Going back to typing like an adult again...Maybe it's me, but I'd be surprised if Coach Boals would come here for anything short of $450-550k that the job has paid in the last 5-7 years. Maybe I'm wrong. Working off the assumption that we're highly likely to cut whatever the coaches salary will be, I think Boals might be more than Ohio will choose to afford. Again, maybe I'm wrong.

I'd also assume that he's a guy who left Ohio State for a head coaching gig that might actually pay him LESS than he made with Thad as Associate Head Coach. I'm sure that info is out there somewhere - I haven't looked it up.

If I'm a betting man, I'm betting Coach Boals aspires to get to a P5 level job. If he does, is Ohio a better job for him, right now, than Stony Brook? 5-6 years ago, this wasn't even a debate, because it was. But, Stony Brook has done some renovations in recent years to facilities that might have changed that. They're also in a conference I'd argue that is easier to win in, and in an area that may be easier to recruit from. Again, I don't know. There's some assumption in this space that thinks he would come here just because it's his Alma Mater. Not everyone does that. I'm not sure I'd do that in his case If I were him, solely because it's his Alma mater.

Whenever Saul leaves, and that he will seems to be a forgone conclusion, the next hire is one that Schaus & Ohio absolutely can't screw up. Because they've screwed up the current situation since JG's departure in a few ways - I think that's agreed upon here. The next hire had better be able to convince the best players we currently have to stay, or it's gonna be a long, long couple years of rebuilding for the new coach. The next hires had better be able to help sell the public on coming to games, and then deliver on that sales job. And the question is, is Boals that guy to do that? Because he's an alumnus from a great team in a good era of Ohio hoops, I'd say he'd help sell the program to some of the older crowd. Short of being 5-1 this year at Stony Brook, I have no clue what kind of coach he is. Something important for my money, with a new hire, is having a brand of basketball that can be sold to younger fans/alumni/students. One that is fun to watch, because some blend of fun to watch and winning is what puts butts in the seats, right?

Lastly, to come back to things unrelated to coaches, recruiting, and winning, if they want to restore some lost luster to this program, it's time to get their act together on game day experience, and the basic aesthetics of being in The Convo. Because right now, the folks running the show can't simply blame wins and losses or coaching success or lack of, on the waning numbers of bodies in the seats. When you go to hire the next coach, you'd be wise to approach this from an all-in rebrand of the basketball program and the facility itself. Being honest, I personally have minimal faith in that actually happening, or being done close to the right way.
Very interesting to review the posts in this thread. Guess the hashtags were spot on for this post and so is OUCountry talking about an all-in rebrand of the basketball program and the convo. Hopefully, today is the dawn of a new era for everything that surrounds Ohio basketball and its game day experience.

Glad to see that Schaus went out of his so called box and is bringing in one of OUr own, this is a great hire and I bet Boals will bring in another former Ohio alum and to add to his coaching staff. Not sure how anyone can not be excited over this hire, I will actually NOW get my season tickets back instead of hand picking games to go to.

I'm probably alone in this, but while I know that it's likely that Geno follows him, this hire doesn't yet excite me from the "one of OUr own" side of things, other than the fact that I know it'll result in bringing more folks from the age of 45+ back into the fold. I didn't need an Ohio grad to get me excited. I needed excitement around the basketball program, and the AD leading the way to doing things a little better.

If they do well on the court, the fact that it's one of our own will mean a lot more. I'm excited and interested to hear what Jeff has to say about coming home. And I'm interested to see what, if anything, they do moving forward to improve the atmosphere and fan experience as a whole.

Put me in the "wait and see" category for now. The fact that the presser that was to be live streamed is crashing isn't a great start in the 're-brand', if that's what they're hoping for, for what it's worth.

We can agree on a lot of things - this included. I just don't always agree with what I perceive as a negative tact that you take. Part of that is on me too I suppose.

I'm part of the wait-and-see crowd too. The fact that Coach Boals is an Ohio grad means bupkus to me. Two of the more successful coaches, Nee and Groce, weren't Bobcat alumni at all yet took the team to a great amount of success. So I could care less that he's a former player. So what.

That being said, I am excited to see Boals become coach. I think he can do great things and he did at least have some success at Stony Brook. Of course, that too means squat; I'm excited for every coach Ohio hires and Saul won an NCAA tourney game with an underdog team before coming to Ohio, so what do I know?

So who actually watched Stony Brook play? What should we be expecting? Should we all stand up and cheer the first time we see a zone defense?

It's not a "wow" hire in my book, and I'm certainly in the wait-and-see crowd too. I feel that there were better coaches out there at least worth an interview. It's obvious that he was the only candidate - and to me, that's a lazy and uninspiring search process.

He's had a couple quality years in a low-major conference, with his highlight year including a bounce in the quarterfinals. He was not O$U's primary recruiter by any stretch, so I feel like that is overstated.

To me, it just feels like a middling to above-average MAC hire. In his first year, so long as we finish above #11 seed, it will be seen as "progress". But the true test will be seasons 3-5. Buffalo has reset the bar in this conference.

The potential is there - but we have a long way to go to be among the MAC's elite again.

I think calling it progress to be better than an 11 seed for the MAC Tourney is dependent on the players he and his staff are able to retain, and who they're able to recruit. For example, retain the key returning players, retain McDay, successfully recruit Roderick, and I would hope the expectation would be top half of the league next year. Flip side, lose guys like Jordan, Jason, Ben, or Lunden's commit, and it's a different story, because filling their shoes at this stage of the game will be tough. Also, some will talk about filling Doug's shoes as being vital. While there's some truth to that, getting guards and wings that can really play is much more important in my opinion. Look no farther than UB or BG to see how having 5 to 7 good guards/wings can improve a team's chances to do well in the MAC.

Agree. And Nee knew squat about Ohio when he came, but was successful with Brooklyn and Philly kids. There are different formulae that work. Having said that, I too am excited about Boals. He's been through the trenches which is good. And he knows Ohio well, also a plus. His Stony Brook team came from everywhere, including England. And he has coaches from Hargrave. All good.

From a source very familiar with the low-mid major college basketball landscape:

"Once Oats leaves in a couple weeks (when Buffalo goes deep in the tournament), OU will undoubtedly have the best coach in the conference. Boals is a really good coach"

Wish him success.

Let’s see based on some recent history:
Schaus doesn’t hire Ohio grads-false
Schaus and Boles don’t get along and have bad blood because of previous hires-false
Ohio won’t pay the next guy that much money-false
Nellis doesn’t support athletics-apparently false

There’s so much bad info on here that’s it’s difficult to believe any of it.

Will address these one at a time:
Schaus doesn't hire Ohio grads: must have learned his lesson because the trend went that way for a while with external jobs and departmental jobs.
Schaus and Boals don't get along due to previous interviews: Hatchets must have been buried.
Ohio won't pay the next that much money: shocking because again, budget cuts came across the dept big time if you haven't noticed (see coffee fiasco with basketball office)
Nellis doesn't support athletics: Time will tell if rev's don't pick up. That said, good sign here to see the money was rolled out on this venture. Let's see what July 1 looks like with athletics budget.

Post of the year -- so far at least!

============

What can one believe on this board? It used to be that only SBH and I would just make things up out of whole cloth. Now everyone does it. One doesn't know who to believe.

I know one poster who has already told us a number of things that Boals must do in the next few months if he is to be successful at OHIO. I suspect that Boals may not follow this BA blueprint for his next actions, and he might still be successful. I guess you might call me a BA heretic.
