its the smart move because JC is a seasoned veteran. Regardless of how talented Boals and Ford are there is going to be a learning curve for a first year head coach. A fully intact sweet 16 team doesn't need to be the guinea pig for a noob.

looks like TCU is widely regarded as a program that has been ignored and underfunded by the administration. Doesn't seem to be a lot of people blaming JC for their lack of success.

No, Gary Waters recruited the team Heath brought to the Elite 8. Heath brought in Antonio Gates, and Christian followed the one-and-done Heath. He had to rebuild somewhat (except Gates) following the Elite 8 season.

Christian has the highest winning percentage in MAC history.

But zero postseason wins there isn't making anyone here happy.

To be fair there have been plenty of off court issues at Ohio in recent years under Groce and O'shea, and our academic standing has been questionable as evidenced by a lost scholarship last year.  It happens to almost every program to some extent.  Hopefully Christian has learned from his previous experiences and can carry that over here.

I will say, Christian's Kent teams profile pretty closely to Groce's Ohio teams. Good defense, forces turnovers. Played slower than Groce's teams, though.

If in fact we are offering a base salary in the $600K range I have no problem with that.  At least it shows a commitment from the Administration to take the program up a notch.  If we want to improve/elevate the program to the next level and beyond, we will have to get use to spending more $$$.  This coupled with improvements to the Convo are a good thing.  As for Christian himself, I will take a wait and see approach.

Ooops, thanks for correcting my memory of the KSU coaching chain.  I apparently I got it assbackward.  But, I did get his post-season record right, and it is worrisome.

No... We're actually Illinois.... I know that's hard to wrap your head around (trust me, I'm having a hard time with it too) but Ohio is a MUCH better job than TCU, Big 12 or not. This is actually a sign of how successful we are right now - that a sitting head coach would leave the Big 12 behind to come here... Pretty flattering actually

To go 'back' to the MAC there is a problem somewhere. Player issues, AD issues, - something.

I hope someone presses him on the WHY?? in the press conference.

Not the young 'hot shot' we wanted. Looks like JS went with the 'Frank' style hire. So I hope he is good and can recruit cause I doubt he will go anywhere.

The more I read about him I don't feel quite as bad. But my chin still hurts from where it hit the ground when I first heard.

OCF New Flash-this is NOT like Bandy after Snyder.  Bandy was not a head coach and had, I think, no experience away from Ohio.  Next, transfers or jucos what is the difference?  Bassett and Offutt made our tourney teams go.  And, this guy is a proven winner not an up and commer.  While maybe not thrilled, I think this guy can move the program.  And, maybe he sticks around for a while.  As I have said in two other posts, expectations are probably NOT reasonable right now and whoever the next coach is needs to be given some slack.

Interesting hire. Like another poster stated, I remember not liking Jim much in my college days because he was damn good. Other MAC fans didn't like Groce for this same reason.

I feel like Kent has/had to rely of JUCOs because of the non-resident feel of the campus. Hopefully Schaus made it clear that he wants less JUCOs and more recruits. I think Jim will be able to recruit much better in Athens due to all of the advantages our program has over Kent.

On the surface, at least, it's not exactly a "Frank-type" hire.  Frank had a better overall record and post-season record:

Fun fact of the day...

both Jim Christian and John Groce are part of the Herb Sendek coaching tree. Christian's first Division I job was an assistant at Miami under Sendek with two guys named Charlie Coles and Sean Miller. When Sendek went to NC  State, Christian went to Pitt under Ralph Willard, Charlie took over the Miami program and Groce took his first Division I job on Sendek's first staff at NC State.

You're correct about the lack of head coaching experience with Dale Bandy.  I was just referring to the sinking feeling in my stomach at the thought of JC in Athens reminded me of the sinking feeling when I saw Bandy-Ball.  But that was so last hour, I'm feeling better about this potential hire the more I think about it.  Maybe by tomorrow, I'll be able to convince myself that we've just hired the next Johnny Wooden/Thad Mada/Cam Henderson/Coach K.

That 'Frank - style' statement was more toward the big league BACK to a smaller league at a point in their life ( I know Jim is younger) that they may retire at this level. No thought given to their records, or why they went back.

So this hire feels like the AD wanted someone who was going to make this their last stop? Am I reading this correctly? 

Christian only makes sense if the decision makers see him as a "program guy". Someone who isn't likely to jump at the "next big thing". Schaus must feel like he'll be here for a long time if he wins......or at least that was how he talked himself in to this one. 

Does he have credentials in the MAC? Sure but it seems so bizarre to hire a retread from the ghosts of conference past. Can't put my finger on it. The best word to explain it is... odd. 

He doesn't strike me as the "rally around the program" candidate that I felt like Ohio needed. I hope I'm wrong but I have that uneasy feeling in my stomach about this one....

So much talent, so many expectations and yet so many question marks.

OCF, I hear ya.  I saw way to much Bandy-ball and hahn-ball.  I think JC could be a whole lot better than either.  Maybe not the OHIO ties many of us would have liked but I think he'll be a winner.

I'm thinking the "uneasiness" is 90% because he was never mentioned or listed on here.  On paper, he certainly does have a lot of logical attributes and unlike the top choices listed here, has some resume documentation of being able to do the job.  Ford/Boals had more of the "we think they could do the job" and they're names were familiar with. 

Shocked me too, but it's growing on me.
