Trying to get back on topic again...Roderick has played 4 games so far. Couldn't he appear in about 12 total and still be able to get a redshirt? Wonder if we can get the best of both worlds and have him come back sometimes in February while also preserving 4 years of eligibility.

I don't know the rule, but 12 games seems way over the limit to preserve a redshirt. I doubt we see Ben the rest of the year...seems like a tricky injury to bounce back from quickly. Tough loss. Next man up...Marvin Price.

Not sure my comments totally fit here however yesterday’s Messenger clarifies the injury status of Roderick and Murrell but makes no mention of Miles Brown. Anybody know what is going on with him?

Boals is quoted in today's Post that Ben will be back "soon". The overall tone is optimistic, so that's encouraging.

Arkley tweeted that Miles Brown is progressing but not yet ready. Murrell sounds like there's a long way yet to go.

It's the perfect time in the schedule for Marvin to get more minutes and cement a spot in the rotation. I hope to see a lot of him tonight and Sunday.

Murrell supposedly a month away from practice. Price had short preseason prep time but apparently about to get more involved.

I want to say the rule is 30% of the teams games, but don't quote me on that. Fuzzy memory. Too many bong rips and beer suds.

I think you're close, I was thinking 1/3rd. So 10ish or only 6 more games. Probably not something that would happen. Perhaps a more likely scenario is he comes back and gives it a go and is injured again before he gets to 11 games and could then use the redshirt.

If Roderick is only out 4-6 weeks (typical for a broken finger), then you need to get him back. With the grad transfer rule (see Carter and Simmons), I'm not sure I'm worrying too much about redshirt years. Plus, the NCAA seems to be much more lenient in giving an extra year of eligibility if you've stayed with the same school throughout.

The rule for a medical redshirt is 30 percent (rounded up), but the rule also stipulates the player cannot compete after the midway point of the season and still be eligible.

30% is correct. You also can't play in the second half of the season. So if he plays at the end of the season he is not eligible no matter how many games you miss.

Edit: Oops, UpSan beat me to it.

I wonder if that differs from football for the "second half of the season" part. Gus Johnson was blowing smoke up some OSU player's butt on Saturday because he was a senior that was planning on redshirting, but was playing in the Michigan game.

Football has a special redshirt rule that allows players to play in four games at any point in the season. It is not related to a medical redshirt.

Gus was blowing straight facts. Simmons can redshirt provided he does not play in the BIG10 Championship or Playoffs/Bowl games.

Agreed with this line of thinking. This isn't a player I'd redshirt if it's only a month to heal.

There is the response I was looking to see. A guy like this that has great upside and looks like a steal for Ohio is a prime candidate to finish early and move on before his eligibility is up. Even the announcers on several games have been talking about academic advisors at mid majors being encouraged to slow academic progress of redshirts.
