Been great to see how far the team has come from the game at Savage Hall.

Looking forward to going up against them with Preston this time.

I've been saying it for years and I'll say it again. No one wants to play Ohio in the MAC Tournament. No one.

Considering that we have not won it in 9 years that doesn't mean much.

Are you aware that if you say the same thing repeatedly regardless of context, it doesn't mean anything?

And Toledo is just fine seeing us in the semis.

My boy from Newark, JT Shumate, had his way inside v. Ohio in the first meeting in January. Hit 7 of 9 from the floor including about 18 dunks to go with 4 block shots.

Speaking of JT, his dad, the girls basketball coach at Newark, told me a week ago that he was interested in going to Ohio. He said he talked with Boals when JT entered the transfer portal but Ohio didn't show any interest.

Speaking of the dad, his Newark girls basketball team is playing in the DI state semi finals tonight. His team is the only sports program at Newark that is better than the boys basketball program. They made it to the state final 4 last year before COVID shut down everything. Interestingly, Coach Shumate will not be at tonight's game. He got 2 technicals in the regional semifinal game and has to sit the next two games, including Newark's regional title win and tonight's state semifinal. He can coach tomorrow night in the state title game if Newark wins tonight. One of his daughters is a sophomore and second leading scorer at Kent. His other daughter is one of the best seniors in Ohio and will be a freshman at W. Virginia next year. Hopefully, JT will be playing in the NIT this year for UT.

BSquared, curious how he got 2 T’s in a Regional Semi. I would call that somewhat out of character for him. That really stinks for him and his girls.

Got my tickets for tonight.Pretty much had to buy in multiples of 2. On-line fees are ridiculous. I saved $23 on 2 tickets by going to the box office. Worth the 15 minute drive. When we win tonight I'll buy for tomorrow.

He picked up his first T in the first quarter and picked up in his 2nd in the 4th quarter with Newark leading league rival Pick Central by 40. I've been told that Pick Central was playing dirty the whole game (probably thought that was their only chance) and Coach Shumate thought the refs weren't making calls to curtail their roughhousing. He has built a heckuva program and probably would have won the state last year with a shot for one this weekend.

Also of interest: he split the varsity team into 2 teams (A and B) for the tournament. His thinking was that if one group had to quarantine for COVID reasons he would have a backup group of girls to continue on. His B team played and won the first 2 or 3 games before the A team took over in later rounds. His freshmen and sophomores were good enough to win early which bodes well for the future.

He’s definitely built the best big school program in OHiO. Been very impressive. And the reason I asked is because I was pretty sure they won the first game in the Regionals by 40

Have they ever said how many tickets they are selling?

Didn't ask, but there seemed plenty to choose from when he showed me the arena map. I was the only person buying on site and I was there for about 15 minutes because of a computer glitch.

I've read about several Bobcat fans who will be up there today. Would be nice to get a small cheering section going.

Looking back at the previous meeting, we didn't necessarily play all that bad considering we were without JP. We scored 78 points which is pretty good (though to be fair a good chunk came under 4 minutes when it was already decided). We just couldn't stop fouling and Toledo shot over 60% from the field and made 12 threes. Sears had a breakout game too going for 20/8.

Should be way closer this time around, but we'll see.

Yesterday, I was excited to see Toledo go to overtime and possibly tire out the team for today's game. But I wonder if there's any actually proven benefit for the team with an easy first round game vs a difficult first round.

Similar to baseball playoffs. Want the first round of your opponent to go the full length, exhaust the bullpen. But, is there a noticeable difference in performance for team that played a 5 game LDS vs a team that finished in 3?

May be something to it. Toledo played a short bench yesterday, really only a seven-man rotation. The five starters put in 35-43 minutes and the two subs had 15 minutes each. If we run them they might tire out.
