Yes, Akron is in dire straits institutionally and its big athletics budget has to be in the crosshairs on some level. They just offered buyouts to 47% of their professors. Of course, only a fraction will accept them, but they are getting clobbered by an enrollment decline that's driven by demographics and significant improvements at Kent State and Cleveland State.

The enrollment decline is also due to their own ineptitude in managing the university and its profile within NE Ohio. Pure death spiral at this stage.

I don't think its really a question that the sports that play in The Convo can play at the conference championship level. When I see Volleyball or Women's Basketball hit their head up against the Top 20 I get frustrated. The ultimate goal should be to have the type of facilities to get Ohio teams into the Top 10. Everything the last 25 years is about loading up Peden with facilities when most of the sports play in or around the Convo. Weight room for example is kind of far to walk to in the far corner of Peden.
Peden also just got equipped with all new Rogue equipment. It's remarkable that OU spent that much money for an upgrade. Specialty bars and custom OU barbells/dumbbells. That place is sweet. Any college athlete is lucky to train there and would be hard pressed to find another school with the same level of equipment outside the P5.
Well one wouldn't have to travel too far. Miami has an unbelievable two story facility. I know Toledo has recently built a brand new room and I would think BG had some sort of upgrade when the Stroh Center went up.

The upgrade to Peden's room is fantastic though, just should've been upgraded 10 years ago

To the original poster or anyone else who knows, what is a “nutrition center” ? I assume we already have special meal programs for athletes.

And NO part of that buyout added years to their retirement account. So it really only applies to those that already have 30 years in the system. Or those that are looking for another job.

Just a thought. Any reason that a temp. basketball courts or volleyball court not be put in Walter Fieldhouse??

With proper foresight (not something our university tends to excel in), a basketball practice facility could have been added to the fieldhouse for the fraction of a cost of a standalone. Missed opportunity IMO.

With proper foresight (not something our university tends to excel in), a basketball practice facility could have been added to the fieldhouse for the fraction of a cost of a standalone. Missed opportunity IMO.
Based on projects I've worked on,the cost of including a BB practice facility as part of the IPF would not have been much different then a standalone.

There would be some savings,in both time and cost,based on a larger single project.
But the per square foot construction cost would be about the same.

Also,the IPF and a BB practice facility couldn't share mechanical systems,like HVAC.

You'd also want some type of "separation" between the two facilities,so they can function independently.
That's just like building a "standalone".

A dedicated space for receiving nutritious meals (meals for performance athletes) with a full time dietitian. The space should be large enough for team sports to have their meals there together.

Unfortunately our athletes have the same meal plans as the general student body, this is something that many schools offer but not in our budget. Hell, if you aren't on a full ride you have to pay for your own meal plan. Many of our athletes are living on fast food, sad reality.

To add to this, I would have to assume that would be a major recruiting topic... being able to tell parents that their kids will be well provided for when it comes to healthy and nutritious food and a plan catered to their specific body type/needs.

Good insight. I'd still argue that it would have been easier to fundraise for both at the same time and get your practice facility situation improved. Also, I'm not sure where a basketball facility could even be built. The area by Walter is about the only open space, but that would involve removing the grass football practice field (which is rarely ever used).

I agree fundraising should have been easier for an IPF/BB Practice Facility project.

As far as location,as have been suggested before:

1.Next to Ping,where the new ice arena was going to be built

2.Punch Card Park

3.The Parking area at the West end of the Convo.

If the ice arena project ever gets resurrected,convert Bird Arena.

If a facility were to be constructed, which it won't - at least in the next 5 to 8 years - it needs to be adjacent to the Convo so players can go directly from existing locker room and training facilities to the court. But the need to add it to the Convo means added cost related to flood plain, etc.

No question,trying to build in a flood plain will not only add costs,but complicate the design and building process.


It would probably be more cost effective to put the practice facility in a "better" (non flood zone) location, and include locker and training rooms in the design.

The more I think about it,Punch Card Park would be an ideal location.

Hmmm. Do I want to play in the Convo or the MAC Center? Our facilities "deficit" in this case is a bit overblown.
