Topic: Joe Burrow the roundballer?

First of all, here's wishing everyone on the site a very Happy New Year!

I've got a question. Well, it's actually a question my friend, who is a huge LSU fan, asked me pertaining to whether Joe Burrow had the ability to play basketball at a school such as the ones he attended, Ohio State and LSU.

I knew of Joe's football prowess, as I followed his high school exploits starting with his sophomore year at Athens High. My friend said he read where Joe also was all-state, as well as Mr. Basketball in Ohio, so he figured that he could have played hoops at LSU.

I wasn't aware Joe played basketball. So can some of you guys who know of his high school basketball career fill me in on what level of college hoops you and the recruiting gurus thought he could play on? Thanks.

I think I read recently were he started as a frosh at Athens High, something he didn't do in football (or maybe it was make varsity). Don't believe he was Mr. Basketball, though.

1st team all state - Division II - as a senior. Quite the feat.

Luke Kinnard was Mr. Basketball both his junior and senior year. Quite the HS stud. Most Div II players were MAC recruits. A few of the Div I went to larger schools.

Interesting, he shared the all-state honors that year with a Jordan Darts and Jason Carter from Johnstown-Monroe.

Basketball starter as Freshman

Frosh QB as Freshman. Germano’s youngest son started as the Varsity QB that year before moving to Fresno.

Not a BIG10 or SEC Basketball player.

He is obviously a stud athlete, however, the talent level in SE Ohio high schools probably couldn't be any weaker. All-Ohio voting is heavily weighted on stats.

He could probably have been a very solid MAC basketball player. Others thought he could have played in the A10.

I see the point you are both making. He was a stud quarterback who made an effort to showcase he was more than a product of his environment. Plenty of guys make All-Ohio in football from the SE District who are not as talented as those left off.

In basketball, Burrow was not better than Carter or Dartis. Maybe if he focused on basketball he could have been. He never played much if any outside of SE Ohio in basketball, because he knew what he was focusing on.

Put Burrow on Newark his senior year (granted, they also play a much tougher schedule), but Burrow is nowhere close to an All-State basketball player. He was first team all-state in basketball thanks in large part to killing some bad teams.

Donuts, did you ever see him play? He had way more interest early in high school from MAC and low level DI programs in basketball way before football. And he played all the AAU stuff all around the Midwest. His Junior year they absolutely dismantled Bishop Watterson, after losing a nail biter his sophomore season.

You guys are taking the comment about SE Ohio basketball incorrectly.

It’s a weak district compared to the rest of the state. That’s a fact. Athens having two All-State players, plus some role players who would he the star on many other teams, allowed for some serious stat padding.

Burrow was special mention All-State, not first team. Ibi Watson was already the best player on the team as a sophomore (going to Michigan/Dayton certainly doesn’t diminish Burrow too much).

Burrow would not be an All-State mention on other teams. He wouldn’t have the stats. It’s going to take more than him going off for 7 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists against a .500 Bishop Watterson to retroactively change my mind.

His respect as a football recruit had absolutely nothing to do with his high school stats. Because guess what? He and AHS were in a class of their own there too. Talent outshines wherever you are. No one saw him as anything more than a low D1 basketball recruit at best. Take away his name and he was a classic case of a really good high school player who had the size advantage over his opponent every night.

Yeah, I agree, kind of like Holden from Wheelersburg, probably only his size advantage made him all-state and the padding of his stats 👍🏽

I would think a guy who has followed high school sports long enough would be able to differentiate between a legitimate first-team All-State selection, and a Special Mention guy.

Once it gets to Special and Honorable Mention, it's pretty much as simple as picking guys with good stats from good teams. Take a few from each region and call it a day. Burrow 100% benefitted from that, and to think otherwise is crazy.

Joe Burrow was a legit D-1 basketball prospect when he was in high school. In fact, he had the ability to also be a D-1 prospect in baseball if he had decided to go in that direction. He is the third high school kid from southeastern Ohio that I had the opportunity to see up close & personal who were legit 3 sport D-1 prospects. The first was Rex Kern who played on a state championship basketball team at Lancaster in spite of losing to Athens when both teams were 15-1 mid season. Rex was also a D-1 infielder had he decided on baseball. The next 3 sport legit prospect was Art Schlicter from Miami Trace who was heavily recruited in all sports. Art would have been a very good D-1 point guard. He was recognized by all D-1 basketball programs in the midwest as a player.
Joey Burrow was seen and liked by a number of D-1 basketball staffs while playing high school ball, and during the AAU summer circuit. I talked to a number of coaching friends who were looking for info on whether or not Joe was going to pursue basketball, baseball, or choose football.
As all have seen now....Joe is the real deal.

The group he had at Athens his junior year was a real load. If Stewart's kid had stayed and not transferred up to Pick Central, along with Ibi the year after, that would have been a scary unit in D2 and probably would have been a great game with the Muskies and Unioto along the way.

If you want to continue to think that SE Ohio players in basketball don't benefit from a weak schedule, especially in D1 and D2, you are only fooling yourself.

You said yourself that he was a low D1, maybe mid D1 basketball player. That's how I viewed him too. What on earth is your argument? I guess it pains you to see for the Meigs and Wellston teams of the world to be looked down upon.

Historically, all-state basketball players from SE Ohio have inflated numbers and quotas that help them in the voting. The SE Ohio bump in accolades has been going on for decades.

Burrow was a talented basketball player, but his football exploits are inflating his skill a bit. He made the obvious right choice on sport.

I did read the wrong year, so my mistake on that. He was Special Mention as a junior.

Comparing the number of votes two players received with zero common opponents at the high school level is a waste of time though. So many of the voters just looked at box scores and rely on hearsay.

Watson doesn't transfer, and it would just be plug and play with Watson getting the top SE Ohio individual spot as long as he stays healthy.

Whatever will I do by stating Burrow wasn’t as good at basketball as a starter for Xavier and perhaps the all-time leader in three pointers in the MAC?

It’s laughable how even the slightest shade thrown at SE Ohio puts people into a fit. Again, for people struggling:

1. I think Burrow was a D1 player (which doubledribble confirmed, yet I was “owned”)
2. Burrow was not better than Dartis or Carter (hard to prove, but I’ll stand by that statement. As high school seniors, Dartis was better than Burrow. Carter probably was too, and definitely was when he was a senior).
3. SE Ohio kids make better All-Ohio teams than they deserve frequently. They get those votes because there are a ton of bad teams every year to beat up on.

I’m sorry I offended you with the SE Ohio basketball slander. Every other night it’s just a dog fight in the mighty TVC as Athens beats up on a bunch of tiny rural schools. Is there even one student taller than Burrow currently enrolled in half those schools?

I was talking with a late 60s/early 70s Gallia Academy grad at the library in Gallipolis on Friday about this very thing. She and I were both commenting on how much better the SEOAL was than the current situation where Athens and Gallia Academy both have stellar records beating up on teams often half their size in enrollment. If you ever get a chance to see the number of players who make all TVC it will make you chuckle. It's based on where you finish in the standings. In volleyball, the first place team gets 5 players on the team, second gets 4 and so on an so forth. Every team is assured of at least one player. How would you like to be the coach who has to decide which of his/her starters doesn't make first team on a league championship team?
