As for DJ, Leon, Tony, or Jerome, as well as Geno, or Snoopy, or anyone else I missed --- why are we debating adding the name/jersey of guys that were highest achievers to the rafters?

We're not talking about participation trophies here. We're talking about celebrating the best of the best over a 30+ year span -- 5-7 other names up there besides the 4-5 that are now -- roughly ten to fifteen names that were the highest achievers over the fifty years of Ohio Basketball played inside The Convo. That doesn't seem illogical to me.

I think there's some forgetfulness on how great DJ was for OHIO. He wasn't good, he wasn't just great, he was a once-in-a-lifetime type player for us. He played in 5 NCAA tournament games, averaging 17.8 points (including 19.5 in two games as a freshman!) over those five games.

He is the ONLY player in the history of NCAA basketball (not MAC basketball, but all NCAA players ever) to have 2000+ points, 900+ assists, 600+ rebounds, and 300+ steals. He excited crowds, filled up box scores, and won games. Hard to ask much more from your point guard.

When he finished his career he was 12th all-time in NCAA history with 934 assists. He was 18th all-time in NCAA history with 328 steals. To be among the top 18 of all-time in two separate categories is unfathomable.

I know you're not allowed to say anything other than that Gary Trent was the greatest ever Bobcat (or maybe someone from the Elite Eight team of the 1960s), but DJ Cooper has the most impressive Bobcat career of all time. To me, that is unquestionable. His number should be retired. His jersey should be retired. His lineage should be offered scholarships from here until eternity.

Honest to goodness...I couldn't have said it any better when it comes to the discussion of retiring DJ's number. This is a mic drop post from Kevin. Really good. I don't know how anyone could ever say #5 should not be retired.

There is no question that Snoopy and DJ belong in the rafters. The others there is some room for debate. I could go either way on them. I was able to watch those two live along with Dave and Gary. They belong. Now they need to start looking at our Women's teams as we have had some special players too. Please do not wait as long as they did for the first one. And what about the volleyball players and wrestlers. We need to honor all of our greats.

I think for basketball, on top of finishing a degree, the total package would mean at least two of the following bullet points:

-At least one MAC POTY recognition
-At least two MAC first team selections
-Get to the NCAA tournament
-The most arbitrary, but be a stat sheet stuffer for at least two seasons. That can mean be a 20+ ppg scorer, a walking double double like Brandon and Tony, or an all around player flirting with triple doubles like DJ and Jason P.

Man, reading this, I feel bad again that Tony broke his foot. I think we are headed to the dance and he repeats as POTY if that doesn't happen and he could walk into the rafters.

Agreed on the getting the folks in all sports who deserve those honors included sooner rather than later.

You make a strong argument here, Kevin. Though some other players in the past had some impressive stats for their time periods, I think your stats here show that DJ was certainly one of the best all-time and should have his jersey retire, now especially, since he graduated, which is a criteria, understandably, for many types of recognition at OHIO!

100% agree. And the thing is IMO his personal stats are not the most impressive part of it. 3 NCAA wins, 9-2 in the MAC tournament.

That's actually an interesting discussion. Maryland uses the jerseys as recruiting tools. They only retire a handful but honor a bunch. Steve Francis played there one year, "only" made a Sweet 16 and had his jersey honored. Maybe the way to go is to hang the retired jerseys in the middle and then the jersey's of all your HOFers from basketball and volleyball around the wall.

I think this is a great idea. Regardless, it makes a lot of sense to me to honor more than a handful of names within the arena when dozens of notable people are responsible for the success of all of the program's over the years.

I think this is a great idea. Regardless, it makes a lot of sense to me to honor more than a handful of names within the arena when dozens of notable people are responsible for the success of all of the program's over the years.
You and I already had this discussion offline, but it's silly that new students won't know who Brandon Hunter or Big Tilly are. Put their highlights in the intro videos alongside today's players. Hunter's play against UNC, Tillman's dunks against Maryland and Leon's tip against Buffalo should be played on repeat in the Convo.

I always like those intro videos that show some highlights of seasons past before blending with plays from the current year. How about also during breaks or in pregame, running a "This day in Ohio basketball history" video. There's got to be something significant in our history on every possible game date.

I like this idea as well. I see no reason why we can’t do this; we’ve got enough good clips of Bobcat highlights to make some interesting intro videos.

We need to include some Jerry Jackson and Don Hilt video's as well. Or Frank the Bomber Baumholtz leading the nation in hypothetical 3pt shooting.

He played in Men's Gym, now Bentley Hall. It was completely redone when Grover was opened and converted into a classroom building. BTW, Women's Gym was torn down, along with the original Boyd Hall and old Tupper Hall, when Alden Library was constructed.

Yes, I concur on including Baumholtz and some the 1964 Elite 8 team clips. I have seen a very brief clip, years ago, of Baumholtz's playing, so if it didn't disintegrate before they could copy it into the digital domain, it should be available and useable for such purposes.
