I think the real backlash here should be directed towards the coaching staff. Why offer a kid like this?

Can't wait for the backlash on this one since he was originally a hometown kid.

Every kid who grows up in Athens should go to Ohio. No matter what. They are not allowed outside the confines of the city, ever. Fence them in!
Well, I'm sure you're referring to me here... but the truth is he didn't go to ohio state or another MAC School, so frankly I couldn't give two sh***.

On the other hand, since he's no longer an OHIO recruit, he's no longer relevant on this board, so... nothing to see here. move along.
Not you specifically DFC. More towards the folks who think we don't recruit locally enough. Which is laughable. But I agree with you.

OK - "Scoolth" thread title aside. Tell me the MAC school/coaching staff who is doing a BETTER job of recruiting AND/OR SIGNING better "local" talent than we have................

I don't know of one, that's the point. I like to think that any Columbus talent Ohio gets is considered "local" and Ohio is pretty darn good at getting it.

This goes back to an argument that was had on this board regarding players like Kretzer and Hitchins ending up at Akron instead of Ohio. Some on the board argued that Ohio wasn't recruiting well locally. How often do guys really come out of SE Ohio anyway?

Well - My kid who is a HS Senior next year as example. He has a lot of family and "roots" connection to Athens & OHIO, has more OHIO gear I have bought him over the years than prolly any actual student or athlete at OHIO. He has been to A LOT of OHIO FB and BB games (in the best seats), yet he is getting wishy/washy on OHIO as his top choice. The coaches and how good or diligent they are at recruiting "local" talent is not the only factor here. A lot of kids just want to get away from "home" when they go to college. Major and degree field of study decisions outside of sports also an influence on those decisions.

I disappointed the "home/local team" when I made my decision. My parents were tO$U alums. They were t'eed off when I changed my mind from acceptance to tO$U then decided to apply and go to OHIO instead at the last minute......

Agreed, probably would have been at Rio Grande had he stayed in Athens.

Not everything is a binary choice Billy. I simply stated he was well served by his transfer - he very well MAY have ended on the exact same path (though that would be unusual wouldn’t it) or, gasp, a better one had he stayed in Athens beyond the few years he lived there. or yes, to your point, he may have ended up at Rio Grande (though I doubt it). All we know is that he made a choice to leave Athens (upsetting some folks at the time) and he ended up in a good place. Just stating a fact. He transferred and it worked out well for him.

Hey, whenever you have a chance to call someone out on a 4.5 year old post, even though they haven't posted in like 9 months and might never see it, you have to do it.

Yep, them Athens and SEO kids just can't compete on the big stage. No need for any Big Time programs to recruit this area at all. Just a barren wasteland.

They've had reason to come down one time in the last two decades to watch Dante Jackson.

Important update so I don't send SE Ohio basketball fans into a fit. I remembered another big time recruit, Cam Thoroughman. Unfortunately, it's getting hard to find any big timers in the 1990s and 1980s. Was the last big timer before those two 1982 grad Paul Newman from Wheelersburg? He played one uneventful year at Marquette.

If you wanna expand the boundaries a bit and hit the wayback button...

Noah Moore, Parkersburg in the late '70s. Played 4 years at WVU for Gale Catlett.
Allan Hornyak, the "Bellaire Bomber," starred for Ohio State in the early 70s.
And of course, there was the kid from Lancaster whose name escapes me, who was all set to come to Ohio, then followed Danny Nee to Nebraska.
