What a night for Jeff Boals. In a span of three hours, he gets a commitment from one of the best players in the state of Georgia who is going to even draw more big time attention his senior year in HS.

And then his star point guard goes number 33 in the NBA draft.

I would say business is booming in A-Town.

Does anyone know where Boals and Jay were for the draft last night? From the pics I saw it looked like an upscale draft party of some kind.

I think it might have been his agent's office. It was ROC Nation Sports.

They posted a fun video of him as he was being drafted as well.

We all know the answer, but the world sees Boals as JP's coach. And who's to say Jeff didn't do a great job helping him maximize his impact on the floor?

Similar to what Larry Hunter did for Dave Jamerson (not his recruit).

Didn't you mean "similar to what Danny Nee did for Jim Zalenka"?

Zalenka had pro potential to be sure. But perhaps teams were spooked by the Luke Witte washout.

A week ago Tuesday - July 22 - I was in Columbus airport, waiting to board my flight to Atlanta. I saw a chap approaching and stood to greet him. I teased him thusly: You are wearing a mask, but your height, OHIO Basketball t-shirt and hair style tells me you are Jeff Boals.

He smiled and we shook hands. He then introduced me to his son who also was wearing an OHIO Basketball t-shirt.

Jeff asked me why I was heading to Atlanta. I pointed to my daughter - Andrea, Ohio '94 - and said we would be visiting family in Douglasville.

Jeff replied thusly: "I'm going to Augusta to do some recruiting."

I always had the confidence in Boals, but nobody could have imagined all of this in 30 months. Can't wait for November to get here.

I simply didn’t know. I wasn’t implying anything.

Not to mention, if Saul stayed, you'd still have Kirk playing the majority of the minutes.

Best crow I've ever eaten. And it's delish.

But seriously, I have talked about it before, and now is the time to invest to make sure we keep him. With that, getting 8 seats for the season in the lower bowl and making sure that bad puppy is filled.

Maybe until he wins another NCAA tourney game, maybe longer. We’ve just got to enjoy the ride because if his teams keep winning, it’s not likely to last with the money that’s being thrown out there for big program coaches.

Case in point: Nate Oats had just signed a new contract at Buffalo for $837,000 in 2019 when Alabama signed him for $2,460,000, now he’s making $3,230,000.

Fascinating question. I think the fact that he played for Ohio looms large in this decision. Also, doesn't his mother, I do believe, live only an hour away?

I'd like to think that coach Boals is gonna be one of those rare coaches to break the mold and see how far he can take his alma mater. This assumes he'll be able to take recruiting to even a higher level. Sooo, if he can get the ballers, why not try to win here? I mean an NCAA championship, or at least see how close he can get. That's IF he can recruit the horses.

This has been the Catch-22 for mid majors since the beginning of time. Just when a coach is starting to build some big, he bolts. We'll never know what the DJ Cooper-led team would have done if John Groce had returned. If he had, all the players were back from the team that took North Carolina into OT in the Sweet 16 AND Caris LeVert, the MVP of the Ohio High School tournament, would have been our only recruit added to the mix.

I wish we had an opportunity to see what would have happened. I'll say this: I do believe coach Boals' age works in our advantage. He's young enough to hedge his bet, meaning theoretically he can take a few years to see how far he can go here, then still have the opportunity to move to a Power 5 school. In fact, the more he wins here, the more desirable he would become.

I wonder if we should start with a MAC regular season championship and work our way up to national championship? Maybe try to duplicate our NCAA tournament run with a team that didn't completely luck into an NBA talent who somehow the rest of college basketball missed?

Think we may just be a smidge ahead of ourselves here.
