So, what are some realistic changes you'd try to make if you were AD.

I would try to get coaches to schedule tougher out of conference games in all sports (but especially basketball) with the understanding that I'm not gonna fire them just because they didn't win those games.

She certainly was in a tough spot there, as acting AD, while they were looking for a new AD. I think she did a good job at the presser. Looks like a tough cookie to me.

She dealt with SEC fans and alumni. She's going to think we're the sanest, most reasonable people in the world.

"Wait. You guys want soft pretzels and industrial hand dryers? That's the entire wish list? And you're only mildly upset we haven't won a football championship since the Nixon administration AND won't revert to poisoning 100-year old trees of our rival's campus? Where am I?"

I'm usually not one to pile on...oh who am I kidding. I must run in different alumni circles as well. Rarely a day went by this summer when my social media feeds did not have posts and pictures of friends visiting OU and the Athens area. I think the disconnect with some people in this post is that you have to be fanatic for the sports teams. In their opinion, if you are not a die hard for the teams that they fervently follow (i.e. women's basketball), then you disrespecting the school. This could not be further from the truth. I realize this is a dose of reality that is difficult to swallow but not all graduates follow Bobcat athletics and that's okay. People are free to celebrate OU and Athens as they see fit.

Alumni have a very strong connection with OU, perhaps more than most public institutions this size. Hell, go to the St. Paddy's Day parade in Cleveland and see how many Ohio sweatshirts/jackets are in the crowd.
In this case, I agree with SBH and Alan. While I know tons of people who fit the category Andrew describes, I know just as many or more who aren't really Ohio sports fans that I get to join us for a gameday in Athens so they can simply **BE in Athens** for a day or weekend. They want to walk uptown, and through campus just as much or more than they want to go to the game.

That said, I think the "sports is the front porch" thing is spot on. When Ohio sports is doing well, people are talking about it, asking me about it, texting me about it. Sports is such a huge part of our culture that the teams doing well draws positive attention to Ohio as a whole, and I think even those who aren't big sports fans enjoy it. It brings back OU memories and starts up conversations and stories with old OU friends.
Your asking alumni to support something when in their eyes we haven't been very good. Most of the D1 programs that are on a higher level got there after a period of high level success, a golden era of 8-10 years of consistently strong performance. The only Ohio sport that you could argue has had its "golden era" already is Volleyball with nine MAC titles in a ten year period. In other sports all we've had is a taste as to what the program could be. Until then I think we need to just keep doing what we are doing; chipping away at facility improvements and bringing in experienced coaches. Try to get P5 equivalent facilities like UC has because if we can do that it would put the Ohio job on a permanent different level than its MAC counterparts.

2 points-our facilities-they aren’t bad, but we’re just keeping up with our MAC brethren and will never be great as long as we’ve still got Peden which is to say the least is 50 years out of date.
Hiring experienced coaches is tough with our budget and if they’re successful here, they’re out of here. There’s so much disparity now between the big boys and our pay levels, there’s no chance of keeping the good ones. Volleyball that you mentioned is a good example of my point and I doubt even that ( his staying 9-10 years) would happen in today’s world of haves and have nots. We couldn’t even keep our softball coach after some good years and I’m guessing our women’s BB coach will be on some short lists real soon.

IMO overall Ohio is in the top 1/3 of the MAC in facilities. The Convo expanded with a basketball facility would take it about to the P5 level given some of the other improvements and that it already has 13,000 seats. With Peden I agree that's a tough one. New student stands with a Boise State curved upper deck could work. A permanent team store and a total bathroom/concession upgrade on that side of the stadium. The problem isn't that Peden is out of date as much as its a cracker box. For some of the games there isn't enough seats for the students so they have to sit on the hill.

Agree with you re: basketball facilities - a practice facility that could be shared by men's and women's hoops, and volleyball would be a huge addition for Ohio Athletics.

Regarding Peden, in my opinion, the opportunity to improve the "student side" as you mention was missed when Walter Fieldhouse was built. Imagine a comprehensive plan that included that facility, and the Sook Center as part of a complete renovation of Peden.

Sook was more the opportunity missed to do more to fix Peden. Attaching the Fieldhouse to Peden might have hemmed in future growth. Ping Center was built with a special student assessment and there is talk of relocating the ice rink and swimming pool there. Could another assessment for the Ping Center work and throw in a new student side for Peden at the same time? That may be the best way to get it done.

I had heard about moving the ice rink next to Ping.
The rationale was to save on energy costs.

I know they had talked about a new aquatic center.
But I thought they were looking at a couple of possible locations.

Haven't heard anything about either project for a while.

As I've posted before,if the ice rink project goes ahead,
it should be possible to convert Bird Arena to a Practice Facility
for basketball and volleyball.

Since you've already got the building,it would be a lot cheaper then
starting from scratch.

To me,the Practice Facility is more critical then improvements to
student side of Peden.
