This game will be held almost exactly 50 years (December 6, 1969) since the Rick Mount lead Purdue Boilermakers came to the Convo and lost 80-79. Adding to the appeal of that game was the fact that Purdue had played in the national championship game the previous season, losing to UCLA.

The win was also the second of a string of four successive games, and four straight wins, against Big Ten competition (Northwestern, Purdue, Ohio State, .Indiana). The game still ranks number one for me in my experiences at the Convo. I will concede, however, that I was at a more impressionable age then. ;)

I know many on here know all about this but perhaps some do not. Did any others on the board attend the game? I seem to remember one or two having mentioned it in the past.
I also was at the Convo for the Purdue game and was at St. John Arena to see our Bobcats beat the Buckeyes. I also remember watching Ohio play Wisconsin in a later game that season. Although they lost that one by 3 pts, I think that may have been their best played contest of that memorable season.

Here is a Sports Illustrated article (Febuary 16, 1970) that does a good job of oommunicating the essence of this Bobcat "Golden Age" team as well and the success of Coach Snyder:

I'm amazed people exist that think moving a game to 9:00 to get on ESPN2 is a bad move. It is the actual channel ESPN2, the one in hundreds of millions of TVs.

Basketball only takes 2 hours. The game will end around the same time the MACtion football games end. Those of us who travel 1-2 hours to the games can still make this, easily.

It's Purdue, it's ESPN...in the Convo. Get your butt to the Convo, the sleepy Wednesday morning won't kill you.
Moving the game to 9pm to get on espn isn't a bad move, just makes it that more convenient for folks who need to drive to stay at home. 8pm tip and its a whole nother story.

that ou game against unc was great. if offut made that free throw ou probably would have won but would have had thier chalk absloutely rocked by the jay hawks in the next game. unc looked ready to blow the cats out but some good three shooting and unc not having kendall marshal made all the difference. kansas would have whipped the cats from start to finish.

Best thing about being at the UNC Ohio sweet 16 game was slowly coming back from a big deficit.

The Cats had a good 25% of fans, but slowly NC state and Kansas fans joined us rooting for the upset.

I'm not sure we win if Walter hit tgat late free throw, I'm sure they would have crashed the rim on last shot.

I held my breath on DJ half courtier at the buzzer right in front of me. It looked gooooood. Woulda been an all time march madness moment had it dropped.

You ever play the 'What If' game about UNC?

What if...we win? We go face a Kansas team that's stacked, but who knows, right? Maybe we pull it out.

Game is played on March 23, 2012. If we win, our next game is March 25, 2012. That's when Groce interviews with Illinois. Maybe he doesn't interview.

We keep Groce, he doesn't want to leave an Elite Eight, maybe Final Four team. We get Evan Bradds and Caris LaVert in possibly Ohio's greatest recruiting class. We become the Midwest Gonzaga by building a constant stream to the NCAA tournament.

At least that's what it looks like in my head. It's a pointless exercise, but it does get us a faux title in 2013.

I used the play this game about the 1969-70 team. What if we played anyone but UND in the first round, where Austin Carr had the best game of his career and set all kinds of NCAA records. Early in that season this team had been ranked 5th in the AP poll for two weeks after consecutive victories over Northwestern, Purdue (at home), Ohio State, and Indiana. After losing to Texas they dropped to 9th, and then slowly dropped out of the rankings all together once the MAC season started, only to reemerge at #17 in the final pre-tournament poll. This team was 21-4 (9-1 MAC) going into the tournament and look destined for at least a Sweet 16, if not Final Four finish. However, they ran into a buzz saw with Notre Dame. I used to play the alternate reality game and wonder what might have happened if our first round matchup had been with another school. I guess being a Bobcat fan gives lots of opportunities for the "what if" game.

If Ohio had beaten UNC and Kansas to reach the Final Four, our opponent would have been Ohio State.

I had a dream.

The Purdue game was moved to Grover Center. It had been converted back into a gym. Something to do with a dispute about how lockers at the convo were numbered.

I've got to quit smoking meth before bed.

Not much chatter about this, but Purdue plays a late Sunday afternoon game in Lincoln, NE. Not the easiest travel from Lincoln to Athens after game. Maybe Purdue comes out sleep walking in first half. Dare to dream.

I tried to rearrange my schedule a bit to make this one, but it’s not going to happen from Cleveland. Anyone who wants a pair of gold-level tix can PM me. “Pay” what you like by donating to whatever Ohio University department you care to support.

That sucks as they had a great chance to come to the convo ranked in top 25. Yep....they will be a tad angry.

won't be able to get over Tuesday but happy to watch it on ESPN. Matt will be home saturday to be inducted into the Delta HS HOF. Coach Painter has come a long way since seeing him play a couple miles from the farm. Would be really nice to give him a loss on the road. Saw Miami in the Delta gym this last saturday night...they are really recruiting Indiana hard these days. Go Cats.

Great article about the “old Bobcats “ With my limited IPhone skills I sent it onto several Bobcats of
Those years. Just hope I hit the right buttons.
Thanks for finding this one
Just remember these words:

Their gigantic center, Haarms, left yesterday's game with a concussion. I can't imagine they'd let him play tomorrow.

The two guys that killed us last year, Edwards and Cline, are both gone. They only have two seniors on the roster who get meaningful minutes, and then the big guy Haarms is also an upperclassman. Other than that, lots of young guys like us.

Stefanovic is the best shooter, aside from him not the greatest shooting team from outside. But with the Convo being a similar building to their own they shouldn't have issues with familiarity you wouldn't think. It's gonna be tough to keep them out of the middle and rebound against their size.

They're #11 in KenPom's Adjusted Efficiency and #343 in Adjusted Tempo. So they're gonna slow it way, way down and work for good shots. They're also #5 in Adjusted Defense, so it's going to be like pulling teeth for us trying to get good shots. We're gonna need to get out and run and speed the tempo up, with kick outs to Jordy and BRod for open jumpers in transition.

Roderick is still out, yes? Hopefully Dartis is back. I can't imagine we win if he is either out or vanished like against Villanova.

Haarms out with concussion protocol evens the size matchup a little. I don't think we'll be outclassed there.

Maybe BRod is still out, I don't know. I was hoping he comes back for this (wishful thinking).

My impression is Roderick out and Dartis back.

Curious to see the line. I imagine we will be 12-15 point dogs.

Purdue is a bit of a jeckle and hyde type of team this year. The beat a top 5 Virginia team bad, but lost at a mediocre Nebraska team by double digits. This is a rare true road game for them at a midmajor so there is the chance they could lay an egg and this could be closer than the last meeting. Bobcats are undersized and thin depth and very young compared to Purdue. I think the score and margin depends how Purdue plays. They could blow us out with their talent, or they could lay that egg that comes with a true road game. Bobcats got nothing to lose. Everybody expects Purdue to win by 20 points or more, but....this is basketball and this game is in Athens.
