I find it laughable that some are serious when they say that Buffalo is the best MAC basketball team of all-time because they lost in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tourney to the Big XII champs and one of the top ten teams in the country.
It's even more laughable that some think the Sweet 16 Ohio team or the Elite Eight Kent teams are hands down better?
C'mon. Kent was 7-4 entering MAC play the year they made their run.
Ohio's best non-NCAA tourney win was at 20-12 Northern Iowa that year.
Both Ohio and Kent had magical runs in the tournament. It was awesome! Both were extremely memorable and will forever be etched in time.
But how quickly are we to dismiss Buffalo's 32 wins ... being ranked for EVERY WEEK but the first one. The last team from the MAC to be ranked going into the NCAA tournament was the 1989 Ball State team ... 30 years ago!!! They were #18.
Buffalo was ranked in the Top 20 11 weeks! It wasn't like they were just hovering around #25 all year. They entered the NCAA tourney ranked #15.
C'mon!
Do you want to go back to the 1962 BG team that was Top Ten entering the tournament ... and then lost in the 1st round?
That was a joke.
You cannot compare 1960s college basketball to 2010s college basketball.
In the modern era ... no MAC team has had a full season like Buffalo.
We've seen teams make great runs in the NCAA tournament ... but nobody put together a November through March like Buffalo did.
I'm sorry. They got a bad draw in the tourney and ran into a buzzsaw vs. a really good Texas Tech team. That doesn't erase what they did this year.
And if Nate Oats is okay with making $850k at UB (and it sounds like he is) ... they are going to be a force for a long time in this league. Makes Jeff Boals' job that much tougher to get Ohio back to the mountain top.
Stick to football analysis.
They had only 32 teams in the 60's so playing someone tough from the first go. You wouldn't be making fun of Nate Thurmon or Howard Komives would you? When two Bulls play in the NBA (before expansion) then tell me how great the Bulls are vs old Bugs.
Ball State team is light years up on Buffalo and nearly upsetting the eventual UNLV Tarkanian bunch.
Watching Buffalo against the MAC and they were superior and won close ones because of their poise. But the team would only go as far as Harris could take them and he came up small against TT. A great player would have still found ways to put his team on his back. The bulls weren't even competitive in the game statistically.
With GOOD Ivo on the floor along with Walt and Reg along with TJ and Jon Smith coming off the bench I think we beat them 6 out of 10 times on a neutral court. (I'll give the nod to Harris and Massenburg getting the superior marks over Coop and Kellogg)
This is what's great about message boards.
Agree to disagree.
Comparing 1960s college basketball today is absurd.
No one is suggesting that Thurmond or Komives weren't good. But that BG played one ranked team all year. Not like they were world beaters. Oh ... and they faced unranked Butler in NCAA 1st Rd & lost. The comparison is just silly. Plus I think Harris, Perkins & Massenburg all get NBA looks. Don't think they'll all make it. But you make it sound like their roster was full of clowns.
And that 89 Ball team was good ... but I think you're confusing them and the 1990 Sweet Sixteen team. The 90 team made a great run but they needed 3 straight MAC tourney wins to just get in. The 89 team was the one that was ranked at the end of year and got knocked out of NCAAs in 2nd round. (Hmmm ... who does that sound like?) But their best wins were a home win vs 15-16 Purdue and road wins at Minnesota & Northwestern. Sorry. I'm not buying them as better and surely not running circles around Buffalo.
And if you mean 1990 Ball team ... they needed to win MAC Tourney just to get in at 24-6 before their run.
Neither team can say they were ranked all season and won at WVU & Syracuse and won 32 games.
The fact you even throw in Ohio sweet 16 team is crazy. I LOVED that team ... but not sure their season was on par with Buffalo's. They lost to Robert Morris and 5 MAC games.
Their run was amazing. And they were super talented. And maybe in a mythical matchup they could beat Buffalo. Bottom line is, they didn't have a season as completely dominant as Buffalo.
Bulls have a bad game vs Tech and you want to write them off as chumps. C'mon.
