At tonight's Caravan stop in Dayton, Saul Phillips announced that Grambling's Chandler Thomas will transfer to Ohio. He has graduated from Grambling and will attend grad school at Ohio yet will have two years of eligibility remaining (usually most of these graduate transfers only have one year left).. Phillips said he won't take a lot of transfers but some here and there to fill holes. Said Thomas is a high-character guy. Phillips told him he would back up Ndour this season and that they would potentially recruit someone ahead of him the following year. Thomas told Phillips he just wanted to be a part of the Ohio program.

At Grambling last season, he played in 29 games averaging 22.8 minutes per contest. He averaged 8 points per game and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 45% from the field, 37% on threes and 59% at the FT line.

This fills a hole on a dangerously thin roster.

Interesting, did not realize grad school transfer could play 2 years. I love that we have another guy on our roster... With all the injuries last year, even having bodies for practice was a problem.

Grambling's profile of him has some personal interview type questions.

Yes, i know he is a transfer, but love the idea of reaching into Indiana high school hoops for a player.

He played his freshman year at UMBC, transferred after one season and sat out 2012-2013, and played a year at Grambling. Did he graduate a year early?

Welcome to the Ohio program, Chandler Thomas!

Thomas has been an honor roll student forever. Earning his bachelor's in Business Management in three years. Plans to take a Master's in business at Ohio.

Led Grambling in rebounding at nearly 6 per game.

Grambling coach spoke well of his character and how he had a good year there as a sophomore, and that he was a positive leader.

I would say this is better than a JUCO signing, because Thomas has proven himself to be able to contribute at the Div. I level.

The losses of Wigginton and Morillo seem less significant with the class Coach has assembled.

That's high-character all right. I'm impressed.

He didn't start at Grambling, so wouldn't expect him to be a major producer here.  But a solid, experienced player with a mature head on his shoulders can bring a great benefit to this team.  Welcome to Oho Chandler.

Character is high on my list of success traits.  So, very solid news here.

My thought about the anti-Calipari track of recruiting 5th year guys...

(I know it's not Saul's main thrust.  But it's still an interesting concept.)

I see him as a Travis Wilkins type addition- 22yr old with maturity and good perspective of his role on the team. Expectation were low and narrow for Wilkins- spot up shooter that will give Kellogg a few minutes rest. And he lived up to expectations his first year but far exceeded them his second. We just need Thomas to give NDour a few minutes rest each game, if he gives us anything more than that it will be another pleasant surprise.

We'll still have 4 scholarships to give for the 2015 class and this will Setty a classmate. Good pickup.

I'm guessing with this addition that it will give Treg a little more room to roam free with his hustle and athleticism. Also gives the bench another body in case Mo or Tony get in foul trouble. Really interested to see how the wings shake out. Hopefully Bean, Stevie and the front court guys can help soften the load and pull these guys along slowly.

I really like the addition of Chandler.  Seems like a kid that is certainly capable of scoring and rebounding off the bench or as a starter.  He also seems like a good solid citizen too.  A much needed addition to the depth of the squad.  I like how OUr team shapes up for next year with this addition to complete the roster.  (I liked it before, but this puts the depth concern at ease.)

Just a note:  the questions/answers on that link have the heading of Chandler Thomas, but the actual interview is with Chase Cormier.  The Grambling website is something of a trainwreck...rife with errors.

Thomas average 6.0 ppg and 3.4 rpg in 17.4 minutes his freshman year at UMBC. Shot 46.4 percent from the field and 65.5 percent at the foul line. 3 of 6 on 3s.

Makes sense, but I was really looking forward to "Treg Setty Day" in March 2016.

Chandler is a great kid. Played on Speice IndyHeat with Marquis Teague, Yogi Ferrell, Ethan and a few others of signifcance. Wiry strong with good instincts around the bucket. Finishes well in traffic and has nice touch in the mid range. He and Marquis were childhood buds and families were very close. I think he started at Indy Pike nad then transferred to Cathedral.... Glad to see him land at Ohio. I had talked to JG and Dustin about him many moons back. Pops will  be pleased once he sets foot on campus. Nice Family.

Another interesting tidbit, if Phillips plans to make Thomas the main backup for Ndour then that must mean he plans on playing Setty at the 3 right?

Sounds like a proven commodity that should contribute. This late in the game I like signing a guy like Thomas over taking a flyer on an unsigned JUCO or high school senior.

I am really getting pumped about seeing this team come December.

sorry, hard to get excited about someone who continually transfers (2 high schools, 3 colleges now) and comes from perhaps one of the 5 worst D-1 programs...seems to me he'll add practice depth and little else.  5 serviceable minutes a game would be a pleasant surprise.

I kind of thought the same thing, but 2 things to consider: one is that he graduated in. 3 years and two-he didn't get his stats against Grambling.

From a pretty decent source running at Open Gym that would be a fairly accurate assessment.
