Way to go Cats. So much for FS forcing people to major in specialized studies.

Been meaning to ask this for a while.

Allen's last post provided the perfect segue.

Looking at the time of his post,as well as posts from other people,
doesn't anyone on here sleep ?
Ha....high achieving people strike when the urges hit. Already been up and had 2 meetings at the hospital. Sign in prior to heading back to the office.
Got to agree with Tom on this one although early isn't necessary the only time to strike. I remember many late nights at journalism conferences hanging out after the very last evening session in the hope of finding one more prospect.

Laying here in the hospital since Monday after having both knees replaced the staff can't get it figured out that some of us go to bed at midnight to one and wake up at 6. When I'm 93 in 2050 they'll still be telling us less than 8 hours will shorten your life significantly

Guess the amount of sleep you need depends on the person.

If I get less then 7-8 hours I feel tired all the next day.

Funny thing,no matter what time I go to bed,I'm awake at 5:30.

I have a few thoughts, even though I'm coming at this late.

1. I have hired folks with a BSS degree. I also interviewed one woman who played basketball at a very good program and had a BSS degree. She explained that the BSS degree allowed her to take the classes she wanted and have more flexibility with her class schedule. She was very smart and I would have hired her except that someone else beat me to the punch.

2. I'm not saying that no athletes choose BSS so they can have it easy. I'm sure some do. But I think many are doing it for the same reason she did. They can create a schedule that works for them. They aren't taking easier classes but they may be subbing a couple classes in the regular major for a similar class that fits their schedule better. I think that's a pretty smart strategy.

3. There seems to be a belief here that online classes at OU are provided by some third party. Things may have changed but when I was at OU the online classes were taught by OU Professors and had the same requirements as the in-person classes. They were not easier. If anything they were more difficult because you had to be more self-motivated.

1.It would be interesting to know, what type of position the people with the BSS degree you interviewed were applying for.

2.The question comes down to,what do you want to use the BSS for.

If you're looking into grad, medical or law school you have to make sure you take all the required core/prerequisite classes.
Same thing,if you want to pursue a professional license like Professional Engineer.
In most states,it doesn't matter what classes you take,to qualify for the professional engineering exam, you must have an engineering or engineering technology degree.

I know when I was at O.U. I was thinking about going for a B.S. in General Studies.
At that time I was looking into vet. school and it seemed the best way to combine my engineering and pre vet. classes.
My adviser said don't.He said major in one, minor in the other.

3.What you said about online courses offered by O.U. may be 100% correct.
But,as far as I know, you're not required to take your online classes from O.U.
As has been posted before, there are a number of places that offer college level classes with less then rigorous academic requirements.

As a trumpster, I prefer the inquirer, drudge or info wars, they scare me into believing them, so I would say it reduces his cred. The Atlantic doesn’t talk about the missing 5 articles of the constitution. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/ampht... /

Admitting to preferring the drudge report, or info wards certainly doesn't improve your credibility.

Yes, he did. He has been out to gouge me for a while. I think we disagreed on something minor, so he follows all of my post. OU Country is alright with me though.

I'm not out to gouge, and I don't follow all of your posts. We both post a lot, and don't always agree, that's all. (likely too much on my end)

Most importantly, I did miss the sarcasm, and I'm glad it's sarcasm missed.

Last week the National Wrestling Coaches Association came out with their All- Academic teams and individuals.

Their methodology is somewhat suspect, given the fact that Kent State came out number 2 in the nation.

What was interesting was the majors of individual wrestlers.

The majors of wrestlers from schools like Harvard,Stanford,Lehigh, etc., were pretty much as you'd expect, Engineering,Economics,Business or similar fields.

Schools like OSU,Iowa and other wrestling havens had somewhat less rigorous majors like Sports and Recreation Management,Sport Industry,Coaching Science,Positive Coaching(MEd),and Athletic Leadership(MA).

Since "titles" can be misleading,I looked up some of the curricula.
Not exactly academically rigorous.

These majors were a bit surprising, given that fact that, unlike football and basketball, there is no pro career after college.

Guess some guys just want make sure they get in their 4 years of wrestling and trying for a National Championship.

Or maybe they truly are interested in those fields. It should come as no surprise that athletes might want to make sports-related careers their life work since that's been their world for so long.

I don't disagree the some athletes may want to go into a sports related field.

That's why,as I said in my original post,I checked out the curricula for most of the undergraduate programs.

As I said, they are not exactly academically rigorous. They seem to follow the majoring in eligibility model.

Further thread drift suggestion...What is the "NCAA"? And why does it matter?

"Specialized Studies" grads/degree earners might have the best answers. As well as much higher than vs general population "no degrees" earners successes in life, and value added contributions to their respective families and communities....
