To restore excitement to fans, it can't be the assistant head coach at someplace most have never heard of, and it can't be someone that feels like a retread scenario (JC?). Dane Fife, Andy Kennedy - names that people who follow hoops have heard of, in my opinion, would make a difference.

I'd be surprised if many fans know who Andy Kennedy is. You really have to be a pretty big college hoops fan to know him.
He spent one interim year at UC and then coached in relative obscurity at Ole Miss where most of OUr fanbase would lose a bet if you asked where he previously coached.
I don't think he's a bad choice at all ... but I think it contradicts your reasoning above. He's not really a known commodity ... but with some marketing/publicizing I could definitely see people potentially getting on board.
