I have watched a lot of Ohio basketball games through the years and I’ve never seen a worst 20 minute performance by a Bobcats basketball team. It doesn’t get more embarrassing than that 20 minute first half display against one of the worst teams in the MAC. It’s like we didn’t want to get on the bus. And I have no idea what has happened to Preston over the last 10 games. Now Ohio could very well come back and win in the second half and it would not surprise me. However, I’m in a state of shock over what I just watched in that first 20 minutes. 5-28 from the field in first half. Can’t make that up. Down only 7 at the half is a miracle. If this were Akron, we’d be down 35 at half.
This is not the first time we've put up this type of turd at EMU. I think we had a 15 point first half under Groce way back when. That might have been our sweet 16 team. Add in a 76-40 clunker in Saul's first year.

Only down 7 with that terrible half? Okay, maybe we have a chance in the 2nd half against this bad EMU team.
Anyone know why Murrell out? I cannot find anything. And why no McMurray or Springs? I have a bad feeling those 3 are basically going to be told that they need to find brighter pastures.
I heard that Murrell is out. Apparently re-aggravated his injury.

They. Are. Young.
I have no problems with the defense. Youth could contribute to shooting with confidence, but IMO youth should never excuse poor free throw shooting.

On one hand, feels good to only be down 7 after how badly we looked in the first half... On the other hand, 7 points is a lot when you only scored 21.

Preston answered the bell at half. We definitely lose this game to any other MAC school. EMU is atrocious. Doesn’t look like free throw shooting can get fixed. 14-27 from the stripe is mind boggling.

"We have met the enemy and it is our free throw shooting."

Preston and Vander Plas especially needs to stroke it better since the ball is often in their hands. Of course we are not even in this game without their overall play. Good to battle back and get the win. Small step in growing up.

This game shouldn't have been as close as it was. We had four straight turnovers down the stretch that allowed EMU to get back in the game, and three of the turnovers weren't forced. Sloppy passing and ball handling.

This team needs to get confidence early in games. Not getting a FG until about 11 mins left in the first half really set the tone for the half. I think about a third of the first-half pts came in the last two mins. But then in the second half thinks started to fall and you could see the confidence level come up.

Now, we need to beat somebody besides EMU.

Take a win over these guys any way you can get it.

I know they've had some above the rim athletes, but I would rather have my gums scraped than be an EMU fan with Murphy coaching.

18 turnovers and 13 missed free throws. But it's a road win.

It's hard to keep the appropriate perspective on our team while watching all these games.
One always wants our boys to play well and get the W.
When we don't play well we need to understand what Jeff inherited this year.
A .500 season would be good in my book. Next year should be the 20 win season.

Isn't Murrell pretty solid when he's healthy?

As I rapidly approach a very late 60ish birthday my memory had become somewhat hazy. That said,I somewhat remember a Groce coached team that went scoreless for the 1st 12 minutes of the opening half. And was it at Eastern that Groce dispatched Bassett to the locker room and kept him there for the remainder of the game? EMU doesn’t exactly bring out the best in us for whatever reason.

Didn’t see or listen to this one but I have to agree with some other commenters. We are young and injury afflicted yet again, however not much excuse for not converting free throws. Clean that up and some of the other worts become somewhat less noticeable.

Truth be told we could have eked out 2 road victories this week even with all the issues Boals has to try to overcome.

Go Bobcats!

We were playing against a zone and played some zone ourselves. You don't exert yourself that much in those sets, and since no one was in foul trouble, it made sense to keep starters in most of the time.

Has Preston played with his back to the basket in other games as much as he did today? Vander Plas was above the 3pt line and Preston and Ogbonda were setting up in the paint. He had a couple of turnovers making "back" passes.

Shout out to Ogbonda on his game today

You'd like to have a player around the FT line to receive a pass against zone D. That person today was primarily Preston. Probably because Boals wanted him with the ball in that position to distribute the ball to open teammates or shoot his little floater. I don't recall that player being Preston in the first matchup last week in the Convo.

A Nuke Laloosh type box score

CC Cat - I only saw second half. Was Preston at top of key with back to basket in first half too? Thought it was weird to see that.

In the Sweet 16 season, we played at Toledo. I was there. I think that's the game we got out to a 15-0 lead but lost. I think that's the game Groce ejected Bassett. Then our next game was at EMU. I was there also. We didnt score until the 1030 mark of the first half. We lost the game. We didnt lose again until we faced North Carolina.

setting up more inside the foul line with back to basket. tried a few no look passed to perceived cutters for turnovers. also spun a few times and hit floaters. made the most of it but would rather someone with his vision be facing the bucket

I disagree with your reasoning because I think it's circular. We played the way we did today because it was EMU and their defense. It's not as if we would have played identical basketball against other MAC teams. I'm just glad we found a way to get out of there with a win.
