Sheldon's shooting is horrible but Elliott and Conners are not much better. Sheldon is 3rd in rebounds, 2nd in assist and leads us in steals. And hustles more than anyone on the court.

You may not like him but to say he's not D-1 player shows what you know. Maybe he's your Wiz this year or will it be Evans?

B-C was a much more athletic team than what we have and I expected them to win after seeing them play UD.

I'm with you here, partially. Elliott's clearly not a shooter -- he doesn't take threes and very often passes up open looks. He averages a single take per game across his career.

Connors though is a 39% three point shooter on his career. With a high volume of takes. He's started slow, but should come around.

But more broadly, I think you're right that the Sheldon hate's gotten a little out of control. I think it's perfectly reasonable that folks were frustrated with him on the floor for 30+ minutes a game; but the idea he's just not a D1 player's definitely a stretch, and he's gonna be in the rotation. The questions is really about what role, and how many minutes he plays.

The reason Sheldon is 3rd in rebounds...2nd in assists and first in steals is because he's been playing 30+ minutes a game (until the BC game). Ask yourself this. If JJ Kelly played 30+ minutes per game....don't you think he would have similar numbers? In fact, I will argue that if Kelly played 30+ minutes he would have better numbers than Sheldon here. My point still stands....Sheldon had no business starting the season as Ohio's starting shooting guard. Zero.

You can say all these nice things about Sheldon, but his advanced stats are absolutely dreadful.

Keep in mind through 5 games he is averaging 30+ minutes per game.

PER (Player Efficiency Rating) is a measure of per/minute production that a player is graded on. The average is 15. Sheldon is at 6.2 and 4th from last on the team. The three players below him (Elliott, Burris and Fisher) have barely played.

TSP (True Shooting Percentage) measures how efficient a player is at all shooting (2s, 3s, FTs). Sheldon is 9th, ahead of the same three players. He was given these minutes because he's supposedly our best shooter.

TOV (Turnover Percentage) measures an estimate of turnovers per 100 plays. A Senior guard Sheldon is 11th on the team, just ahead of a true freshman JJ Kelly.

USG (Usage Percentage) measures a percentage of team plays used by a player while he is on the floor. Sheldon is 11th on the team. What does this tell us? Offensively, he's basically non-existent unless he shoots a three. He is the Bobcats version of the early Lebron-era Cavs's Eric Snow. It's like we're playing 4v5 on offense.

OWS (Offensive Win Shares) measures number of wins contributed by the player due to his offense. Sheldon is tied for last on the team with Elliott and Burris.

***Just so you don't think I'm cherry picking, his DWS (Defensive Win Shares) is first on the team, a mind blowing 0.1 win shares while everyone else is at an even 0.0. So even though he is getting steals and rebounds on the defensive end, they quite literally mean next to nothing.

His effective FG% per 40 minutes is 35.2. The average in college basketball is around 50%, give or take.

Simply, if he doesn't put the ball in the hole as he's been recruited and hyped up for, he's a role player at best. He should be subbed in for defensive purposes and or shooting situations. That's it.

My less-than-learned take on Sheldon's playing time. I get the strong impression that Jeff is like a coach that my daughter had in high school. He picked his favorites very early, based on some secret formula, and then it really didn't matter the rest of the season how well a player did in a game or in practice, thoe favorites got the bulk of the playing time, and other players who could have contributed significantly to the team's performance just had a lot of bench time. Jeff is not quite as extreme in this type of favortism as the aforementioned coach, but he tends in that direction.

[Alan Swank will know the coach whom of I speak.]

Literally every bench player's parent feels this way.

You can post all the computed stats you want. One non quantifiable stat I look at is hustle. Other than Pav showing hustle the rest leave a lot to be desired. Maybe I'm old school. And the reason a 6-footer averages almost 5 boards a game is scrappiness and hustle. Last, I suspect the reason Boals has given him so many minutes is that he works hard at both ends of the court.

My bad, I didn't realize you saw all the preseason practices. I was assuming Boals and the rest of the coaches came up with early season starters based on what transpired preseason.

While this is true, you don't know the situation to which I'm referring. It was above and beyond the normal situation that you refer to. I don't have time to give you the details now, but Alan can chime in if he wants to.

Umm….I have watched him play 99 career games. I think that is a big enough sample size to know what a guy can do and can’t do. Sheldon plays hard but he should not be a starter for a division-one basketball team. It’s not Sheldon’s fault. That’s on Boals for not having another option at the 2-guard spot to start the season. I think 99.9% of the people on this board would agree with this assessment.

Jeff must be reading my posts. Conners gets the start at 2-guard against George Mason.

He sure hasn't been listening to me. This is the third season I've been preaching this point.
