Foul shooting is horrific. The end of game play out of the timeout is was worse. How in the hell does BVP never touch the ball at the end?

Ugghhh.

Same thing at Buffalo. And this time a timeout to draw it up. Poor.

Shot selection and valuing possessions definitely lacking tonight. Plenty of heart and grit. Just need to be smarter with the ball. Would also be nice to have one guard who can play defense.

Someone please tell me we will win one of these! So many little things. Up 5 and Vest decides to go Superman or Turnover Man. Preston no penetration. Dartis looking old. BVP missing 18 free throws. I love OU hoops. Someone please send comforting words right now because I do not know if we will win again. I am numb now. Remind me we could be 4-4 or better in the MAC and how Groce's teams generally sucked in MAC. Remind me that Murrell would have helped or that Miles is playing better. How do we give up career night to McCarty? DAAAAAAAANNNGGG!

4 second half FG w/in 8 feet of the basket where he either pushed off with the off arm/shoulder or hooked with the off arm.

That is true but we are missing our own McCarty. Big Reg, Tone, Tillman, heck, Jon Smith would have taken it personal and hammered this thug. McMurray plays hard and is perfect to do that. What would Boals have done in the day!! Elbow back!!

Unless Dartis could have gotten open at about the 5-6 second mark I can’t help but wonder if getting the ball to state championship participant and winner Lunden McDay wouldn’t have been the best option. Not only has he been in big games but he is probably not who NIU expected to be the “go to guy”.

Against a good D team like NIU Dartis cannot get his shot off. I would have liked McDay!!!!!!!

Good call, coach!

Like another poster said, I love this team for its grit and never-say-die attitude, but it just can’t seem to get over the hump. Came close the last two games. I’m not giving up on them. As long as it’s clear they still believe in themselves, I’ll be believing in them and rooting for them. Go OHIO!

My thoughts are we have a very young team. They need to FIND the winning mentality.

SO??? Is this the result of the Division 3 rejects that Saul recruited???
Or Boal's coaching and recruits??

Or do we just need to tough it out till next year??

So far we are 2-0 vs EMU and 0-6 vs the top 10 seeds in the MAC. They are competitive in some of the losses.

We WERE picked to finish last in the MAC East. Maybe we should Quell our expectations for another season and see if improvements are being made?

Going into Ball State who sorely needs a win does not look good for this Bobcat team. Last in the east is probably accurate. Boals coaching on the floor is secondary to what magic he has to do on non game days to keep this team improving and moving forward.

Why does it feel like we have played so many good teams this year coming off a loss?

Because we have, I guess.

Looking at our conference record we have only come off of wins twice...so...

I've often been accused of oversimplifying things...but we just don't have the shooters. I said the same thing last year. This year we have Dartis, but he is 9 for 39 in the last 5 games from 3. I think we've got some good basketball players...good overall effort, good defense, ball movement, etc. We just have to knock more down.

I remain hopeful that our freshman guard trio of Roderick, Brown & McDay are better outside shooters than they have shown. I think all 3 will improve this season and into next. As it stands now, we have a roster of guys who mellow in the low 30s from 3 and don't do much better with mid-range jumpers.

Late in the game, we used the small ball lineup of Preston, Dartis, McDay, Roderick, and BVP with a little bit of Miles Brown to creep back into it. We played a full court zone press that ate a lot of shot clock against NIU's offense. While we don't have "squad" yet, we are still playing 10-deep, and I'm interested in seeing this defensive strategy in moments where we aren't playing catch-up.

That's the 6 that should be getting the bulk of the minutes from my POV. Everything is more fluid offensively with those lineups and adding to what you said, changed things up on defense.

The one thing I'll add to this for Roderick and Brown, is that it's a little harder to get into a good shooting rhythm when you play a few minutes, then sit, play a few, then sit. There have been a couple instances this season where Roderick comes in and knocks down a 3, then immediately gets sent to the bench. He's the future of this program and needs more time to show what he can truly do, IMO.

The toughness we have showed in these last 2 games is a step in the right direction. This was a factor that Boals discussed upon taking this job. Now we need to improve in the D overall where we have to confidence to get a stop when needed.
We currently have 2 offensive players, BVP & Preston. All the other guys have not shown any offensive consistency. We need a third scorer to move the program forward.
One other observation: Boals is starting to play more bench players which I believe is a good thing as we look toward next year.

Great game from McDay. I think our freshman have a lot of potential and will be much better next year. Tough when Brown and Roderick don’t play much in the non conference. Remember this is year one. We are much more competitive than last year and there have definitely been improvements.

I think this is a great point. As frustrating as it’s been with these close losses, I really feel like these would’ve been 17-20 point losses a year ago

You know, in his Senior Year Nick developed into an effective inside-the-arc shooter that turned him into a more complete player. I'd like to see Dartis do the same thing, although it might be too late for him to change.

Opponents coming off a loss. Off the top of my head: Ball St, Nova, Utah, Akron, Purdue.

You and a select few others seem to be the only ones still comparing to a year ago. Everything is different, which for me, not only makes it useless to speculate, but also nearly impossible to compare.

I know this - losing winnable games when they had a late lead has to stop at some point, regardless of the developmental phase we're in.

On a positive, I enjoyed the stretch of the game when Vander Plas, McDay, Dartis, Preston, and Roderick were all on the floor together.
