Still thinks he knows more than many people here,and has to defend his opinion by justifying how solid of a program Illinois State is in one recruit. You can skew facts from recruiting sites just like those who choose to support the current players and coaches do.

Despite what you believe, the echo chamber, and "everything is good" isn't what we all think. Rather, many of us choose to actually support the program and Ohio rather then denigrate every other or every third recruit the staff brings in when they don't have enough offers, or aren't transferring from a P5/P6 school.

I have a few frustrations about this staff, but none have to do with recruiting. As an alumnus, I'm good with the idea that no one under Saul has ended up in jail or in the law enforcement section of the paper. (unless I'm mistaken?) Can't say that about the two preceding coaching staff's teams.

Because, really, what good do we, as fans, in this board, get out of tearing down OUr coaching staff for recruiting a player none of us (in most cases) have ever seen before, short of a highlight video?

I anxiously await your insult calling me "Mrs Phillips", or something else tomorrow. ✌️
I wonder what he thought about Jordan Dartis' only other offer being from Kennesaw St when he signed with us?

Ask yourself if Ohio today is ready to knock off Buffalo today? UB coach is a program builder and you can't ignore the caliber of recruits he is bringing in year in and year out.

Let me preface this with, I'm neither knocking this recruiting class, nor any individual student-athlete we're bringing in, but does anyone but me find it odd to see the locations of the guys we're bringing in?

Seems like the staff (for better or worse) is recruiting far and wide across the fruited plain to try and bring talent to Athens. Don't know if that's just because they like these guys better/have better ties to local coaches and AAU orgs in these areas(seems unlikely)/are finding it difficult to recruit in the friendly confines of the Buckeye state (hope that's not true).

Unless I'm mistaken our roster breakdown by year/location is -

Sr: Block (Illinois), Dartis (Ohio), Taylor (Ohio)
Jr: Gollon (Wisconsin), Cowart (Mississippi)
So: Carter (Ohio), Kirk (Illinois), Murrell (Iowa)
Fr: Vander Plas (Wisconsin), Springs (N Carolina), McMurray (Ohio), Preston (Tennessee), James (N Carolina)

Departed: Laster (Michigan), Mickle (NY/Florida), Butler (S Carolina), Dozier (Maryland), Gareri (Ohio)

By my count that's 18 student athletes associated with this program the last 2 years, of which only 5 hail from Ohio. Really recruiting the midwest (IL/WI/IA) hard - which makes sense given Saul and his staff's background, but what has me scratching my head is the SE USA bent we're seeing lately (NC/SC/TN/FL/MS).

Again, not complaining. Just an observation.

Preston is really from the Orlando FL area (?) - just made a stop in TN.

There were better players from TN that were either
A)Not recruited by Saul
B)Not offered by Saul -or-
C)Decided to go elsewhere if they indeed were offered.

There was a 6-4 guard that was named mid-state MVP from a team that went 32-1 and had an offer from Arkansas State... still available. Maybe Ohio approached him, I don't know. But he can play either guard spot. Ranked the #256 h.s. player in America.

When we start losing recruits consistently to D2 schools...then I'll start worrying about the recruiting philosophy of this staff. But we seem to be consistently holding off Longwood for recruits, so we've got that going for us. Meanwhile.....in Buffalo.......

One thing that Longwood has in common with VMI and USC-Upstate and Kennesaw is that they were all exceedingly crappy last season.

Longwood was 7-26. The other 3 were almost as bad. It seems like you really have to make progress in the EARLY signing period or the pickings will be slim.

Oh yea, man. I agree. Every MAC school should relieve their coaches of their positions because they can't beat Buffalo right now. All of them.

Every situation is different, but Johnson is from Birmingham and right now he is only looking at Conference USA schools (including UAB). Not everyone wants to come to Athens, Ohio.

Thread drift but I can't help but notice all 3 of those programs are in CUSA. Would CUSA be more marketable for our basketball program? Easier to attract non-conference big name opponents playing out of CUSA? Travel I know is bad but the upside may be higher.

Short answer - no.

Long answer - hell no.

For every extra Jamal Johnson type recruit we "might" get and for every extra non-con road game against a P5 we might get (they still wouldn't come to Athens) we'd have exponential cost increases every season for road conference games.

It would be massive risk with minimal (albeit some) reward.


Also - when is MTSU just going to hire you to be their recruiting manager greencat? You love them and the CUSA so much. Plus, all it requires is looking at recruit rankings on scout.com and Verbal Commits plus watching some YouTube highlights. Get on it man!

I would say if we played more Tuesday’s and Friday night games on TV that our exposure would increase, as we would get more national mentions which is a million dollar investment

I tend to agree. It would need to be a situation where Ohio where it was a level up basketball conference. 3 to 4 NCAA qualifiers a year like the A10 or AAC to justify the travel.

Let's be honest, many on here at this time last year were saying how awesome Butler was going to be vs. how crappy Kirk must be because he went to Drake and that was it. Who knows, this group could be a game changer. I certainly know that we are better than we were last year and we shocked some people. I would say that even if Dartis doesn't play, we have Gollon, Block, Cowart, Murrell and James all able to step in. Not as great as Dartis but last year he was a shell of himself anyways.

Who the hell said Kirk was crappy because he committed to Drake? Teyvion Kirk had like 20 offers from programs peer to Ohio.

And how do you think we are just fine without Dartis, a player who has a good shot at breaking Nick Kellogg's conference three point record? Gollon (improved over the year, but hasn't proven to be more than a role player) Block (role player, and got passed by Gollon) Cowart (good pickup, as long he's not too ball dominant as his JUCO stats would indicate) Murrell (could be good, but coming off injury) James (true freshman). I'm no FearLeon, but sometimes you sound like you think we'll be MAC champs just because we have warm bodies on our roster.

Western Kentucky, two Miami wins in the regular season, great games in the Diamondhead. Those were all shockers in my book considering our MASH unit.
