Looks like we’re gonna try our best to play five minutes of basketball. Too bad we didn’t do anything like that the first 35.

Bowling Green has the kind of players I’d like to see us have. While we are a bit more athletic this year we just do not seem to have good basketball IQ. We just make a lot of dumb, defensive and offensive decisions. That includes taking bad shots and playing bad switching defense.
A lot of BG’s roster ascends from the lower levels. Searls aside, that hasn’t been an area we’ve pulled and/or talent advantage of in the portal thus far. We need to, though.

I agree. What is wrong with Elliott and Conners? Both show no aptitude for offense. When they are in it is easy to guard us. Elliott was explosive last year. I am sick of guys regressing or not developing at all. And Simmons needs to realize he has been a$$ this year so quit whining.

Hadaway, 11 shots with eight from three-point range? I guess he doesn’t wanna play in the lane anymore.

And, six assists with 15 turnovers. What a great ratio.

I think Hadaway has chosen the AJ Clayton route but does not realize he isn't AJC from outside.

Teams now will trap Pav constantly and know Ohio has no idea what to do.

Echo the thoughts on E2 and Conners. Both continue to be atrocious.

Except for the last five minutes this was one of the worst games I've ever watched. We went almost 12 minutes with no field goals. During that time we went 0-for-a-bizzilion from 3, and couldn't even hit the broadside of a battleship, with many airballs and the like. We have no rhythm as team, everything seems so helter-skelter. I know Boals doesn't like set plays as a general rule, but having a team looking so disorganized is boarding on coaching malpractice, IMHO.

Walking Bucket and Evans not even sniffing rotation during game one of the conference season. File this under not developing at all.

BG, at every position, seemingly had a man going up against a boy. The Falcons were longer, stronger and more athletic. And, as much as I hate to say it, Towns played lock-down defense on Hadaway.

A lot of OUr performance, today and this year, is on Boals. Several reasons have been mentioned already.

But two more points from today's loss:

Terrible out-of-bounds defense: BG had the ball under their own bucket with 1 second on the shot clock and Boals had Kelly guarding Towns near the bucket. Towns, with too much length for Kelly, easily caught the lob pass and got an easy uncontested look for the basket; BG took the ball out at midcourt and found an unguarded man in the corner for the uncontested 3-pointer before some of our defenders could find their man; later in the game, BG took the ball out with 4 seconds left on the shot clock and EE fouled their shooter with a second on the shot clock, giving him 3 foul shots.

Down 17-19 points and we switch to zone defense. BG happily runs clock, then gets the rebound of their own missed shot for a new shot clock. Happened on more than a couple of possessions.

I am thinking it really boils down to a recruiting issue. If Bowling Green can get those kinds of players, there’s absolutely no reason why we can’t.

That was disappointing to watch from warmup all the way until the end. I'm starting to really question leadership both from the top to the players. My wife and I both noticed just a complete lack of attention to detail starting in warmups. Our guys compared to their guys were just complete opposite. On their side they are running an organized warmup, everybody is wearing the same team issued gear, locking in on the task at hand.

Then you look to our side, every guy is wearing something different, looks like a bunch of guys at ping playing pickup. We're just walking through the layup lines screwing around trying to hold a dunk contest. Sloppy, ugly, lack of care, etc. Where is the attention to detail? Everything matters at this level but that's a concept this team has no clue of.

I get its warm ups and you could say I'm nitpicking but winning starts as soon as you show up to the gym, not just when the whistle blows.

We seem to care more about screaming at a ref or the other team than actually holding each other accountable and stepping up the level of play.

You aren't nitpicking at all and I've noticed this as well. I know it's only one game, but the way they played against BG feels like it erases any good feelings the previous four games provided.

The are just so many disappointments as others have mentioned. E2....Simmons....Conners...Sheldon...inconsistent Captain Chaos and shooting way too many 3's. Simmons is a mystery to me. How many times is he going to bully down low and bang a 4 footer off the backboard? He likes to showboat and talk crap to the other team whether we are up 10 or down 35....mind-boggling.

Walking bucket and Evans lack of development up to this point has everyone questioning if they can even play at this level. I don't see it ever happening.

Moving forward....I have a hard time seeing this team beating the top tier teams in conference: Akron, Miami, Kent, BG. Buffalo, Toledo and UMASS will be struggles as well.

I can't imagine Bowling Green NIL budget is much different from ours yet we got our ass kicked on our home court in year 7 of Boals.

It's all very frustrating.

I agree with everything you are saying and will add an additional thought of my own about an apparent leadership decision.

Has anyone else paid any attention to the music that is played before the game? I don’t consider myself a prude but it is not for an inclusive audience. It is especially something young kids (you know, potential fans for whom parents make the decision as to whether or not they become fans by taking them to games) shouldn’t be hearing. I know some will say they’ll hear it anyway elsewhere. That’s probably true but it doesn’t excuse doing it publicly for a broad spectrum of people at a university sanctioned event. I know of people who are not going to games now because of it. If people have to have it, wear ear buds.

My two oldest granddaughters start for the Athens varsity volleyball team so we go to a lot of games. This year they played a team that they used to compete against in the old SEOAL. Athens runs a very good program but the discipline and routine that we saw in the Gallia team was off the charts. It looked like a scripted Broadway production - impressive from the moment they took the court for warmups till the first serve. In the regular season this year - 22 matches - they were undefeated.

That sort of discipline starts with the coach and the atmosphere they create and the team buy in. Sounds like we need to travel down to Galliapolis to see how it's done.

There is a scientific study out that proves when a fan(atic)’s team loses they believe the reason is they didn’t want it badly enough or tried hard enough.

Thank you. I have been complaining about our warmup regimen for more than a year. It should be noted that Jalen Breath missed three games this year after suffering a groin injury during the BS pregame dunk contest. This team has no discipline.

I agree. Some of the music yesterday was downright crude to put it nicely. I remember several years ago one BAer posted links to some rap songs that he had put together that were OHIO basketball centric. If you want a contemporary sound, why not play those?

If it takes music to get the players pumped up, we've got a problem. I was at a volleyball match at Nelsonville earlier this year and the "soundtrack" for the night was outstanding. Everyone young and old was into it. That's what the fans in the stands want to hear, not the stuff that some amateur DJ on the sound board wants to pump out especially from December 13 to January 8 this year.

a game like this has me thinking that boals the player may be better than boals the coach. i thought for sure that him having played for larry hunter he,d have been coaching the way hunter did. thats not the case here. larry recruited good interior players like gary trent, curtis simmons and diante flenoral. he complimented those guys with strong shooters like gus jhonson and acouple others.
he ran good offense style and defense at times was good. plus he never used excuses for not scheduling decent non con teams. he just did it. boals has done things way different and the results speak for themselves.

Every criticism is valid watching this game. But in the end I find myself just muttering, “They simply can’t shoot.”

Open shots that are three feet off line. In their own gym. They can’t shoot.

Pav scored 8 in the first 5 minutes, what a clutch adjustment by BG to start doubling him...boy did it work to perfection. We didn't adjust at all. Blatant predictable double teaming all game. Despite only 3 defenders on the other 4, no one ever got open. JP handled it fine and it did not result in turnovers...how do we not fire a pass to an open man after JP clears? It was so frustrating.

We continue to just not be able to penetrate with our bigs in the paint. Hadaway taking too many threes and Simmons not able to create high percentage shots. Meanwhile still no one is shooting the 3 well (18% yuck). Our bigs can't seem to get to the glass with any consistency, we can't hit 3 pointers, and our only guy that can actually hit mid-range jumpers is drawing double teams.

We need more Kuany. He is an exciting and dynamic infusion, would be a great 6th man right now. Instead he only ever plays when Hadaway sits, which is never going to be more than 4-8 minutes per game. Still really think this kid's ceiling is huge.

I've been a Sheldon supporter but the dumb ass turnovers are getting so old. Conners just can't get going.

We need to win at Central Michigan. If we don't and start 0-2 this could all go downhill quick.

For those that missed it, Sam Towns took it upon himself to do a celebratory dunk after the final whistle. Hadaway sprinted down the court to prevent it and someone stopped him. Simmons was getting into it. Some more words exchanged in the handshake line as well. Boals seems to refuse to even make eye contact with him. It seems it was a top 5 day in the life of Sam Towns. Asshat.
