Count me among those who isn't crazy about a Pavs-EE-Hadaway-Simmons-Breath lineup. To me, Hadaway is just much better suited as a stretch 4. Does he create the same mismatches from the 3 spot? Can he consistently stretch the floor with his shooting, as a 3 man should? Do we struggle getting to the rim cleanly without Hadaway (and Clayton) pulling opposing bigs away from the basket?

This is all just a very long winded way of saying I think we need to recognize how big of a loss AJB is and how it does indeed leave a very large hole on this team on the wing.
Spot on.

If that's our starting 5 next year, we're in for a 5th/6th place finish and first round exit in Cleveland again.

Everyone knows my opinion of Pavs at PG. Should be Elliott.

Elliott at SG is square peg in round hole. Dude is NOT a 3pt shooter. He's a slasher/creator who rebounds bigger than his size. Not the end of the world, but a terrible pairing with a PG who can't shoot the 3 either.

Hadaway at SF is square peg in round role #2. He ain't a 3. He's a 4. He neither shoots the 3 well enough nor can space the floor and take his man off the dribble. Oh and good luck if you press us and he's our 3rd ball handler. Then there's defense. Hadaway is a GREAT defensive PF. He just doesn't have the lateral foot speed to guard MAC SF's which are almost universally defacto 3rd guards. He's going to get roasted.

Simmons at the 4 is fantastic on offense. He will score. He will rebound. He will draw fouls. He's a lefty. Love it. But he's gonna struggle with spacing and doubles with absolutely NOBODY on the court to stretch the D. We better hope he becomes Gary Trent overnight and figures out how to score 25 a night even while being constantly doubled. Then there's his defense - which is nothing to write home about. Combined with Hadaway out of position and Pavs, it's a recipe for another terrible defensive team.

I guess Breath is penciled in as our starting center. He's fine. Nothing special. Gets rebounds and plays defense - that's a good start, and I'll take it. He's our Jon Smith/Sylvester Ogbonda.

Elliott was second on the team among the regular rotation in three point percentage. It wasn't a huge volume but there's no evidence to say he is "NOT" a three point shooter. It's like if someone has a reputation of being a penetrator or defender we make the assumption jump shooting is not a strength.

He was much better on the offensive end the second half of the season. But as good as he is at making contested mid-range jumpers in the lane (because he can't shoot 3s or get to the hoop and finish) - you're relying on your "go to guy" to score at the absolute worst statistical option in basketball. And he's still literally terrible at defense.

If he's our #1 option next year, we will fail, and it probably should cost Boals his job.

Next year is play on Saturday in Cleveland or bust.
Here we go again. So, none of the other recruiting mishaps should have costed Boals his job, but Pavs being the returning leading scorer should? Got it.

Good thing nobody is taking your advice on player scouting.
Pav shot 51% from the floor. 32% from 3 and averaged almost a steal a game. His shooting % is 2nd best on the team behind Searls, while Pav had double the attempts Searls has. The worst statistical shot in basketball? Seems like a pretty good shot when he's hitting it at over 50%.

Respectfully man, you haven't really shown yourself to be all that capable of analyzing Pavs' game in an unbiased way. It seems an awful lot like you've dug your heels in and are looking for ways to justify your opinion from the early part of the season despite a whole bunch of evidence to the contrary.

Pavs shot 67% at the rim -- 73 for 109. He only took 46 mid-range shots all season. His shot chart shows 65.5% of shots in the paint, 15% from mid-range, and the rest from three. He took a higher percentage of his shots at the rim than anybody on the team (outside of Searls and Elliott). And if you filter those numbers for the second half of the season, they're even more stark. He adapted with after struggling from three, took 67% of his shots in the paint -- and finished well there. It's basically where all of his points came from.

Meanwhile, Elliot -- who you want to start over Pavs because he's a creator and slasher -- didn't finish at the rim well at all. He shot way worse than Pavs (50%) and only 33% in the key. His assist rate was only 14% (compared to Pavs 27%).

I get the critiques of Pavs' defense. Everything else you have to say doesn't seem to stand up to much scrutiny, and if Pavs improves back to his career rate from three he's an elite offensive PG.

Is there only one basketball orthodoxy? Wasn't there a Sampson and Olajuwon on the court at the same time so who then was the four and who was the five?

Why can't OHIO have a main lineup of a one, a two , two fours and a five? Yes, a press might make not having a guard type at three a little difficult when the opponent goes small ball. But in a half court offense that lineup should be a real headache to MAC teams to defend. We saw how teams posted up our guards that were forced to guard bigger guys and now we will be beneficiaries of that next season. It all comes down to defense and the boards. Can Hadaway guard a lengthy wing? If not then Hadaway will be losing minutes at the four because Simmons is clearly a superior player based on past results and a true three will need to step up before January rolls around. My bet is Hadaway will be just fine guarding the opponent three and be part of a highly efficient offense that relies less on the three ball than teams of the recent past. Hadaway should pick a spot beyond the arc and practice his azz off to occasionally slip out to it and sting the defense with big rebounders to bring down some of the misses.

No no, focus on my last sentence. I've stated that I think we should judge coaches based on their performance in March, and that we should be making it to the conference finals on average once every 5 years.

In his last 4 years in Cleveland, Boals is 3-4 with 0 finals appearances.

Next year is put up or shut up time IMO. Oh sure, because we're financially strapped and he did win an NCAA game he might get extra leeway for a season or two, but at that point it's not just make it to Saturday - it's NCAA or bust.

In relataion to Pavs, my only point was if he's our #1 option next year, I think our chances of making it to Saturday are small. Thus possibly costing Boals his job.

If we make it to Saturday and Pavs is our #1 or the 13th guy on the bench, Boals will be fine.

Well, I mean, yea because your last sentence has been the focal point of your previous three posts -- Pavs is the main issue with the current roster construction and if the number 1 scoring option, we're screwed next year and Boals should be fired.

Meanwhile and leading up to the end of the season, you defended the current roster construction in the likes of Evans specifically, as if the continuity of the lack of performing bigs wasn't enough for Boals to get fired. In fact, you really dug your heels in that Boals could essentially do no wrong and his current strategy was a byproduct of current CBB environment. We just added two portal bigs ICYMI.

But because now your favorite whipping boy (despite BLSS debunking your false statistical claims of his offensive game) might lead us in scoring scoring, THIS is the straw that breaks the camels back for you to think Boals should be canned.

As for Pavs himself, I'd ask how short your memory was as it relates to the final game of the season. But I'm guessing Pavs nearly single-handedly willing us to a win over Toledo had you punching the air somewhere.

There was no AJB, a broken down AJC, and a less than 100% Hadaway in that game. Yet, Pavs put up 28 points and had us in the lead going into the final seconds of regulation.

Is Pavs being the number 1 option actually a problem? Or does it become a problem when he's the only option scoring? I think you can figure that out.

IMHO, Pavs is one of the better PGs we've had at OHIO in recent memory. What was the name of that guard that Saul had whose father thought he was "NBA material" and who was a very accomplished turnover machine? I'm drawing a blank on his name, but Graff's descriptions of Pavs would be more fitting for this past dude than the current dude.

+1

I mean the PAVS hate I just don't get. What more did people want out of him this past season? Leading scorer and second-team All-MAC. We all would have signed up for that immediately when Boals signed him in April 2024. Boals can be criticized for things, but PAVS ain't nowhere near the list.

Criticizing Boals for offering Ben Nicol a full scholarship, who turned out to be D2 talent, when we desperately needed him to contribute this past season, with all the injuries is another story....that is an all-time horrible miss.

Bowling Green’s Trey Thomas has entered the transfer portal, as a grad transfer.

Didn't that guy have a broken leg not long ago?

I would welcome Elmore back knowing that he'd be a 10 to 15 minute glue guy whose sole job is to rough up the opposition and not worry about fadeaway 20 footers. Seriously, he makes plays when he's on the floor. While he isn't as athletically gifted as AJ Brown, he does impact the game in a more well-rounded way than AJB does/did.

If we are at a point next season where we could still benefit from 8-10 minutes from Elmore, a bunch of folks here (myself included) will be very disappointed.
