After Akron wins its first game in the tourney, please place all of your speculation about JG's next destination right here. I'm doing this as a public service so as not to contaminant every thread with this stuff.

If he wins only one game, he stays at Akron. It took a Sweet 16 run and taking UNC into OT to get him the Illinois gig. A first-round win at the Dance wouldn't mean much. He used to be an up-and-comer, but at 51 and after his mediocre tenure at Illinois, most "P" schools would pass. Maybe ECU or Tulsa (if you consider them "P"s), but probably nobody else.

Old news. No longer is he the hot young coach or an up and comer and he does not have the cachet of being a former winner at a big program. No worries. His kids will graduate from Revere unless he makes a deep and totally surprising run. He can coach but he does not seem to recruit as hard as he used to and it does not seem like he has surrounded himself with staff that makes him look like a superstar.

Unfortunately, in this down year for the MAC the 4th seed winning probably means a 14 seed and a top 12 opponent. I think they will lose.

I could see him taking a lateral job just to get in with a university on more stable financial standing.

Akron has never won an NCAA tournament game. I don’t think it happens this year, either.

Well, after watching Akron get their arms taken off and being beat with them in the first half of the WV charity game during the preseason, I stand corrected with regards to just how good this Akron team could be. One’s in the tourney and one isn’t… Not to say that WV wouldn’t beat them more often than not head to head but…

BTW, didn’t Akron lose one of their main guards (Trimble I think), a week or two ago? Heck of an adjustment by Groce… Addition by subtraction I would guess.

He was also far from their first choice. Multiple coaches were offered before Groce, but none wanted it.

Duquesne job's pay is about the same as Groce's current gig, though he might consider a move for a new challenge in a nice city. I doubt the Duquesne admin would go for two straight Akron coaches, though, since Dambrot has struggled. Too bad...I thought he would turn that program around.

It was more a petty jab at Dambrot than thinking Groce would make that move.

I assume Groce would have to make several trips to the NCAAs to get back on the P6 radar.

I always root for the MAC in the Big Dance, but I don't think Akron pulls off the upset here. If they do, I look forward to the *TOS to Akron* thread.

Dambrot is making 1M at Duquesne. I doubt Groce is making that much at Akron. Both schools are crazy for paying that much.

There it is. I figured we would get the "paid too much" post in here somewhere this week. 😉

Totally agree. And if Akron loses John, they'd probably be in trouble.

And if you're Groce, for the reason you state alone, you're telling your agent that you're in the market for any good lateral move out there.

An 80% pay increase is not lateral.

Might not be a lateral move or a P6 job, but there are plenty of other programs out there that pay more than Akron. I could easily see Groce in an A-10 job.

Well, I live in Pittsburgh and have attended Duquesne games. I hate to tell you that the crowds are sparse and there is not much interest in the program in the city. Pitt gets top billing and Duquesne and Robert Morris are an afterthought. Maybe they suffer from the same delusions that afflict many on this board. Just pay the coach big money and the program is elevated.

Should be paid no more than a dean . . . there I got the other one in.

We finally agree!

What is Duquesne getting by paying Dambrot 1M other than the ire of the faculty?

Back to Akron, I'm not sure they could have gotten a much worse draw. Original speculation I was seeing had them facing Wisconsin, and I actually thought they might be able to keep it close with them. Instead they draw UCLA, who returned nearly the entire roster from last year's Final 4 team. When you look at the main guys in UCLA's rotation, it's nearly all 3rd and 4th year guys. They are experienced, they are extremely talented, they are battle tested, and you have to play them on the West coast. Yikes.

Not a very good sample, but I watched the second half of two UCLA games this year. Though they won, they seemed to have kind of a sloppy style of play that led to a lot of turnovers. They made up for their turnovers by making a high percentage of their shots. The key for Akron, IMHO, is to ratchet up their defense and get points off turnovers. Possible?
