And the rumors are now confirmed on both fronts. Dozier and Butler both gone. Sad to see them go - but this is exactly why I brought up some guys in the recruiting forum back a month or so ago. We need to grab a couple guys in the late signing period now.

A transfer who is immediately eligible makes sense to balance classes, but I'd like to see an impact freshman added as well (can SP pull Kirk V2.0 out of his hat?)

Felt like Zach was really coming into his own late in the season and would have been a major contributor next year. And he fit the system: a good distributor who could drive when needed.

Hope he finds a good landing spot.

Can really go in a lot of different directions now. But with Gavin and Jordy gone after next year, I think you definitely need to get some kind of impact in the backcourt.

Just looking at the recruiting pages; Hill, Guess and McConnell are the only ones (that we know of) who are still available backcourt players. Most of the backcourt guys being recruited are 2019s. Gonna be an interesting spring to see which rabbit we can pull out of the proverbial hat.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to bring in a player in the ilk of a Kevin Mickle or a Mike Laster? Athlete, athlete, athlete. Someone strong who can drive the lane. We also need a point guard to back up Kirk and learn from him. Yahel Hill looks good, wonder why he hasn't signed anywhere yet? Guess looks good too but I think that for this team with Block, DT and Dartis as seniors we have to win next year for Saul. That means bringing in at least 1 of 2 new signees who can have an INSTANT impact.

That means we can't wait for a Butler or a Culver or a Gareri to develop. We return a core of Dartis, Taylor, Kirk, Block, Carter and Gollon which is as good as anyone's in the MAC this side of Buffalo and Ball state. But we have unknowns with everyone else. Now, if Saul knows that BVP, Springs, Murrell, Gareri or McMurray can produce some instant rotation players then I'm all for some freshmen but, if not, we need to add some vets.

So I guess the speculation in the chat room wasn't in error after all. We need a backup point guard desperately.

Sigh. I'm glad I'm not a coach.

I should have asked the question directly to Saul by going to a Caravan or calling into the coaches show, but I've had this question for months and here it became relevant. In basketball, you can have multiple wings on the floor, multiple post players on the floor, but you're probably only going to have one point guard on the floor at any given time. If you recruit two from the same class, they may come in with close to equal ability, but eventually one will separate from the other, so how does a coach make sure the other doesn't regret his decision?

Butler could develop into a good player, but I honestly don't think he will surpass Kirk over the next three years. Honestly, you could see this coming months ago.

This did not surprise me at all. I was actually more surprised by the Dozier departure. Rumblings have been there for awhile now on Butler. Wish him the best.

The only argument I would have to this is I think the idea was eventually for them to be on the floor at the same time, which I think Saul alluded to in a post game presser. Playing off each other they would almost be interchangeable.

I thought Zach actually was more of a natural PG than TK, given TKs ability to get to the rim and his low assist, high turnover numbers. But TK was the better player for Ohio in the situation they had last season and had better handles.

Zach will be a good combo guard for someone.

Sad to see Zach leave. Looks like there is a problem retaining players. Wonder what the players are told when they are recruited. I can see there will be constant turnover running a program this way. Rotation stuck at 7-8 players. Guys won’t hang around until their junior year to get playing time. Good Luck Zach!

I wrote the piece below several weeks ago and wisely decided to stay out of needless debate. However, with 2 scholly's opening, I think this is a HUGE opportunity for SP. I say simply "opportunity" because this isn't easy; I have no clue but he doesn't seen particularly connected; and I'm sure its not easy trying to pluck a homerun transfer when 1,001 other guys are trying to do the same thing. Obviously if you're excited about the core coming back next year and you feel that with them healthy. prosperity is right around the corner, then Plan #1 below is your strategy. If however you feel that core, even healthy, still doesn't touch Buffalo (SP needs Oats to go) or JG once he loads up, then Plan #2 is your BHAG and you try as you might to take a big swing, even if philosophy it isn't your style (but your trying to simply get a couple more years of that half million dollar salary). Don't swing back and I'm sorry I minimized this post and didn't delete it--but I honestly believe these opening give SP a punchers chance for next year if Oats doesn't leave.----

I’m answering this question with the assumption that the CEO of this organization is riding with Saul moving forward and most likely not just next year, but 1-2 years after that. Assuming that’s true, you either:
1) Trust the process. Get guys healthy. Bring in the redshirts. Bring in your recruits. Assume this past year+ was a hiccup(s) and carry out the grand plan to prosperity. CEO really has to disregard past data, see the vision and want to double down financially believing that success is right around the corner heading down the path we’ve been on.
Or,
2) Keep the coach, change the strategy. Even though it’s not your preference or philosophy, try to get a couple high end transfers or JUCO’s to keep your head above water the next 1-2 years. Then require a change on the coaching staff (recruiting coordinator), or recruiting philosophystrategy, to bring in a different caliber of athlete. You take this route if you like the coach, but realize he needs to reinvent himself to prosper. That the current plan may get you in the top four, but not much higher. Often times in the pro ranks when the coach is required to change coordinators/schemes to keep their jobs, they refuse and leave/are fired out of loyalty to their staff or commitment to their philosophy . If we do have a couple scholarships come open, try as you might to find some short term answers until either guys can be developed, or higher end options can be recruited.
If an extensions been granted, not really sure there is a different strategy moving forward other than these two choices, is there? And my hunch is that option #2 is such a long shot and that “Trusting the Process” is the only realistic avenue we have right now.

I don't think it's really a problem. Think about the timeline. When Butler was recruited he was the backup to Simmons for one year, then he would get to take over. Once Simmons left Kirk was brought in and obviously Kirk won the starting PG job. Butler could have developed into a good player, but he wasn't going to overtake Kirk as starting PG.

If a backup QB transfers from a football program no one says there's an issue retaining players. It's just part of the game.

I will say this: the difference between football and basketball is that you traditionally carry 3-5 QB's so that effect is traditionally negated. In basketball, if your backup leaves you're in deep crap.

The difference in basketball and football transfers is that about 40% of hoops guys depart for so called greener pastures. The Bobcats along with many other schools have lost their share of players to transfers. I think AAU in basketball has a great deal to do with why these players leave for so many schools. Many of these hoops stars play for not one but two or three high schools in their careers.

I don’t get this transfer, he has a chance to start if he worked on his jump shot. Yager Hill would be a great get along with Christian Guess. Go Cats

And I wouldn't say that Ohio has a problem retaining players more than any other school. It's become the norm for every school to have a couple guys transfer every year.

A ton of folks on this board got hammered for saying all year he was leaving after this season and look what happened. As for #0...classic case of things not going his way on the court and taking his ball and going home. It's the college basketball millennial way. How many transfers in the Saul era now?

There are 85 football scholarships vs 13. One or two backup pg’s vs 3 or 4 backup qb’s.

We've always had players who have transferred down to a lower conference without the playing time but the concerning thing is watching a guy like Simmons transfer to the P5. I can think of of one guy in football in the 90's who as a lineman transferred from Ohio to Michigan. Guy was a beast and ended up 1st team Big Ten. But generally we haven't had to deal with that sort of threat before as a choice mid major program that has thrived with P5 transfers in over the years. In this case at least doesn't sound like Butler is heading to a higher level conference.

Saul is responsible for all of college basketball now? Transfers are up nation-wide. I'd love to hear how that is Saul's fault.

Also the first part of your statement is also false. It was widely talked about in the chat room late in the year that he might be leaving and that he wasn't happy. I think you just made up the part where people got hammered for saying that. Or you turned 1 person questioning someone's source as "a ton of folks got hammered".

I understand that you want us to fire Saul. It's fine to think that, but you're not really living in reality with these posts.

Yeah Godwin’s brother was a coach at Michigan, so he left to be with his brother. He played in the nfl until he was like 35 or 36.

All I know is I see this as a big opportunity to get a couple kids, whether it's via transfer or recruiting. I do know a couple kids in Ohio are on the board and are available. Whether Ohio goes after them or not remains to be seen, but I like having scholarships open this time of year because of the chaos that happens.

That said, I don't think McConnell comes here, especially since Wichita State had a scholly open recently and they've been rumored to be the lead dog for him. We'll see what happens but it's time to find a couple good kids and help fill out the 2018-2019 Ohio Bobcats roster.
