I justified the cost by assuming that Ohio would play 5 games in the tournament, so the cost per game would be only about $6.00. In case that proves to be overly optimistic, all teams get a minimum of 2 games, so at worst it's $15.00 per game. The streaming is through FloHoops, which I haven't heard of but is supposed to have some additional content.

Bowling Green got the AQ bid, and is the only other MAC team to make the tournament. They will play Creighton in the first round. Buffalo head coach Felicia Leggett-Jack tweeted that Buffalo was #33, and is in the first back-up spot if another team can't go. Ohio and UB had identical conference records and both lost in the tournament semis, so the difference between making the WNIT and hoping for carrion was Ohio's narrow win in the only game played between the teams this season.

The MACs strength relative to the other top mid-majors is its depth and that's been particularly true or the Women's side lately more than the men. We are used to literally seeing about half the MAC in the WNIT. I was disappointed to see that in the reduced field that even Buffalo was left out but I think that being in the area of last team in/first team out is probably about right.

Some thoughts on Clemson:

Not surprisingly, they're a lot bigger than Ohio. A trio of players split time at center, so that when the 6'3" starter gets tuckered out, a 6'2" reserve spells her until it's time to bring in the 6'4" shotblocker. Combined, the centers provide about 10 points and 10 rebounds per game.

Whichever center is in the game is paired with a forward, either starter Amari Robinson, at 6'0", or 6'1" Nique Cherry off the bench. Between them, they're good for about 13 points and 10 rebounds per game. Robinson can shoot a little from three, Cherry cannot.

Most of the points scored by the Tigers come from their three starting guards. 5'10" senior Delicia Washington made the ACC 2nd team with 15.7 ppg/5.9 rpg. She is fast and athletic, but is not a 3-point threat. 5'10" Gabby Elliott made the All-Freshman team with 13.8/4.9. She has a similar game to Washington's, but is a better 3-point percentage shooter, although she doesn't shoot them often. The role of 3-point gunner belongs to 5'5" senior Kendall Spray, at 10.3 ppg. 85% of her field goal makes were threes, and she accounted for nearly half of the successful treys on this team. She is currently second of the NCAA active career 3-point list, with 358.

Injury may be a concern for the Tigers, as Elliott missed the second half of their last game with an injury. That was two weeks ago, however.

After a promising start, Clemson lost all six of its games in February, and did not break 70 points in any of them. They ended up 5-12 in conference play, then beat Notre Dame in the first round of the tournament. Georgia Tech knocked the Tigers out in the quarters. Ohio beat Notre Dame earlier this season, and the Irish are the only opponent the two teams had in common.

FYI I started the flohoops registration process including putting in my email address, then decided not to do it and closed my browser. Tonight I received an email offering 20% off registration, so if you want to try and save $6 you could try that.

Well, I went ahead and paid the $30 monthly fee. I'm hoping that the 'Cats advance and that, therefore, my per game price decreases. Also, this payment helps insure domestic tranquillity as my wife who has always been an OHIO men's basketball fan has become almost a groupie of the women's team.

Watching the Delaware-Fordham game, I'd say that these webcasts are not exactly high quality either in terms of camera work or commentary. So far, I haven't seen one replay. Looks to be a real budget-cast to me. But, it's the only game in town.

Former Bobcat broadcaster Jake Hromada is doing PxP of the first game of the Charlotte Region on Flohoops. I wonder if they'll let him do the Ohio game, coming up next.

Good to hear Jake on the OHIO-Clemson broadcast. Strong start (13-3) but Clemson has crawled back into it and is up 4 in the second quarter.

40-37 Clemson halfway through the third. Too many turnovers, and not shooting very well either.

65-60 Clemson win. Clemson big hit an "uncalled" bank shot from free throw line to put Tigers up 1, on ensuing possession Washington steals ball from Hooks, foul from Kroll is not called at half court and Washington is then fouled at hoop, Bolden gets t'd up for Kroll foul not called. Clemson hits all 4 free throws.

Erica shot very poorly, and kept launching threes in fourth to no avail. Clemson turned the ball over again and again in last few minutes but we could not get a bigger lead than 1.

Still at least one more game to play for the Cats the way this tourney is set up.

No one could hit a three all day, and their star Washington made a star play to strip Cece when it meant the game. Mace still looks like a freshman at times, but she made some big plays to bring them back today.

Bobcats play Fordham tomorrow in the consolation game.

The box score on Ohio’s web site says no technicals on either team. Arkley said in a tweet that they called a flagrant on the foul after the steal?

But wouldn't that be two free throws and the ball? They shot 4 free throws and got the ball, two different players shot the free throws. And I'm pretty sure I saw the ref signal a T to the scorers table. Jake definitely described it as a T on Bob. Have to say I was surprised he would make that mistake as there could have still been a chance at a shot for the tie.

I didn’t see it, I was just going off Arkley tweet. You’re probably right. The tech makes more sense for the 4 ft.

Edit: the Clemson web site has play by play. It shows a team technical but then also lists no technical on either team on the box score. So who knows

Very disappointing loss. Just a few wide open threes drop from Erica and we win. Mace is going to be great. I think as a freshman she really looked better than any freshman I can remember . . . since maybe Johnson! ;-)

How does a team get a technical? I think it was on Bob. Don't know for sure.

The box score on the Ohio website has Ohio with: "Technical Fouls: Coach 4th 0:05." The play by play lists "foul indirect technical" at 0:05 of the 4th quarter.

According to the NCAA Women's Basketball 2019-20 and 2020-21 Rules Book:

"Section 12. Technical Fouls
Art. 1. A technical foul is a non-contact foul of a behavioral nature committed by a player or bench personnel, such as misconduct, which is a behavior or an act that is unbecoming to a fair, ethical and honorable individual....

a. A direct technical foul refers to a technical foul assessed to a head coach
for their own behaviors.
b. An indirect technical foul referes (sic) to a technical foul assesssed (sic) to a head coach for the actions of bench personnel only."

So it sounds like the foul was committed by someone on the bench such as an assistant coach, rather than by the head coach personally.

Thanks, Joe, for researching and checking out the details. That makes more sense than a “team technical.”

As I recall, when Hooks, Johnson, Burris, and Bambule were incoming freshmen, Bob Boldon started them as a group in the pre-season exhibition game and played them almost exclusively. He explained that he knew what his returning players could do, but wanted to get a look at his newcomers. Might he take a similar approach to the consolation game with Fordham?. The tournament and season are essentially over for the Bobcats, so why not give the less experienced players time on the court? Jasmine and Kendall Hale, Abby Garnett, Madi Mace, Kate Dennis and Alexandra Antonova could be the basis for a future rotation. Perhaps we'll get an extended look at them tomorrow at 11:00 A.M.

39-26 Ohio at the half. The usual starters, but everyone on the bench has played, except for Bambule, who didn't play yesterday either. 3-point shooting still isn't good for the Bobcats, but Johnson has hit 2-6 from deep.
