Me thinks EMU's a not so good.

Look at who half of the wins are against.

They lead the nation in steals per game and play 10 guys more than 10 minutes a game. If I recall, Western wasn't supposed to be any good either.

While true, they got some of those lofty numbers against four non-D1 opponents.

Are they even doing lava cakes anymore? Don't think I've heard that at any games this season. Maybe lava cakes went the way as "Stand for Defense" and "Roar for 1804".

Nope....lava cakes are apparently no longer a part of the promo package from Domino's Pizza. I think that must have been the trade-off for getting working hand driers in the restrooms in The Convo.

Lots of new faces on this EMU team. You'll recall they had quite a few guys transfer out and they backfilled with JUCOs. Really surprised Rob Murphy survived after squandering the talent he had the last couple of years.

What can you credibly expect from the one of (if not THE) lowest-paid positions at arguably the toughest place to coach in the MAC? I think he does more with less than just about anyone in the league.

I might argue that NIU and CMU are tougher places to coach. Recruiting to CMU has to be the toughest place to recruit to in the MAC, right?

And doesn't EMU have some of the nicest facilities of anyone in the league? Maybe I read that wrong here on this site from some of our esteemed colleagues.

EMU's convo is a great building, but it's a depressing one when it has well under 500 people in it for a Saturday game. It's a commuter school a stone's throw from Michigan. They'll never, ever, ever draw anything more than flies. EMU also fields more varsity sports sports than Ohio, making budgets even tighter.

NIU and CMU are definitely tough for hoops (football first schools), but at least they have a reasonably sized (for the MAC) fan base and some engaged alumni. I've been to EMU for games and no one in town or on campus seems to know or care they're happening. And before anyone asks, yes, it's far worse than the apathy in Athens.

Did EMU draw fans when Ben Braun was the coach (early 1990s, I believe)? When they had future NBA players such as Earl Boykins and defeated Duke in the first round of the tourney? Anyone BA older fans remember?

Not sure about hoops, but I do remember a football game televised from EMU back around that same time that had what appeared to be a full house. I think this might have been a few years earlier, about 1987. It was a game that decided the MAC championship. Don't remember the opponent. Might have been the only full house before or after. It was an impressive site on TV!

Imagine putting OU in Grove City, establishing it decades after OSU, and leaving OU as an inferior academic institution in virtually every concentration to the Buckeyes. That's the life of Eastern Michigan.

My observations;

This team has 6 big bodies, 6'8' and above.
They only have 1 scorer in double figures.
They are good at getting steals.

Home court will need to help us gain a W.

I agree with the general thrust of these remarks, but I should point out that for the first few decades the institution that was to become the University of Michigan was kind of an itinerant school bouncing around from one location to another, not landing in Ann Arbor until 1841, with its first university-level graduating class was in 1845. EMU was founded in 1849.

They played in the 5,400-seat Bowen Field House back then, and I’m sure they had some decent crowds. Times have changed as we know all too well in Athens. They’re feeling all the stuff we are, but much more acutely. TV has changed things. The internet has changed things. Fan want “big time” or they don’t have the time.

Throw in some unique-to-EMU issues and it gets really grim. EMU is a commuter school – this is not a pejorative; it’s a fact (about 85% of students are commuters). It’s a short bike ride away from UM. Ypsi’s population and EMU’s enrollment are down from where they were in the 90s.

The 90s were a golden era for EMU and the whole MAC. They had a Sweet 16 run early in the decade and that 1995-1996 EMU team was stacked. Two future NBA players is Boykins and Dial and the leading scorer wasn’t even one of them. They made the Top 25 and beat a crappy Duke team in the first round before losing to UConn. That era will likely never come back for the MAC and will certainly not come back for EMU.

This isn't quite true as it was "Michigan State Normal School" back then - founded exclusively to train teachers. All three directional Michigans are former normal schools. In fact, the MAC is stuffed with former normal schools. I believe the only MAC members not founded as normal schools are Buffalo, Miami and Ohio. Thread drift trivia.
