As I stated in a post back somewhere in this thread, I am glad Coach Boals and his family have this arrangement that seems to work for them and hopefully this arrangement will continue for a long time. My fear being if his family likes more cosmopolitan areas, they might be wooed to other places, and oh by the way, he could make many times more the salary he makes at our beloved Alma mater.
However, I want to stick up for Ohio Cat Fan and those who might feel slighted that the head coach lives in New Albany (night and day difference from Albany!) Just put yourselves in their shoes for a moment and imagine you are reading quotes like "Mayberry." It could be construed as being condescending. Do the same folks who poke fun at people in small towns, poke fun at people who live in urban areas? I hope we can understand why Ohio Cat Fan and others might feel the way they do.
I live in a town of 4,000. i grew up in a town of 3,500 where 30 percent of the people were Anabaptists and the land was flatter than Russ Eisenstein’s stomach and my telephone line was shared with my neighbor’s...IN NINETEEN NINETY.
I can call any damn town Mayberry I want because I am a lifelong Mayberrian.
Athens was a metropolis to me at age 18. So bleep off with your accusations. I make fun of EVERYBODY. Because we’re flawed, goofy little creatures and self-deprecation is one of humanity’s greatest gifts.
I wouldn’t live in a bougie suburb if someone put a gun to my head (believe me my wife has tried to convince me of Carmel, Indiana, for a while now...now it’s my turn to try to convince her to live off the grid at some point....) But I don’t begrudge anyone who does. Jeff Boals sn’t going to stay or leave Athens because ya’ll aren’t worldly enough. He might leave because someone backs a Brinks truck up to his driveway, but coaches who llived in Athens left for that, too.
Small town America is officially as thin skinned as its cities now.
Yay.
