Maybe BVP and Sears present an opportunity to field a more competitive team and maybe the player movement will be a net positive for good Mid-Major Programs.

It's not like we made a tourney run with these guys as the main cogs of the team. In fact, the team underachieved this year after an impressive start. So running it back with a few untested freshmen and the same group is like thinking you are going to make the Superbowl with the Jags based on player development. It won't happen.

Hear me out - there are a finite number of DI scholarships and now you have all of these 'good' Mid-Major players looking to jump to P5/6 conferences. They will be taking spots of other portal transferees and/or higher-level high school recruits that would ordinarily land with a P5/6 school. Those recruits/transferees will then look for other lower-level (mid-major) opportunities. Thus if you take this as an opportunity to be the best landing spot among your competitors, you can differentiate yourself at the level at which you compete. Let's be honest the only way to get to the tourney anyway is to either win the MAC (rarely gets in these days) or win the tourney. All your competition is dealing with the same stuff so maybe Boals' strategy needs to change in his mix of recruiting and how he gives flexibility for the eventuality of this player movement and reshape the team to be more competitive next year. My glass half-full observation...

Saw a post yesterday on Twitter about a high school athlete complaining about the portal. He had offers rescinded due to teams taking players in the portal. The MAC could be the minor leagues of NCAA Basketball.

Agree JAF - nothing has changed for an objective standpoint - be better than the rest of the MAC in assembling, managing and coaching a team. The "'battle" for players will now take place 24/7 - the programs that offer opportunities to players will continue to have success - in fact, will someone please get Logan Paul on the phone.

another unintended consequence here, and it is playing out across the country, is high school kids are ones hurt here.

My son just played in an All-Star game on Tuesday where he was only 1 of 3 players out of 20 that have committed to a college next year. It's a hot mess out there for recruiting. A lot of kids have held out for higher offers and are going to be left holding the bag. We looked into Prep School options in the Fall and the slots for those are tough to get as well. One of the kids on his team is actually taking a gap year and just playing AAU ball.

This was always a clear impact of the NCAA giving current college players an extra year because of COVID.

Random thought regarding NIL deals: one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that while a NCAA scholarship offer isn't binding and players can transfer as they please NIL deals could be multiple-year contracts contingent on players remaining at a certain school.........

Not technically! NIL can not be contingent upon playing time, performance, or attendance to play at any particular school.

But it could be tied to your residence in a particular area or appearances at certain events... Lots of creative lawyer loopholes in business contracts. Someone will exploit that and inevitably there will be high-profile court cases about it...

Are players expected to represent themselves in NIL negotiations? It seems pretty unfair to the "student-athlete" to be tasked to negotiate themselves against lawyers or agents. Seems ripe for exploitation (not that athletes weren't already exploited)

It's a free market. With the value of most of these deals, not sure they could afford the consultation with a lawyer. They are not allowed an agent.

Ohio Legal Services would be a great resource for our athletes. When I was there they provided free consultations to students

The program in my estimation is light years from where it was pre Gary Trent. Pretty much all of the games are on TV (CBS Sports, ESPN+, ESPN3). Mostly streamed but today streaming is mainstream. Convo is remodeled and has hanging scoreboard.

Pay is adequate for a serious mid major and ranks at the top of the conference. Its where you rank more so in a conference more so than how often that second bid comes through. Having a regional conference tournament no doubt helps. Its a good setup. Before Trent's time and during it the tournament was in Toledo (lame-o). Ohio basketball program today should be attractive in the portal wars.

Include me in the group that doesn't think the hot mess of transfers will necessarily destroy Ohio basketball going forward. I'm not going to claim it's a good thing for us, but I think there are opportunities to work with and around this new reality to still field good teams. They'll be less loved teams, with all the rent-a-players, but they could still be good teams.

Yes, that's correct. He's playing at Susquehanna University (D3) next year. Another kid is playing at Pfeiffer (D3) and the third kid is playing basketball and football at Bowie State (D2). The remaining 17 kids have not committed. 9 of those are DC All-Met performers and I'm sure will end up somewhere. I do know that one of the kids in his division (1st team all-division) is planning on just doing a gap year and try again for next year.

My son had actually toyed with the idea of trying to walk-on at Ohio and my wife was really pushing it because he could get in-state tuition since I'm an alum. It ended up being his cheapest option including the Maryland schools he applied to but decided against it for a couple of reasons. One, he wants to play and two, they just brought in Chad Estis' son and they are similar players. He's a 6'2" (legit) 185lb PG. He was hampered by the fact that his entire high school career totaled 16 games (torn ACL wiped out sophomore and junior seasons). But funny thing happened on the way. I fell in love with D3 basketball. Unlike D1 it isn't trying to emulate the NBA and I hope it never does.

FInding a fit is what it is all about. Kids make a choice and we stick by them and watch them succeed or not. Glad he is looking at the PT is a major part of his approach. Unfortunate injury background as it affects the recruitment process. Bottom line is that chance to get an education and a chance to play. Congrats. Be sure to post up results as they happen.

Just providing an update. One of the kids who held two D1 offers (Bryant was one of them, don't remember the other but similar) last year just signed with a D2 team, another kid who had two HBCU D1 offers as a sophomore just signed with a D3 program and another is going to VPI as a preferred walk-on. Can't find any definitive information on the rest of the kids. This includes our County POTY, Gio Moore, who in a normal year would have D1 programs lined up at his door. He's a legit 6'6" wing who averaged 22 ppg and 8.4 rpg. And the only offer that has been reported as far as I can tell is from an NAIA program (Jarvis Christian College). And these kids are not early bloomers that plateaued later in their careers. These kids had excellent Senior seasons. Will be interesting to see what the new "normal" is when the dust finally settles.

OUVan, and others, do you think this is due to the portal? Or to the extra year due to COVID? I'm thinking the latter. If so, it should be only temporary, no?
