovonnie McKnight or Tamron Manning, but this looks like an excellent young player, too. If Belton is getting a scholarship, I believe we are full for next year, correct?

He's #22 in white in the video above. He does look quite skinny, but that crossover-pull up J is lightning quick.

Everything I've read about him so far sounds like Orlando Williams for Miami, the guy who hit the dagger 3 in the third overtime this year. The footage seems to show that LaVert is a better ball handler.

Arkley's twitter indicated that Belton is a non-scholarship player at this time (unsure what that means, exactly).

Belton is a senior walkon. I guess it depends if he gets another year from the NCAA and works his way into a scholarship role whether he can be counted against next year's scholarship totals. My guess is Levert is our only early signee, and if Belton pans out for 2012-13 then we don't sign anyone else late.

How appropriate!  "Vert" is French for "green."  Welcome aboard, Caris!

Have seen this kid the last 2 years. Nice high motor guy with a nose for the ball. I like his game. Surprised he went this high as I had him pegged early for a D2 or D3 all star type guy but he has shown steady improvement in the 4 or 5 times I saw him. He is coached by a former OU guy. Cant remember his name but we had a nice talk, 6'7 or so. I will have to look in my notes and get you guys his name.

. I am going to do a bit more research and see how he amped his game up over the last few months. I think the last time I saw him was vs Gahanna IIRC Pick won that one at home.

Hey,

There are two high schools in Picktown..you're thinking of North and they did defeat Gahanna at home.

Central was not as good and their coach is Jerry Francis a former OSU player last time I heard. his listed playing height is 6'5".

Perhaps you're thinking of Chad Gill the former bobcat who is also 6'5".

Dispatch had their high school boys basketball preview today. Not as extensive as past years, it does list the top teams and top players from each central Ohio conference. I was surprised that LeVert was not among the top players featured from the OCC. Looking forward to watching him play later this winter when his team visits the Jimmy Allen Gymnasium in Newark.
Maybe Joe Mac (Mr. High School Sports now that Larry Larson has moved to the west coast?) can shed some light on his omission.

there's a super jr. point guard at upper arlington named danny hummer.  best h.s. passing guard i've ever seen.  said to be a far better baseball player than hoops player, and he's pretty darn good at hoops.  also ignored by dispatch.  even though pickerington is in the OCC, it's located outside Franklin Co., and sometimes I wonder if that doesn't color Dispatch coverage.   Also, Jordan Potts from Northland may be the best pure p.g. in the city league, but was not mentioned among best players.  he would eventually start at most mac/horizon league schools.  surprised the best he could do was unc greensboro...

Make 'em pay, Caris.

I look forward to reading your impressions of Pick Central and our latest signee, B-Squared. It sounds like Caris had a great summer and I think our staff has done a very good job bringing in players who can succeed in our program.

I know that former OSU star Jerry Francis is building a very strong program at Pickerington Central. The Tigers are definitely on the rise -- they played 3 freshmen with the varsity last season -- and the community strongly supports athletics. I expect them to challenge for a district title and perhaps more.

Bruce -- Danny Hummer is just a sophomore. Your assessment on his passing skills is spot on. He is a very good drive and dish player, and,  shoots well from the perimeter. He is a lefty. Last season he was a JV starter and dressed with the varsity. He saw action in some varsity games. He is expected to join the starting lineup this year along with another sophomore, Kevin Vannatta.  I'm sure Danny will be a strong defender --  his coach, Tim Casey, is a very good teacher of the fundamentals and was national D-III player of the year for Larry Hunter at Wittenberg. I thought Danny had given up baseball to concentrate on hoops in the spring, but I may be mistaken. I know he was very good as a middle schooler and travel player. Danny's dad played hoops at Bishop Watterson back in the mid-70s and is now a municipal court judge here. His mom is city law director for UA.

joe, thanks for getting it right on danny hummer's class, i must be slipping in my old age.  i usually catch 2-3 arlington games a year and am really looking forward to seeing danny play varsity ball full time...as well as seeing a fully healed  molock at coffman.   i wish pickerington central would get over to this side of town, but  their schedule doesn't show any games over here.

Nice article of Central's win last night v. crosstown rival. LaVert with team high 21 points. Click NEXT above photo for nice pic of LaVert slam. Doc will undoubtedly like the first name of a 6-6 junior teammate's name.
