I understand that the goal is to get the best hire.

So, a quick process that ends in Christian can work.  We all hope it does.

But did we really need to move so swiftly.  If Boals was a legit candidate, isn't he busy thru at least today..certainly totally committed untio last Saturday night?

Classy comments by Jeff Boals.

Solid reporting as well.

Why does it suck?

The university makes a commitment to try to get to the next level as a consistent mid-major power --- and apparently is willing to pay what's necessary ($600K). That's what many here have been wanting -- the next level. So we hire a proven coach, who has shown he can win and the response is underwhelming.

Boals may be a good  guy and a good assistant coach but he's yet to be a head coach. Could he accomplish what Schaus wants? We likely will never know. But the probability of it happening is higher with Christian than with anyone who doesn't have head coaching experience at Division I.

Just because Boals won a poll here on Bobcat Attack doesn't mean he was the most qualified candidate.  And just because he's an alum also doesn't improve his resume.

My question?

Does Christian ("proven winner") play the same style as the present team is used to?  For some reason, thinking back to Kent when he was there, I think not, but don't really know.  If he comes in and plays his style we will all be in for a long year next season!  I thought continuity was real key in a new hire here!  Did we get that?  If not, it could be a few years before the "proven winner" gets going!  Like starting over again.

From the Columbus Dispatch article earlier today:

Christian is known as a disciplinarian whose teams play hard-nosed defense.

Time will tell .... but if he can maintain or up the intensity even more on the defense end we'll be tough next year.

Agreed. I read a guy being very gracious in not being the selected successor in Athens. Thinking Dragon could be reading between a couple too many lines on this one.

Hiring Christian is a surprise, but how is this a nightmare? Because an Ohio alum didn't get the job? If our vote had counted the last time, John Rhodes and not John Groce would have been the coach.

So let's say JSF is right and he does feel stiffed. Does it matter? How does that affect our season next year and seasons to come? Perhaps on the recruiting circuit maybe...but I assume Boals will make the most of the opportunities presented. He will becomes HC at a mid-major school. He will either deliver or not, and will move up(like Groce and Geno) or out(like TOS and Hahn). I appreciate the classy and direct manner in which he responded to the questions.

Next best thing...a spouse of an Ohio alum got the job...If the wife's happy....the whole household is happy.

They both sound like great people.  The Kent fans speak highly of him and then the previous linked article on her drawings she made for all of the seniors on the TCU team sounded really appreciated by the players.

Uh, that's if all the guys (and recruits) stay. Which, as with most places, won't happen.

There were choppy waters when O'Tool took over from Hunter and the same when Groce took over from O'Tool. Expect nothing different next year.

He'll need to bring in his guys (JUCO transfers) to get complete buy-in.

His comments sound like those by anyone who was interviewed and turned down for a job they wanted. It sucks but you move on.

Unless I've missed some late breaking news (possible), those guys in Oxford are still looking for a coach.  Suppose they hire Jeff?  I don't like the spell of them apples.

I would be more concerned if they just hired a proven coach with more MAC titles than our previous four coaches combined.

I don't think a brief conversation equals an interview. Boals deserved a least a face to face meeting in NOLA. Fresno showed him more respect last year.

And, if you don't like that direction, talk to some other folks this week. What's the rush with Sloppy Seconds from Kent State?

I believe he was not one of the seven men flown to Oxford for in-person interviews.

Why does he automatically deserve a face to face official interview?   What if Jim Schaus thinks he isn't a very promising coach?   Do we waste his and our time by setting up an interview?   Just because he's an alum, dresses nicely and has been reported in the media as an ideal candidate doesn't make it so.  I'm probably Jeff Boals biggest fan on these boards and I was excited at the prospect of him being our next coach but I don't really know a thing about him.   I don't know if he's brilliant or a guy who players roll their eyes at in meetings.  I'm sorry you feel it's necessary to trash everybody and everything when you don't know jack@@@@ about anything or anybody involved.

You think this board is going crazy over the christian hire, just imagine the meltdown on hawktalk if hipster is the guy.  Of course, enough people would have to care about Miami basketball for a true meltdown.

I have only one concern with this move by Schaus.  If you're going to pay nearly twice the salary of the last coach and rely on alumni and donors for support in doing it, you better be right.  It'll be hard to put that salary genie back in the bottle if the program doesn't continue to rise.

I'm also one who doesn't think that being an alum, a good guy and an on-court warrior equates to a HC position.  Question: if you're going to pay $600K and you want those alum chacteristics, why isn't Geno getting the nod over Boals anyway?
