JP hasn't been included in any mock drafts I have seen recently (ESPN, CBS sports, etc.). Seems to me that the best move would be to return and continue raising his draft stock. Thoughts? How do others feel about his lack of inclusion in the mock drafts and the likelihood that he returns to Athens?

He hasn't declared to enter the draft. He's coming back.

I think the NCAA tournament and level of talent we played against illustrated well where Preston needs to improve. After seeing him struggle to get to his spots and deal with mobile bigs on the pick and roll, it was clear to me he wasn't at risk of being drafted this year.

Unlike some who have come through Ohio and elsewhere over the years, he seems to have a really good handle on who he is, where he wants to be in life and what he needs to do to get there. A good, level-headed guy; a TJ Carrie type. It's a real pleasure having him at Ohio.

Plus he seems to really like BVP and if you watch his freshman year he connected with Jason Carter a ton that year. You put this lineup out there each night and I am sure he will have a lot of fun with it.

PG: Preston with Sears off bench
SG: McDay with Brown off bench
SF: Roderick with Carter off bench
PF: BVP with Ezuma/Granger off the bench
C: Wilson with Ezuma/Granger off the bench

That also leaves us with some great building blocks to work on with Clayton, Towns and White (who I think is going to make a huge jump and compete for time at 2-3).

Bingo. JP couldn't shake UVA and Creighton double-teams 35 feet away from the basket. We really got the best of both worlds this year. A big time NCAA win and the return of JP. Go have a year next season JP and go in round one of the NBA Draft in 2022.

Pretty good first 10 I would say....depth.

Wasn't Carter starting at the 4 at Xavier for a lot of the season? Feel like he's likely to get the minutes behind BVP too, as a sort of combo 3/4.

It'll be nice having some deep depth. Won't have to worry so much about a couple guys getting in foul trouble.

Agree. And Sears and Preston will play together as well

PG: Preston with Sears off bench
SG: McDay with Sears and Brown off bench
SF: Roderick with Carter off bench
PF: BVP with Carter and Ezuma/Granger off the bench
C: Wilson with Ezuma/Granger off the bench

Perhaps...
Preston: 30+ minutes
McDay and Sears: 20 - 25 each
Brown: Remainder (With some of White's shooting sprinkled in)

Roderick: 20 - 25
Carter and BVP: 25-30 minutes
Wilson: 20 - 25
Ezuma/Granger: Remainder

If we're thread drifting and talking about the lineups + the distribution of minutes, I'll offer this:

Any lineup that doesn't include Sears and Preston averaging 30 or more minutes...well, I don't agree with it. And that would include the coaching staff making that choice. Simply put, they are two of the five best and most important players on the team, and they both need to play a lot of minutes.

I think the best lineup on this team next year might not include two guys that have played a lot for this team. In my mind, unless the opponent has a really physical five man, the best group on this team might be:

Sears, Preston, Roderick, Vander Plas, Carter.

That's not throwing stones at Wilson, McDay, Brown, or anyone else whose game elevates over the summer. I just think those five are the best five, and most versatile. (And we know we'll see someone's game jump forward over the summer, we just don't know who.)

I think that with Sears's ball handling and passing abilities make him a true point guard and Preston has the scoring and shooting skills to play off the ball. We'll see three of Sears, Preston, McDay, & Roderick on the court at once. I also think that we'll see all three of BVP, Carter, and Wilson sometimes on the floor at once. Seven guys are going to get most of the minutes.

Totally agree with this statement....and very happy to say as I listened to Indy radio today they announced TJ would be back. Very complimentary of him and his contributions.

A first round draft pick shows more than he did in the Tourney. The spotlight was on him and he didn’t deliver. If he did he would be gone. He has another year to prove himself.

I definitely hope that Jason comes back to Ohio for his senior year.

But one option no one is talking about: he could enter the transfer portal and move to a high major.

Hope he returns to Ohio.

I think a lot of that will depend on the matchup. I have a hard time not including Wilson in our top 5. He was an absolute beast last year at times and gives us something defensively that no one else on the roster gives us. There's also a reason that McDay gets the third most minutes on the team and draws the other teams best player on the defensive end. And let's be honest, we don't know what we are getting in Jason Carter. Are we getting the potential 1st team All-MAC guy that left here two years ago or are we getting the guy that struggled with legs issues last year?

I guess it's possible, but I'd be surprised if a 2-year starter in the Big East transfers to a MAC school to come off the bench. Like I've said before, it's a nice problem for a team/coach to have.

I saw how much trouble he had against creighton. He obviously needs to get his butt in the weight room working hard. If he wishes to succeed in the NBA he'll need to add about 100 to his bench and 100 on his squat plus about 20-30 lb of muscle

Fair points here. I guess I'm assuming we're getting a healthy Carter, which is what led to my post. While I can't disagree with including Wilson in that best five, and he probably is one of the best five, I'm not sure he's the most versatile. My reason for that five is that Sears and Preston create matchup problems, Roderick is probably the best perimeter shooter, and BVP and Carter create matchup issues by being able to step outside the arch and play off the dribble. All five can knock down three's.

That said, they won't always be the best five based on the respective opponent, I agree. And I agree with you on McDay and his value. His value on defense can't be underestimated.

All this said, these are great problems and conversations to have. The 10th guy on Ohio's roster right now would probably be earning quality minutes on teams in the bottom two-thirds of the MAC this year.

And all this conversation leaves out the potential jumps from guys like Towns, Brown, and Granger, along with the fact that both freshmen could push for playing time.

Fun times!

Good ole Mister Wilson gave us 15 and 8, and his attitude was amazing. Third team all MAC. No way he doesn't start and give us a lot of minutes. As others have said, which players are on the floor at particular times will depend on matchups, foul situations, etc.

Exactly. We've come a long way from Nate Springs getting important minutes at times.
