Two portal entries from yesterday that the staff is now following:

Yassin Hussein of Emory Riddle (D2). 6'9 230 lbs, 11ppg and 6rpg. Started at UT-Martin. Only 2 3PA's on the season so more of a true post.

https://erauathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/y...

Amar Kuljuhovic of North Dakota. 6'8 225 lbs, 11ppg and 7rpg. Only 16 total blocks for his career.

We’ve expressed interested in Findlay’s Will Aljancic. He’s a wing at 6’6. Makes you wonder how much turnover we might be anticipating.

He was one of the top ten rebounders in the nation at the junior college level before his North Dakota stint.

He's on the Vic Searls level, maybe a notch above.

Looks like Hussein had a game vs Jason Terry's kid and outscored him 22-1.

(And outrebounded him 15-4 which also proves very little on the D-1 level)

The level of who Embry-Riddle plays? He could be a walk-on in the MAC. Maybe.

I haven’t had a moment to really take a deep dive into any of these guys. I did notice with Hussein specifically, his minutes per game trended down. As did his production. Through first 11/12 games he was averaging closer to 16ppg and 8rpg.

That said, Searls, while he has his flaws, I think overall shows the talent gap between the MAC and D2 isn’t that wide. He held his own, so I wouldn’t mind another D2 big with a higher floor if it came down to it.

Staff following yesterday's transfer entry Kevin Coleman of Lock Haven (D2).

6'9, refers to himself as 2-way stretch forward on Twitter. Averaged 12ppg, 8rpg, and 2bpg.

Appears more athletic with more bounce + has some post up moves and attacks the basket.

Would be interested. Their roster lists him only at 205 lbs. I would have guessed bigger based on the film, like 230+.

Aaron Jacob and Amar Kuljuhovic are clearly the best two of the recently mentioned big guys. The rest would be #NOTanUpgrade and no need to settle for that.

I think you’re right, he’s probably bigger than 205 — looks the part. I’m also intrigued by Coleman.

Former Toledo guard and MAC Defensive POTY Tyler Cochran is back in the portal after not playing a single minute for Minnesota (he had preseason foot surgery). Would be interesting to see if he makes it back to the MAC.

We are heavy on guards and this guy is most likely headed for a high major just based on his production, but if we have a bunch of roster turnover I'd be interested in him. Strong guard who can finish at the rim (200 lbs).

Another guy probably headed for a bigger payday, but this is the kind of big Ohio needs. Led the MVC in blocks and rebounds. Had ten double-doubles, including 33/18 against UIC. Averaged a double-double in the MVC Tournament before they lost to Bradley in the Semis.

A few new recent portal adds staff his following.

Jake Wahlin of Utah. 6’10 put up 6.5ppg and 5rpg. These are usually the types we haven’t landed historically. He’s only a sophomore, but can clearly play at P5 level.

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/bio/_...

Collin Parker of Columbia College (D3). 6’8, put up some numbers - 23ppg, 10rpg, and 2bpg while shooting 46% from 3 on 199 attempts.

And suggests Boals and staff have doubts that the incoming freshman wings can contribute right away.

Yeah, Wahlin seems like the best of the folks I've seen mentioned here. His rate stats at Utah were strong, and he's skilled for his size.

Per 40 he put up 10.6pts/8.5 rebounds. He did it against better competition. And he seems mobile and has good hands. As FJ said, are unlikely to get him. But he'd be a much better addition than the 6'5 wing from Findlay that Boals will sign for some reason.

Although it's not 100% fool-proof, when a guy was buried on the bench behind other good players at a power conference program, a look at who also recruited him is always interesting. In Wahlin's case that was: BYU, Arizona St, New Mexico, San Diego St., etc

Things to consider before deciding he's "not good enough" to play in the MAC.

Also if a guy who was highly recruited and averaged 3 points per game in the SEC (which has 14 teams in the big dance) from being stuck on the bench behind big $$ transfers...he's probably light years better than a 13ppg game from Podunk Nazarene starter who would be lucky to be a walk-on in the SEC.

Thus as more teams are eliminated from the NCAA and NIT... that is when you will see a flood of qualified candidates hit the portal.

To me, far and away the most important thing to consider is what happened when they did play and how that projects to more minutes against (in this case) a lower level of competition.

I think folks here get a little too hung up on high school rankings when it comes to the portal. Wiz & Cornish were highly rated in high school, but their rate stats at Louisville & Maryland were much more predictive about what they actually are as basketball players than their high school rankings. High school rankings -- especially outside of the top 50 or 100 players in the country, are basically wild-ass guesses and are far less relevant than 100 minutes of playing time.

247 rated Wiz as 2-stars, thus he was viewed as a project all along.

And they were correct.

But there is no reason we can't get a decent big or two this time. He doesn't need to be Jaren Jackson since we seem to be guard-wing oriented on offense as long as he can rebound, play some defense, score now and then, make free throws.

He was 115th in the country on Rivals and 132nd in the country on 247. People here talk about how highly rated Ayden Evans is, and Wiz was more highly rated than Evans.
