WOW.
I listened to Akron, BG, Miami, and CMU feeds this week. I really like our guys. CMU was terrible.....calling out names but no teams..."muhammad to ...." At least the BG guy says something like "Turner brings the ball up for BG moving left to right" to give perspective.
Our guys are pretty good. Maybe I spend too much time in the gym or parks because "dropping dimes" and "dude is wet" is fairly understandable slang bandied about by the guys playing the game.
Watching games on TV I hear "throwing down", "rejects it with a spike" , "breaking ankles" and other broadcaster cliches (note I did not include the dorky "score the ball") so in the big scheme of things I think our guys are pretty tame compared to SEC, CUSA, ASun, most ESPN and now the CBS broadcasters.
Basketball has a lingo as does baseball "whiffs" "fans" "high and tight" given by broadcasters. Basketball comes more from the players it seems.
If you are put off by the use of the slang of the game I find that curious. I never took it as our guys trying to be cool....they are enlightened enough to understand the current jargon used in player circles and by their knowledge we are smarter fans. IMHO I like it.
I will say I found the traditional calls on the Miami broadcast, the Zips yelping, CMUs lack of detail all inferior. I do like David Eha at Balls as he is analytic and informative, not so sure about my friend Jeff weller and I sure miss Morrie Mannies a ton. TuneIn is on most nights with hoops here and I rarely get in the car without scanning local AM and FM looking for a HS game in addition to the TuneIn college feeds. We got a pretty good thing and I constantly say...the day Russ gets his break we are going to miss him.
On another note. We have some pretty spectacular OHIO grads in spots round the country. Brian Boesh is killing it up at Michigone
