Just figured we'd start a new thread since it's so difficult to get injury info. Any update?

I wish we had more news. I am sure I am going to get roasted for this question but as a Bobcat fan to the millionth degree I have to ask, does anyone else feel like Arkley isn't giving us as much news and notes on this year's Bobcat team as he did in the past? I feel like he's half-a$&ing it so far this year and I only say this because I always felt like he had an intimate and often times unprofessional relationship with Saul. I wonder if he just doesn't like Boals or if Boals is less approachable than Saul? Either way, I feel like Arkley isn't doing the basketball team, which by the way is OVERACHIEVING, justice. I am putting this into this thread because by now, if it was under Saul and it was Gavin Block, Arkley would have written 3 stories, tweeted 10 times and talked about how Block's broken finger was the key to the season.

On Arkley- I am not a fan at all- he was embarrassing in his love for Saul and his approach during the last few seasons. BUT I will defend him on this issue of injuries by saying the Messenger has him covering every sport every where. There is no way he can get the access he needs when he's really a one man band. Also his love for Joe Burrow takes up any other free time he has...
In any case I do think this is an issue of having no professional media in town. it is sad.
There's a lot of questions around this team.. a few major ones?

1- Roderick injury
2- What is the timeline on Marvin Price? he was hurt- badly- and he's now rounding into shape- how far off is he?
3- What is up with Miles Brown? Injury? Suspension? Academics? I mean rumors everywhere and no word at all.
4- Murrell- same issue? hurt? Suspended? Academics? How much eligibility will he have left with his past?

On the last 2 if it is academics- then why do they travel? If its injury give at least a ballpark time line?

Arkley has so little insight to this team that on the day Roderick was cleared to play he tweeted that he didn't expect him to play much. And we all know what happened. Even Arkley recognized that with a follow up tweet.

I do subscribe to the Mess. Not sure why, but I do.

In the end I just wish we had a tiny bit more info and insight on this team- and on Ohio Basketball PR standpoint THEY SHOULD BE PUSHING the info out- they could control the narrative. Instead they don't (more and more pro teams have their own reporters etc.) and so we get rumors and innuendo and it also causes disinterest in the team.

That's a blow. You're probably a few weeks into MAC play before coming back is even possible. A medical redshirt is probably on the table.

I think a seven man rotation is playing on thin ice at any level of basketball beyond middle school. With two seemingly easy games coming up followed by more than a week before Purdue, I'd be encouraged if any of the following happens in the next two games.

1) Price gets extended playing time with some rope in case a mistake is made. Seems he has been yanked at the first mistake made recently.

2) Play Mason at the three. I think this would allow Springs some time as BVP's backup. Right now, that role has gone to Mason, but I don't know what Mason has done to earn more time than Nate.

3) Maybe Murrell or Brown returns soon???

This suggest you have something like a spiral fracture which is doubtful for return this season.

Well... A medical red shirt could make a lot of sense now. He can step right into Dartis' starting role next year. It didn't seem like he was going to take that many minutes from Preston, Dartis, and McDay anyway.

Ummm....."he can step right into Dartis role next year." Roderick was going to do that anyway...injury or no injury this year. And I guess you didn't watch the Myrtle Beach Invitational. Come MAC time...Roderick was probably looking at close to 20 minutes per game. The injury bug that has hit this program over the past five years boggles the mind.

This is a killer loss and a huge setback for the rest of the season. Price is going to have to step up. More minutes can't be given to McMurray. Everyone on this board knows this.

Maybe because people in Arkley’s coverage are interested in what is actually local sports news. Sometimes you people lose perspective on this issue. Arkley writes for a local paper and covers the local university for the local paper, he has a duty to cover local sports news and sell papers. Joe Burrow is local sports news and Joe Burrow is selling papers.

*gulp* I agree with you. I watched him in person at Myrtle Beach and came away thinking this kid is going to get some big minutes come MAC play. Smooth game, great looking shooter, I was really enjoying watching him play. Let's hope for a speedy return and maybe we won't have to redshirt.

SpongeBob and BTC beat me to it. While I don't live in Athens, I get the sense that, sports wise, he is the leading local story right now given the lackluster OU Football team, and the OU basketball team going through growing pains. (pun intended, though true also)

I'd bet that more people in Athens watch LSU games each week than watch Ohio games. It's what the people want.

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to hold Arkley responsible for the lack of information he has been getting regarding the Bobcat team. He mentioned early on when covering Coach Boals and the team that there wasn't as much "openness" to outsiders observing practices as in previous years. The first 10 minutes or so are open to the public and after that the remainder of practice is closed to outsiders. I don't blame Coach or Arkley for this. I want Coach Boals to coach this team in the way that he sees fit and makes it the most productive team possible. If that means keeping me or you or Arkley "in the dark" more than we have been in the past, so be it. I'll sacrifice my "inside scoop" for getting a winning team on the court.
As a local sports reporter Mr. Arkley is expected to cover local high school sports as well as our beloved Bobcats. I've never been ignored when sending Mr. Arkley a tweet or a question about any aspect of Bobcat athletics. I'm not willing to put all of the blame on him for the shortage of information coming from the Ohio athletic department at this time.

There are a lot of people showing ignorance in this thread. Fortunately, a few people have pointed it out, but just so we're clear:

1. Arkley's job firmly falls in the professional media category.
2. He works for a local newspaper, not the University.

I live in Akron where the hometown newspaper won multiple Pulitzers and used to have an unbelievable stable of writers. That's all gone now. Jason Arkley would run circles around the ABJ's sports staff. Guy works hard. Might be the only true "reporter" still covering a MAC program. I was uncomfortable with his apparent friendship with Saul, but his work is more than enough reason to invest in a digital subscription to the Mess.
