Watching Kron v Balls on CBS Friday in the MAC. As noted in earlier CBS broadcasts the announcers are not top tier. All the favorite "things you hate to hear" ....the MAC Conference tourney redundancy along with the over the back call. At least the video is really good.

Balls hitting 3s has got to make JG cringe. He is such a game planner to run guys off the 3 line. Balls leading the whole game so far.

I loved how one of the CBSSN announcers mentioned how Groce must wake up every morning happy because he's always smiling. First of all, how do you know that during the pandemic and with Groce wearing a mask? And two, my vision of a pre-pandemic Groce is him with a growl on his face, teeth clenched and steam coming out of his ears. Not with a smile.

Also, and I know this goes against everything posited here on BA over the years, I have no trouble with over the back calls. If I have position, did my job of blocking out that my coaches have drilled in me over hundreds of practices, and the other player climbs over me to get the ball I better get the call. Call it whatever you want, I don't care about the semantics. Call it over the back, call it a push, whatever, but a call needs to be made.

Saw the Toledo-Buffalo game last night on ESPNU. A very good game and it was pretty well-reffed except for one sequence in the second half where a Buffalo player traveled, then was fouled and finally stepped on the baseline, with none of these being called. He finally turned the ball over.

If and only if there is contact. Too many people think the move itself is illegal.

Of course, there has to be contact where the player gains an advantage.

You know that and i know that but we've both sat in two many gyms and heard fans scream "over the back" when when one player out jumped another and there was absolutely no contact.

Seems many refs are not exactly “top tier” either Dr. Tom. I’ve heard quite a few refs over the years call “over the back” on many an occasion. It’s not just a MAC ref thing either. I’ve also heard more than a few ex-players turned analysts utter “he’s over the back that’s a foul” along the way as well.

Realistic expectations for Tuesday? Limited practice time and arguably playing the best team in the league after being off for 21 days.

ESPN now shows the game as being on ESPN3. I saw a tweet from Russ that the EMU game is scheduled to be on 3 or + as well.

CBS still says it's on CBSSN. Maybe it'll be on two networks?

I believe, The game was originally scheduled for cbssn before it was postponed. Maybe they never updated it? I see it on the cbssn web site, but not on my cable guide. I dunno.

Edit: Marty posted in another thread that’s the games will be on ESPN

I don't think we win by more than 20.

Fans making the wrong call on behalf of their team is not unique to "over the back" calls.

"He was hacked!" when he wasn't hacked.
"That's a charge!" when it was clearly a block.
"Travel!" When it clearly... well he totally travelled.

I didn't think they'd preempt the UEFA Champions League round of 16 game for us.

I'd just add, it's so much fun poking fun at the Roo's intentionally, knowing it will show up on their message board in hours. That's a sensitive bunch up there in northern Ohio. :)

Maybe they can do another bobblehead night with Lebron in Akron garb?
LeBron in Zips garb. What if when LeBron graduated ASVSM the NBA rules were that you had to play a year in college before declaring a hardship. #23 would have probably gone to O$U BUT for grins and giggles say he really wanted to put HIS TOWN on the map and became a Zip for one year.

How good would his supporting cast have been that year? Would anyone in the MAC given them competition that year? Would he have filled every gym in the MAC when visiting?

They would have won the MAC easily. No one could have touched them. It would have been a spectacle, though not necessarily good for the sport or league.

Would he have sold out every league gym? No way.

This is so odd to have these two weekday games be in the middle of the day. I get that this isn't going out on broadcast TV. But still, I would imagine both teams would prefer to have the game occur in the evening so their fans could watch the ESPN3 stream.

Only reason I can imagine to have it in the middle of the day is if Akron wants to drive down and back in the same day. Even if that's the case, why not play it at 6? They'd be home before midnight.

Since the MAC is going to get six teams in NCAA tourney this year, all these afternoon games are clearly to get the teams used to playing this time of day so they can be ready for those first round games. Don't say the MAC brain trust isn't on top things. This real strategic thinking.

Even more strange is that Ohio's last two games on the road at Kent and BG....night games at 7 PM. With all of these days games scheduled, how are those two on the road at night? Really seems like Ohio is getting the short end of the stick these last five games with opponents and start times.

But that is during a regular 2 game week. It is pretty obvious to me it is an accommodation of the added workload of 3 games in 5 days for many teams this week. And with no in-person fans, it isn't as preposterous of an idea. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the afternoon stream numbers are higher than the evening ones.

Arkley spoke with Boals for his latest article. Here’s a few excerpts.

https://suacbobcats.com/2021/02/22/bobcats-try-to-gear-up... /

Boals admitted not everyone will be available for the game Tuesday. And the Bobcats may not be complete for another week to 10 days.

“We still don’t have everyone. We won’t everyone (Tuesday), or even Thursday,” the coach said. “Maybe by Saturday.”

[quote] With Ohio trying to get its legs back, Boals is under no illusion about how sharp, or in rhythm, his team will be.

“I’m not naïve enough to think we’ll go out and play our best basketball,” the coach said. “It’ll be sloppy.”[/OUTER_QUOTE]

Vegasinsider shows the current spread is Ohio -1.5. Kind of surprised given the teams pause / uncertainty.
