Once upon a time I was endlessly scrolling through Instagram and came across a video of our beloved Jason Carter doing a "paid partnership" reel for the Jason Men's collection (face wash, shampoo, etc.).

I literally have no idea how much something like would pay you, whether that be $$ or product, but I mean it's an opportunity nonetheless.

But seriously, this is probably the first time that I've actually seen a "paid promotion" or NIL type of thing on social media for a Bobcat (besides selling clothing with their name and number on it).

A few have a deal with a local food prep service. They post a code on IG story for 10% off.

Sorry this might be a hijacking of your post.

Surprise, surprise, surprise. April 18th and the NIL receivers are for the first time learning that they cannot keep everything they receive. The Tax Man stands ready to get his share.

WSJ article yesterday interviews several Arkansas players and their experience.

Former CAV, JR Smith inks NIL deal during his freshman year at North Carolina A&T playing on the school's golf team.

The fall semester he earned a 4.0 GPA.

Former NBA Champ now teeing it up in college!

Wondering if good old JR takes his shirt off after the 18th hole to celebrate a victory.

+1 (if he has a victory). Shirt instead of hat, right before shaking hands with opponents!

Biggest one yet.

https://twitter.com/JohnHRuiz/status/1517947722086686720

400K per year

plus a car....

Looking at that plus what Alabama is paying football players. Hope there are some classes in contract management and financial planning. Wonder how much he has to give his handlers and posse over the next 2 years....or should I say...how much they will take. One the heels of Richard Jefferson's trusted sidekick taking 5Mil of his money you got to wonder how the fringe connections are going to make off the players.

There used to be an unwritten rule back in the day that said a school wouldn’t pay their coaches more than the president. Texas A&M broke that rule when they hired Johnny Majors. It’s been escalating ever since and this NIL business was going to happen eventually.

Yes, in this regard, it is instructive to look at Woody Hayes' salaries back in the prime of his career. I do agree with you that coaches salaries have gotten way out of line. I actually didn't mind it when Frank was hired at a salary that was a little higher than McDavis' salary, but Sabin's contract at Alabama is borderline obscene. I don't know when, but eventually there will be a day of reckoning on this issue. This whole college athletic system will fall apart and disintegrate before your eyes like the old USSR did in the last century. Hopefully, what will replace it will be better than the Russian Federation.

From my perspective, the Sabin's of the world -- coaches whose programs generate the revenue to justify their salaries -- aren't really the problem. I like markets.

But it's silly to me how many non-revenue generating programs make their coaches the highest paid employee at their schools. Saban and Alabama Football are a cash cow for the University. It makes the University better, and is a smart strategic move.

I'm not a lawyer, but wouldn't this be collusion? This sounds like wage fixing. If so, are you claiming the good ole days are when colleges used to break the law?

This era was before all the revenue explosion in the P5. There was a prevailing doctrine that the president should be the highest paid university employee. Of course, the head football and basketball coaches at the most successful programs were getting soft money in the form of free car leases for the coach and wife, clothing at local stores and many a free dinner and movie. And who knows how many booster under the table benefits?

In 1981 I moved to Ann Arbor and in the paper it announced the salaries at U of Michigan. President- 105k, Bo Schembechler -100k

Not saying it's good or bad. But where we are today it's not surprising the players want some coin.

Great article! I misspoke when I said Johnny Majors. It was Sherrill. I knew it was a former Pitt coach.

Thank you, BTC. Yes, that was very interesting. I did spot one error. The number of colleges playing football in 1892 was grossly underestimated. I think the author may have just been looking at the eastern schools, and not those out here in the West as they said in those days. But even in the wilds of Athens they were playing football in that last decade of the 19th century.

This guy is a super booster: "Ruiz has 111 deals signed or pending with Hurricanes athletes to promote his companies, LifeWallet and Cigarette Racing, according to a report in the Miami Herald on Wednesday."

And good luck to Wong, because there are not that many Ruiz's out there, and he's wanting upwards of $400K for the year. But, poor guy signed a contract.

""Isaiah is under contract," Ruiz said in a text message to ESPN. "He has been treated by LifeWallet exceptionally well. If that is what he decides, I wish him well, however, I DO NOT renegotiate! I cannot disclose the amount, but what I can say is that he was treated very fairly."

One thing I am disliking about the media in these stories, is they keep reflecting back to the NCAA this and NCAA that in regards to NIL. NIL, has been legislated into law, nothing the NCAA can do to stop or regulate the law. It is what it is. Happy hunting to the players. Will be interesting to see guys like Wong force themselves into situations where they are looking for a school because of their inflated self values.

Why not? The schools have nothing to do with this, cannot negotiate contracts, and contracts are by law prohibited to be based on production.

What you say is theoretically true, but it sort of reminds me of 19th Century “ringers,” where an outsider paid someone to play in a college game. Sometimes the player wasn’t even a student at the school, just some hired dude off the local YMCA team or something. Today, these kids have to be enrolled in school, but from some of the statements I’ve seen education seems a rather secondary pursuit. And, you know that they’ll be cheating and that some coaches will line up contracts for their players, or have one of their assistants to do it, or talk to the local car dealer and get it done. This is a rabbit hole. I guess we’ll find out where the bottom is sooner or later.

In the core men's sports, education has been secondary for many for quite some time. And you cannot legislate morality.
