For the last few days, I had been saying prayers for Coach and his family, which I will continue to do. While travelling earlier today I got the bad news and it all seemed so immensely sad. He had just barely begun to enjoy retirement. It wasn't the only sad episode. I remember his chance at getting in the Power Conference world with the then Big 8. He stayed local and loyal to his team and conference and it wasn't rewarded.

I will try and concentrate on the happy times in Athens. For me personally, I will remember him in the late 80s barnstorming across the state recruiting for Wittenberg and attending high school games on Friday night, when I was a JV coach and varsity assistant. The pleasantness and earnestness in his questions about certain high school players and their pluses and minuses will be something I will never forget.

It might be a good time to ponder about our own mortality; and if we are in stressful jobs, we might want to reflect on retiring before it is too late.

I had posted in the other thread about asking anyone who knew the family to private message me. I had reached out to the Athens School superintendent about possibly doing something since Coach Hunter was a graduate of Athens High School (he is in the school's hall of fame). I do not know how to contact the family and at this very rough time it may be too soon to propose this, but I do want to throw out the idea that there could be a scholarship endowed at the high school in Coach's name. There is a program at the high school and several other scholarships are in place there. I sure there are other ideas some have and I think many of us would contribute in some way to show our appreciation for the many memories he brought to us over the years.

One of the great things about my years calling Wittenberg basketball on radio was getting to know Coach Hunter. He had moved
to Athens by the time I got to Springfield, but he would call me at least once a season to say he had listened to a game while out recruiting, or simply to talk basketball and see how the Tigers were doing. He was a class guy at all times, and it was an honor to know him....RIP Coach
