Given that it seems Kendall Crute may be going back home to play, it led me to wonder where does a coaching staff find players worthy of a scholly at this point in the summer?  Obviously the prior regime found Harley late in the summer, and he's supposed to be pretty good.  Still, it leads me to wonder what kind of player is out there at this point that Saul & Co. feel is worthy of a scholarship?

Or...what sort of walk on could be found at this point?

Not sure, but I have to admit I'm not real impressed with the players we have been offering for 2015. I hope Saul figures things out quickly.

If we're talking 2015, I think it's you who needs to figure things out. Saul knows what he wants and that's what he's going after. You should expect us to go after and get some people who, at first glance, don't blow you away.

We've had some success finding players at this time of year. Mychal Green and Jerome Tillman come to mind, with Khari Hartley waiting in the wings to join the apparently-late-but-right-on-time crew.

Having watched MAC recruiting in general--Bobcat recruiting in particular--for more than 40 years, a big factor in finding players is getting in early on underlying talent, trusting your eyes and your judgment in projecting the upside potential against the downside risk. This is what mid majors generally have to do. For example, I don't believe Caris LaVert even was rated when he committed to Ohio. I remember reading where he was considered by some a Division II prospect. We saw how that turned out, eh? MVP of the Ohio State playoff following his senior season. Geno Ford committed to Ohio before his junior season at Cambridge. He went on to become Ohio Player of the Year. Dave Jamerson averaged between 15-18 points his junior season at Stow, then exploded for 33.5 per as a senior. Everyone tried to get in on him as a senior. Too late. Dave honored his commitment to us. Conversely, Jason Kent was a top 100 recruit in the same class that produced Gary Trent. My point is we just have to believe that Saul Phillips and his staff can identify talent on-the-rise, and get their John Hancock's on the national letter of intent.

Our coaching staff has a proven track record of knowing how to recruit successfully at the mid major level.  They have a solid philosophy in place and I trust them to bring in the right players for our program.  As we've noted before, he won't indulge much in quick fixes, so we may have to be patient until he gets his program in place.

Word is the coaching staff has identified a few players available at this late date who they see as possible candidates to replace Kendall.  So I wouldn't rule out a possible very late signing for this coming season.    They got a player like that at North Dakota State, who only had Div. II offers, and he ended up being the Summit MVP this past year and roomed with Nick Kellogg at Portsmouth.

Looking at only the offer sheets on 2015 recruits, they do seem underwhelming compared to the offers that guys both Christian and Groce were going after had. As I have looked closer, there are some very good programs sprinkled in. Lots of MVC programs which is always a nice sign IMO.

I'm all good with going after under-the-radar guys but like Borna has often said if you swing for the fences eventually you will hit one out of the park. I think SP will start doing that more and more as he gets comfortable. Isaiah Maurice who we just offered last week has some big-time offers. If SP can consistently sign elite players who all the big-guys somehow miss, more power to him.

While depth is a big concern this year (especially after watching the bodies hit the floor last year) my bigger concern is the following year. When NDOUR, Taylor and Bean are all gone we are going to have some big minutes to fill. Even if Wadly takes a huge jump, we still are going to need one of these 2015 guys to come in and make an impact in the post immediately to help Campbell. Are there any unsigned 6-10+ centers available from the Netherlands?

Given that only 33 of the top 100 have committed I have to think that there are another couple hundred of guys to look at . Think about guys like Devaughn and Jimmer Freddette were ranked in the 900's on the top 1000 in their class and you still have a lot of homework to do.

Anyone who is watching the Adidas Super 64 right now on ESPN gets to see a loty of uncommitted talent. out there right now....of course INdiana Elite is in the Championship game....

The more I have dug around on google, twitter and youtube, the more I have become a big fan of the Admiral Schofield and Obediah Church. Those two could be a great combo at OHIO.

I don't want to hype them too much because I think other schools are going to pile in... However, with Saul Phillips, I am a true believer that OUr classic "all we need to do is get them on campus" has never been more true. We can go up against anyone.

I think OU Country was referring to the class of 2014, not 2015...how do you find kids this late who would be worthy of signing and would be eligible this season?

This is accurate Jeff.  I was just curious, in light of Kendall Crute's situtation, how a coaching staff finds a guy like Harley this late in the game.  Sounds like we've had a couple such guys in years past - before I paid much attention to recruiting.

I love this thread.  And, I'll go back to my recruiting philosophy.  I'm with Borna, we MUST go after 1-2 legit big time players a year to move the program forward.  We all love developing players but the odds of hitting on enough of them and getting them to a more elite level is difficult.  Most have limitations or they would be ranked higher.  I still feel that if OHIO could just get 1-2 Top 250 player or so per year they would be fine.  I know...easier said than done!

I am sorry I read JSF and Opti and answered on the 2015 as that is in full swing right now....

2014 is picked over but you can go here and jump to page 22 and work your way forward if you want to see what is out there. There are a few uncommitted 14's playing in select tourneys that allow them to jump in the July open eval period.

We are still shaking trees.....just looking at profiles

Here's another one.
three-star power forward Ray Kasongo has been denied admission by University of Oregon.

He is going power conference very quickly, not a mid-major talent.  He already has big visits lined up.

According to a few news stories, he is currently a non-qualifier.  Not sure if that is true or Auburn spin, because they were one over the scholarship limit and somebody needed to go.  Stay classy Bruce Pearl!

Unfortunately he is La Lumiere which is not an IHSAA school (but is the alma mater of a current supreme court justice) that we do not get to see much. I am pretty sure I never got to see him play so I am not much help here.

EDIT ....watched the youtube ....I did see him play...Lawrence North. Been a couple years though so still not much help. Did not stand out in the HS game vs Marion that I watched.

I would like to know the big visits he has lined up. This late in game SP needs to at least pick up the phone. A get like Kasongo could be a huge solution to depth problems this season and a corner stone for the future. Anybody know the distance Athens is from this guy's hometown? We have done fairly well with Kentucky products recently.
