Hard to sugarcoat how we could not get points inside 5 feet tonight. I’m sure the guys on the team would agree that we did not absorb contact very well at all. We couldn’t finish at the rim…period. And yes…I’ve watched both Ohio/Toledo games and they have made us look soft at the rim in each game.

Impressive win by Toledo tonight. But wake me up when they can do it when it matters - in the MAC Tournament. They can't. They've been falling apart in the MAC Tournament for over 40 years now, while Ohio excels better than any school in the conference in it. Remember last year when Toledo smacked Ohio in the regular season matchup? Anyone need a refresher what happened when they met several weeks later in Cleveland when it really mattered? I think not. Toledo's long been a program that has looked good over the long haul, but falters when it matters most.

I dunno I could be and hope I am wrong but I just don't get the feeling this team is going to go on one of those magical March runs.

We don't have that dynamic electric scorer who can take a game over against elite competition. We don't shoot the ball all that well ESPECIALLY from 3 (an equalizer against better teams) and we have zero depth for 3 games in 3 days.

Admittedly this team is good. We will continue to be a match up nightmare and beat up on the dregs of the MAC. We play good D. But this feels like a 25 win team that loses in Cleveland and gets bounced on the road in first round of NIT.

JMO.

Now if Toledo wets the bed in Cleveland before playing us in the finals then all bets are off. But who sees this team beating a Villanova or Michigan St or Michigan right now?

I guess that’s one way to feel better about getting pummeled again, but I doubt 20-year-olds really care about what happened two years ago, let alone 40 years ago.

Weird things happen in the tournament more often than not, but right now it’s really hard to see Toledo losing there. They play hard, execute a strong defensive game plan and they have the best player in the league in Rollins. And oh yeah, he’s complemented by a ton of dynamic guys around him. Most notably Shumate, who put on a clinic of fundamental skills on both ends of the floor.

The biggest difference that I noticed is that their guards played up and over us and our guards tried to play up and under. Not sure how to describe it any other way but it was quite noticeable.

Man, they just cleaned our clock, again. I feel like the Chiefs fans trying to understand how the Bengals beat them twice.
That one is easy. It’s all about matchups and the Bengals had Burrow

Shumate - BVP & Carter have to lock him down and get him off the court (See UT vs Testicle State game) - Period. Maybe some other parts needed - But this one is KEY! Then BVP & Carter have Much better opps to execute in The Paint (Carter from Michigan 3's just Stoopid tonight - most all Way early in the shot clock) - BVP did not even have many opps to shoot long 3's from Michigan or Wisconsin...Poor game plan execution the way I see it.....

I was at the Toledo game in Athens and watched the Toledo team walk off the court post game without shaking hands. I thought it may have been some weird covid thing but it was obvious by Boals reaction that he wasn’t expecting that.

It appeared on TV last night that we walked off the court post game.

Just curious if something is triggering that

Right! This is the tail end of the condensed schedule and part of a three game condensed read trip. These are not as easy as they would otherwise look on paper.

Yeah, this was it. We played a typical game for us other than they made us look awful here. Well, that and we missed more free throws than usual.

If you've only watched Toledo versus Ohio, which is the majority of us on this board...you'd think they're simply unbeatable. We haven't really seen any flaws. Well coached, athletic, good shooting. But as evidenced by their 2 losses plus another near loss at Miami, they are not as perfect as we've seen them.

That said, their remaining schedule is much easier than ours with more home games and weaker opponents. The only spot that looks like a tough one is at Buffalo. Meanwhile Ohio has more road games and less cupcakes remaining. It is hard to see a scenario where we win the regular season title.

Craziest stat of the night for me is the Bobcats were PLUS 12 on turnovers and took 12 more shots on the night while losing by 15. That is tough to do. The threes weren't great despite Tommy's hot streak, but the real issue was 30.5% from 2 and 53.8% from 1. TONS of makeable misses in the paint from Carter, Roderick, BVP. Sears with plenty of misses too but those were more of the poor/tough shot variety.

Mark Sears lowest point totals of the season:

Kentucky- 10 (2 for 11)
LSU - 11 (4 for 18)
Toledo - 13 (5 for 19)
Ball St - 13 (4 for 8)
Toledo - 14 (5 for 13)

That makes him 16 for 61 (26%) against the 3 best teams we've played. I'm as big of a believer in Mark as anyone, but it's clear there needs to be an adjustment to his approach when facing better teams. He has become so accustomed to just carving thru the paint and getting buckets that in these tougher games he has ran into several walls. A lot of that is just better coaching and preparation of the opponent than we get from some of the weaker opponents. Need to work on the drive and dish for the next time we see these guys.

Kind of crazy that we let a guy like Shumate get 7 blocks and a guard like Rollins grab 16 rebounds. Also, pretty incredible that Sears took 19 shots and never made it to the foul line.

Never thought I would see Tommy Schmock lead the team in scoring. The threes from Tommy were of course great and kept us from getting completely embarrassed, but the 4 steals were really great. Sorry but Ezuma scares the crap out of me every time he gets the ball, not to mention all the off the ball fouls this season.

We feel vulnerable these next 2 games this week. After the last disappointment we had some softies at home to fall on and get rolling again. Very interested to see how they respond on the road tomorrow. If we can survive with 2 wins then we can talk about still contending for that regular season title ala the 2013 season.

I don't think you're reading the situation right. It is indeed a dumb Covid thing, it appears to be a MAC policy because I saw Wisconsin & MSU shake hands traditionally but each MAC game they've done awkward waves to each other. The broadcast showed Kowalczyk and several UT players kindly and positively gesturing to the Ohio bench at the end. I think these 2 coaches and teams respect each other.

This. Good analysis IMHO. I've heard too many BAers whine that UT is just too good for us, I disagree. We haven't been prepared for either game mentally and game plans were not clear or obviously effective. That's on coaching staff. We have an A game UT hasn't come close to seeing, and outside of turnovers they have played extremely well, especially shooting well above their averages especially from 2. I look forward to another crack at them and like our chances.

My concern this next week is fatigue, we looked tired last night, especially Sears. Again, coaching, he's played too many minutes to date. The rebounding disparity is the most obvious sign we couldn't bring the necessary effort and Rollins getting 16 is absolutely unacceptable. We did not crash boards or get bodies on people.

Not sure what some are seeing from IJ except size and potential, I agree with Ruck that he makes me nervous even 3 feet from hoop with size advantage, he's got a ways to go.

Need to see the staff is getting through to players these next few games with execution and game plan. Mark has to bring more distributing point guard mentality especially diving into lane 1 on 3 against the trees. Head up, think pass not bucket.

They challenged us to beat them with 3's and packed in low. Smart coaching. That "other" game you claim we have is only effective when we're not throwing up bricks. I was disappointed that Boals didn't have us pounding the ball inside consistently in the first 10-12 minutes. We came out and played exactly the type of game they had hoped for.

This season is feeling a lot like that first year under JC after the Sweet 16 run. We beat everyone in the MAC in the regular season except Akron. Then we beat everyone in Cleveland...except Akron. Just feels like they've got our number right now.
