Our bench isn't that good - we are not going to go down there and get too creative with minutes.

This is a reward for a good season and hard work. These players been thru a lot. 50K is nothing to let the players have a little more basketball and enjoy the sun. This is like a bowl game. Not a bad format to have team and fans go to a spring break destination and have fun. 24 wins third place and reaching MAC semis is a good year for a MAC school. Hope we win a couple games and earn some respect for Ohio and the MAC. CUSA not a bad basketball conference. Rice is an excellent school with very high academic standards.

Last year, wasn't BGSU upset by Stetson in this tournament? I don't want the same outcome for Ohio this year. Go Cats!

Ohio certainly wants the opportunity to give returning players more experience, but that's not the bottom line. Winning the tourney is.
Is it though? Are you positive? Is there some magical big cash prize for the winner we aren't aware of?

You're certainly not getting any extra/added national exposure from this tourney.

Basically playing for pride (one last hurrah for the seniors), having fun and (hopefully not) getting an awkward banner in the Convo (I'd prefer to just add it to the record books) IMO.
You are right, kids and coaches don't really like to win. That's rarely ever their goal.

Who ever said they didn't want to win? Of course they do. It's just not the main focus or point of this trip. This is a reward. One last week in the sun. Sure once the ball is tipped they're going to try and win but this isn't win at all costs. No pressure. There is no grand goal of winning a meaningless tournament. If it happens, cool. Just not even thinking or stressing about it. Go have fun.

It's also why I fully expect to see a longer bench especially/specifically if either team gets a double digit lead. Still trying to win for sure, but not at the expense of fun and experience.

Curious how you know what the point and focus of this trip is?

The clairvoyance of many on this board is legendary. Not only do we receive telepathic insights into the team's thinking, we know exactly what the coach of each sport should do to have an undefeated season. If we were in charge, OHIO would rank #1 in the nation in every sport.

Are there any incentives in Jeff Boals's contract regarding total wins? If so, that could be a slight motivation.

Some specifics:

Former Stony Brook Coach Jeff Boals signed a five-year contract with Ohio that terminates on April 1, 2024. Boals will earn an annual base salary of $581,000.

Boals’ assistant coach salary pool is $341,000 for three assistant coaches.

Boals can earn additional compensation from performance-based incentives:

If Ohio has a winning conference record: $5,000
If Boals wins MAC Coach of the Year: $5,000
If Ohio reaches an agreed-upon APR score: $5,000
If Ohio wins the MAC regular season championship: $10,000
If Ohio wins the MAC Tournament: $10,000
If Ohio makes an NIT appearance: $5,000
If Ohio plays in the NIT championship: $10,000
If Ohio receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament: $10,000
If Ohio wins one or more game(s) in the NCAA Tournament: $10,000 per win
If Ohio reaches the Sweet 16: $30,000
If Ohio reaches the Final Four: $75,000
If Ohio wins the national championship: $100,000

That awkward banner would look great in the parking area below the Convo.

About the only thing likable about this tournament is that it is a lot like the MAC Tournament with 16 teams instead of eight.

If we win this thing, nobody is going to remember this at all 20 years from now, but they will still remember the pre-season NIT Championship Trent led team.

We can spin this anyway we want too, but winning whatever they call this tournament isn't going to earn Ohio or the MAC respect. You earn respect by beating an LSU or Kentucky or Virginia in the NCAA Tournament. All this tournament does is give the program a chance to reach 28 wins. That's it.

Better than being Kent State and placed into whatever backwoods tournament they are in.

If a penny-pinching outfit like MTSU that "couldn't afford" to join the MAC can shell out the 50k, any school should be able to pull it off. Who knows how much they have lost on going to "bowl games" in football.

No matter what happens - I just want us to go out there and try our best. Yes, this is a reward for one of the best seasons in our history. Yes, I'm still mad about losing to Kent. I wish the CBI still did the higher seed home advantage format so we could get one more game at the Convo. BUT, I think we should try and win this tournament even though I feel like it's a "losers" tournament and try to give Carter and Schmock a nice send off game(s).

Assuming that you play for championships, this would rank as the 20th best season at best. We've won 14 regular season championship and 5 MAC tourney championships where we didn't win the regular season. Additionally we went to 4 NIT tournaments when we didn't win the MAC regular season or tourney.

It would be an entertaining off-season distraction for the contributors on BobcatAttack to rank the 20 best Ohio Men’s Basketball seasons.

Do I remember that part of Groce's contract included playing CIT/CBI games if they were available? Seems that he said in one of his interviews that he had negotiated that when he was hired because he saw value in the experience.
