Having monitored the demise of The Dispatch, I'm not surprised no one was there. I was surprised we didn't have questions from WOUB and The Post. I'm sure she was surprised as well.

She is very articulate. I was impressed.
She came off as an academic, which I like. High level. Hoping her demeanor and choice of words could help build bridges with faculty on campus. I hear they arent pleased with the basketball salary and the pressure of budget cuts.

Am I the only one that thought President Nellis really stumbled through this introduction and press conference?

Interesting how different people interpret the same thing. I didnt' get that at all. My take aways sitting there and talking with her later were - integrity, transparency and communication.

Just from viewing online, I came away with both of these perspectives -- somewhat academic, but also integrity, transparency and good communication skills (which includes listening with ones ears open). Your two perspectives are not mutually exclusive.

Good following this thread and the hiring process. For the record, listening to faculty at ...now 7 colleges and unis off the top of my head....not one of them from English Dept Chairs to Deans over the Physical Therapy and Athletic Training Depts are happy with ANY coaching salaries including D3 coaches. I have heard "they should be on the level or below what anyone ACTUALLY teaching is making"

In the release Julie says she has a 100 day plan to get immerse herself in the the athletics culture as a first step. Essentially it will cover the fall semester. Then after that she is going to unveil a strategic plan athletics. Hopefully it will be more definitive than OBC annual reports with a new facility plan included.

I agree with this opinion. Our coaches should not make any more than a dean or at least in that range. It's one thing if we make money on athletics, but we don't.

I have to disagree with this. The deans are likely not making money in their program, either. We are not a for-profit institution, so we shouldn't be solely beholden to if we turn a profit or not. It's also difficult to determine what is a profit. How much of the fundraising is a result of the football team's success? Has that brought in more money for the university? How is that determined? We know that athletics are the face of a university.

If we only paid our coaches, say $120,000, we would never have quality athletics. It is a supply/demand world and if other places are willing to pay more for quality, they're going to go there. Yes, coaches make more than deans, but they don't earn tenure. They are at the mercy of their success or failure. It is a high risk/high reward field. Succeed, get paid. Fail, get fired. And that success is measurable, whereas that of a dean is much more subjective and they may be secured by their tenure and basically be untouchable.

You make a few good points. However a dean makes much more than 120k. And I also said somewhere in the range. Does anyone know what a dean makes? So if a dean makes 250-300, a coach should make no more than 350ish. Other MAC programs are paying in that range.

It seems to me that the new AD is heavy in governance -NCAA, and not so heavy in development - money raising. I still think she’s a pretty good hire. Time will tell.

I haven't heard any mention from her about competitiveness, winning championships, etc. Seems she's a compliance/academic focus. If her expertise is there, fine. But what fans want the most appears to have been swept under the rug.

Exactly. The ONLY Alumni I know that really give a lasting crap about their alma mater are Bobcat sports fans. Every other OU grad I know speaks kindly of their time there, mentions they haven't been back in X number of decades, then turns the OSU game back on. College athletics has value that goes beyond the P&L.

We must run in different crowds. I know tons of OU alums who aren't sports fans and do more than speak kindly about the university. They give of their time and money and the money isn't going to athletics.

I suggest you go to an alumni association event in NYC, Boston, Pittsburgh or other big city. These people LOVE Ohio but have not connected with the sports programs for a variety for reasons. Alumni have a very strong connection with OU, perhaps more than most public institutions this size. Hell, go to the St. Paddy's Day parade in Cleveland and see how many Ohio sweatshirts/jackets are in the crowd.

I don’t go to Ohio alumni meetings because they’re in Denver, not Colorado Springs, but I know there is a group there. Last time I saw I was the only Ohio Bobcat club member in Colorado but that may have changed. Most Ohio alums I run into out here tell me they never go to ball games in Athens so I’m pretty rare doing that here.

I've been to a couple of NYC Alumni Association events.

They were geared more to recent alums, then older alums like me.

The recent alums don't seem to have the same attachment to/love of Bobcat Athletics older alums do.

When O.U. had their "Night of Court Street" at the Waldorf, there were a lot more people who follow sports.

Most of the O.U. alums around north Jersey where I live, bleed green, when it comes to Bobcat sports.

Regardless of sport interest, there does seem to be universal interest in the
110.
In fact a number of alums were hoping for a Varsity Show, the last time the 110 was in the Macy's Parade.

In this case, I agree with SBH and Alan. While I know tons of people who fit the category Andrew describes, I know just as many or more who aren't really Ohio sports fans that I get to join us for a gameday in Athens so they can simply **BE in Athens** for a day or weekend. They want to walk uptown, and through campus just as much or more than they want to go to the game.

That said, I think the "sports is the front porch" thing is spot on. When Ohio sports is doing well, people are talking about it, asking me about it, texting me about it. Sports is such a huge part of our culture that the teams doing well draws positive attention to Ohio as a whole, and I think even those who aren't big sports fans enjoy it. It brings back OU memories and starts up conversations and stories with old OU friends.

I totally disagree with this. One of the women's sports at Arkansas, women's track and field, just won a national championship. I think Cromer has the fire in her belly to win. And wasn't she involved in the Bielema dismissal at Arkansas? That was all about not winning enough.

Not saying she's not about that. I just haven't heard it from her in interviews or the press conference.

In the statement on this site, she ends with “winning championships” so that’s probably important for her.
