My dad went to Lehigh in the 1940's.

At that time the were pretty much engineering only.

Hence the teams were the Engineers.

Over the years they expanded their degree offerings,but kept the team name.

Then a few years ago they decided,even though they remained primarily an engineering school,that,to reflect the school's educational diversity,to change the team names to Mountain Hawks.

Bitter doesn't begin to describe how the Alumni felt.

So if they are so offended, considering that the vast majority had ancestors who were colonists, maybe they should just return from whence their respective families came. This whole "I'm offended" routine is getting tiring even for a moderate registered Democrat.

If it isn't already, "Tribe" will probably be deemed offensive in 5-10 more years so they'll have to change that too.

As this applies to sports, it was interesting to hear Geno Auriemma's comments yesterday about this generation. He mentioned that coaches are afraid of being too difficult, as students are quick to go on social media or elsewhere and cry bullying and that the players are very quick to be offended and transfer. While I'm not a big fan of the man, I do believe he is correct to a point. Tough coaches are now seen as mean coaches. The two are not necessarily synonymous.

I can't wait for the Patriots (that's not offensive, is it?) to have a young player whose parents claim that Bill Belichick is too mean to their child.

Just spitballing, but if I were a Native American I doubt I'd be all that fond of a name bestowed on me by the same group of people that carried out a genocide against my people.

I don't know that I'd necessarily describe it as "terribly racist" or even a prejorative, but I think when you kill pretty much the entirety of an ethnic group, you gotta understand that that re-contextualizes some things for the folks that are still around. If nothing else, I think it's probably just the wise move to defer to their judgment about what they're offended by.

I think we ought rename Lake Erie, Lake Iroquois in honor of the victors in the Erie-Iroquois wars of the mid 1600s, when very few white men were around to witness the slaughter. The Iroquois were much better warriors and as a result the Erie tribe became nearly extinct. Perhaps, this is why Cleveland sports team are so bad, they live near a lake named after a bunch of losers. The Mistake-on-the-Lake is really the Mistaken-Name-Lake. And, the Cleveland Indians should be the Iroquois Warriors! Let's start picking winner names! To hell with political correctness.

The actual genocidal maniacs in this story were the Seneca tribe, part of the Iroquois Confederation. Here's a brief summary of the war:

I guess it comes down to when you went there.

You said your wife went to Lehigh.

Until 1971-1972 Lehigh was all male.

I graduated high school around that time,and Lehigh was one of the schools I applied to.

I remember going there for a visit.All the buzz was about the school going co-ed.
There seemed to be both excitement and dread on the part of the students.

My dad, and the people he went to school with,did not share in the "excitement".

My dad and his friends got over their objections to the school going co-ed.

I was offended when we changed our logo from the paw to the attack cat since I had just gotten a tattoo of the paw. I was pissed for years but finally came around to the attack cat. No tattoo though.

And I find that at age 47, I'm still just as capable of making stupid decisions as I was at 22, although I like to think I make dumb decisions less and and less. Then again, I am driving a Hyundai Accent hatchback, so I can't be that bright right now.

As a Cleveland Indians fan, it's long overdue that Chief Wahoo is gone. But lets be real. Dolan made that decision because he was ordered to by MLB and Cleveland wouldn't have gotten the all-star game this year if he hadn't. Eventually, the name Indians will be gone too.
