Yep, played against Shaun Stonerook and Steve Esterkamp back in the day at Ping but it was just them hanging out cause they were part of the group. Not organized hoops stuff.

Pretty sure you can not make that guarantee. Maybe you could provide us with day to day usage schedules and an idea of how many times teams of all types have to rearrange and give way to other teams and Convocation Center events like graduation that shut the floor down for a week. It would be interesting to know how your idea of "fair share" is compared to that of a recruit on a campus tour who wants to know when he can get shots up and work on his individual game. When he/she is taking visits and comparing schools with the intent of finding a place they can hone their game it becomes an issue that is bigger to them than "you'll have access when it's open" To that motivated and slightly obsessed (the kind of gym rat you want a whole team of) kid Ohio just got a no vote.

Sorry I'll side with the general student population here. The courts at ping are for the student body. That's bullshit if you can't go play hoops at the facility you pay for because the team is monopolizing the court.
"Monopolizing"? I would guess they would only need it now and then. Your comment seems to mean the athletes aren't really students. Maybe you're right and they should be paid employees.

How in the world did we win the MAC this year and a game in the NCAA without a practice facility? Also, this "gym rat" player you so desire should maybe spend a little time at the library. I forgot! We now have the Sook Center. The kids don't need to mix it up with the other students. Keep them sequestered.

Agree that athletes should be serious students, too. But I don't see that as mutually exclusive with being a gym rat. Just means that that student would not have much time for anything else.

We are also facing a Higher Ed financial crisis which was already in place before Covid-19 arrived. We have a somewhat hostile faculty (to put it mildly) that doesn't care about our athletic prowess. Many of them are one budget cut away from being an adjunct, and wondering how they are going to pay off their student loans when by and large many of them have unmarketable majors for real world employment.

Can't we just concentrate on retaining Coach Boals and his staff and using the money associated with these elaborate ideas to keep in place what we already have? This isn't football where you have some 120+ Division I programs, college basketball has 300+ programs and we have the best the MAC has to offer. It just seems like a bridge too far for me. Unless a Bill Gates type donor steps up, let's just successfully manage what we already have.

A practice gym can't be that big of a deal for a MAC school. And in the MAC, the coach is the largest factor in how a program does. Nate Oats didn't win big at Buffalo because of his practice gym; he won because he is a good coach.

Every spare dollar should go into a raise for Boals.
