We've gotta give former Ohio coach Saul Phillips an "assist" in our tournament run as Ben Vander Plas, Jason Preston and Lunden McDay were his recruits. That being said, we've got the right guy in coach Boals to take us back to being a MAC-title contender and beyond...

Though I'm happy that Boals is now our coach, I can't help but remember those on this board who said that Saul wasn't recruiting D1 talent. Maybe he recruited some duds, but these three are certainly way better than ever average D1 talent.

Funny you post this. I was just talking to someone. Saul's third season was a second consecutive 20-win season, finishing second in the conference despite losing Campbell. Well-regarded recruits coming in.

I don't think many people would have predicted what happened after.

As I recall the discussions at the time, McDay had committed to Saul but it wasn’t official (not signed). When Saul was not renewed, and Boals was named coach, there was an interim period when Jeff still had to encourage him to be a Bobcat.

WOW, Billy. I was hardly "worshiping" Saul, just stating facts. If Saul had stayed here, wouldn't McDay still have come? So I give both coaches credit.

Hats off to Saul! He is a classy guy. Boals and his staff, however, have this team peaking at the right time. They look tough and hungry. Go 'Cats!

You can all thank Saul all you want. When he left so did many of his recruits, either incoming freshman or others that transferred out.
Jeff had little time to fill the open slots and still had a winning record going into the MAC Tournament.

I still can't believe that Schaus paid Saul what he paid him, poor management decision.

Jeff is our guy and he continues to impress.

Yeah, yeah, I know, maybe easy to say now, but when Jeff was hired, the two players on the (then) current roster that I especially hated to see leave were Preston and Vander Plas. One could see Jason’s massive potential was starting to kick in. Ben’s development has taken off too. We knew less about adding Lunden at the time but obviously he’s been great too.

And give me a break. Saul had his contract and moved on. With seltellar DI results. He’s a great guy, he’s salt of the earth. Wife is a great motivational speaker. But please!

I have said it before on here and I am going to say it again. Saul Phillips is a nice man and probably a pretty good coach, things just didn't fall into place for him here. You can't sugarcoat it, he wasn't successful here. However, that doesn't mean he can't be somewhere else. Most of us have had periods in our life where jobs, relationships etc just didn't seem to work out, it wasn't meant to be or Providentially (as the nuns taught us) you were meant for something else. I wish Coach Phillips the best and much success, but I am sure glad we have Coach Boals. He has taken the program to another level----in two short years!

Never ceases to amaze me that some people just can’t enjoy the moment. We just won a MACC game and routed the field for 3 straight nights doing so. As I’ve posted many times before the Saul train left the station. Wish him the best he had some good moments here and left a couple of nice presents under the tree in JP and BVP. He recruited the likes of Carter, Taylor, Dartis, Block, and transfers Simmons and KK. In the end the marriage didn’t work and the divorce was final. Good grief move on.
