He had a special team. He is no longer a special coach. Since leaving Athens his late February/March record is average at best.
Groce had some spectacular recruits like Cooper and always aimed high (dude inked Caris LeVert!). He also took risks on transfers like Bassett, who gave us a month of glory and left Athens with a rap sheet and kept adding to it after. Swinging for the fences and taking risks on guys like Bassett can produce dramatic success but it's not without pitfalls and not necessarily a blueprint for a sustainable and strong mid-major program.
He did get some great recruits - don't forget Caris Lavert. But it's easier to attract those recruits when you're perceived as a rising star in the coaching ranks as opposed to being in decline. He's not recruiting fabulous freshman to Akron. His best current player is Freeman, a walk-on who asked for a tryout and was seen as little more than an extra body for practice.
In all fairness, COVID hurt Akron worst of all MAC teams in 2020. They were the favorite to go to the Dance, sure upsets happen. But they had a very solid line-up and and a premier scorer in LCJ.

True....but man...we had it rolling going into that game. I still think we would have defeated them in the quarters.

Hey all I pulled the trigger and bought a ticket for this one. Had to support this team for the season they’re having, but I have a few questions. 1) What is the parking situation like around the arena; how soon are the lots open for the game? 2) What’s current covid etiquette/mask policy? 3) What’s the beer/concession situation right now? It’s been a couple years since I’ve been to a game. But don’t worry I’ll navigate just fine around Court Street.

Parking: The Peden lot or by the west green dorms/garages are paid lots that are close and $5(I think), I usually get there about an hour before opening tip and they’re charging then. Venturing back a little further on west green (by the softball/baseball fields) are free if you’re okay walking from there to the main entrance. All the lots immediately surrounding the Convo are donor/pass lots.

Masks: required on campus but nobody seems to really say anything in the Convo at games.

Concessions: open

Planning to get there early, but has anyone seen anything on when the Senior Night recognition ceremony will begin other than "Pre-Game"?

Edit - Thanks GroverBall

I don't know if they read this message board but a quick message to the four seniors:
Johnny T: You have been the huddle leader and the biggest and baddest Bobcat this side of Colin Granger. Thank you for representing the Cats all of these years. I am sure you will be successful in the future with your positivity and passion.
J-C: Thank you for returning to us for your final year. I understand your decision to leave and go to Xavier. I always rooted for you and wanted the best. To have you this year in what would have been a "gap" year without DW3, your presence was amazing. You fit in with the guys and represented yet again!
Tommy Triple: Thank you also for spending your final college season with us. Your accomplishments at Findlay were amazing in their own right but you have shown that you belong at the Division I level and my only regret is that we didn't get you sooner!
BVP: Please come back for another year. I never thought someone could surpass my fanhood for Walter Offutt but you have taken it over. You love OU, you have repped us statistically and educationally and you have risen to the ranks of one of our best ever. Thank you.

The Mark Sears collapse against any quality team is mind boggling. Team looks slow.

What is better, the CBI or CIT? And I think Ben Roderick is a great human being but have we witnessed a greater collapse in the past 25 years?

How is this team so bad against anyone good? And it is not just a loss -- we get rolled by anyone good. Sears has a lot to learn. Carter looks like Carter Lite compared to beginning of year and how is IJ not PLAYING MORE???????????

They way they have played the last month is extremely disheartening. Teams finally decided to double Sears and BVP when they touch the ball and we have no answer....As well as I thought Boals was coaching earlier this year to keep them locked in for lesser opponents, it has been equally as bad during this stretch. No confidence in Feb/March, I hope I eat my words but will be stunned if they win more than one game in the Mac tournament.

I blame Ivo's collapse on Christian. I think he broke Ivo. B-Rod is so inexplicable. And where the heck is Lundo? And why no notice on DW3? Boals is great but come on man!

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Carter is nonexistent on the defensive end.

May be time to just pump the brakes on the Boals as god/genius train.
