I wouldn't say I am angry at Mark, but as I said already...I am naively clinging to the idea that loyalty and pride with your teammates & schools should still be a thing. I don't want to explicitly wish ill upon Mark...however I still argue it is in our best interest that he and others like him struggle in whatever chapter follows leaving us. I'd like to be able to point to Jason Preston as the NBA guard Ohio Bobcat and Jaaron Simmons & Mark Sears as guys who saw their career success end the day they left Athens county.

Given the disarray we are reading about in Oats Locker room it seems Mr. Sears may get plenty of PT. Who you surround yourself with in life is the limit of how far you will go. If Oats has to go into full blown scramble Sears is a good choice but given the amount of friction throwing new bodies on the fire seems a little unwise.

I wonder what Alabama fans think about this if they have a forum. I’ve seen mostly praise and excitement with a few angry ones stating what is Oats doing his flaws he showed here could cost them / he’s a garbage player

I'm glad these guys have the freedom to do what they think is best for them. If you want to leave your job you can. Coaches can leave for another school. Professors and presidents can resign and leave. A bartender can go from Swanky's to the Cat's Den.

On one hand the coach is just leaving a job for another job, same with profs and presidents. School have committed money and time into a player. Schools have a vested interest in keeping the athlete as they have committed academic time toward a program they offer, college provided resources ranging from weightrooms and nutrition to gear and tutoring as well as money into the project. Those investments are for the present as well as into the future as you build a team and continuity into the future. Everyone would like to make these guys look like slave labor that gets nothing in return but even someone like you has to acknowledge that the education you were afforded in return for your scholarship had an intrinsic value compared to your fellow Ohio students that payed for their education with their own money for years into the future. In my eyes that is what seperates the athlete from a bartender. It is myopic and short sighted to think in that narrowed view of employee-employer relationship when you are discussing Student-Athletes who are not paying taxes or having to meet employment standards.

A few years ago Jimmy John's tried to enforce a non-compete clause on their sub makers. That went over like the proverbial turd in a punchbowl.

The one thing missing from the coaching analogy is the buyout. That's a deterrent for coaching changes, at least for most schools. I'm sure someone will come up with something similar to slow down player transfers. At last count there were over 1,000 players in the portal, about three per D1 school. I think LSU had 11.

Many a school invest for more in their coach than they do their players.

Not surprised at Sears leaving. His parents come to almost every game - hell of a lot easier to do that in Alabama. Plus remember he probably grew up a Tide fan - tough to break that bond - as evident by all the OSU gear on campus and the number of students watching the Buckeyes in a dorm room rather than the Bobcats in person.

Wasn’t really true for basketball this year - lots of students showed up at the Convo this year.

Ohio, we'd better keep a wheelbarrow full of grapes in the back yard from now on.

I hope he does well at Alabama. SEC and close to his home so his family can easily get to games.

Now we just need to hit the portal and do the same thing Alabama did to us.
Agreed. In this case, people are acting like Sears is doing something horrible when he's simply choosing a circumstance that by all accounts is better for himself and his family. Time will tell on PT and pro opportunities, but in the near term, he's playing close to home at a P5 school and putting money in his pocket. Call me crazy, but that sounds pretty good for him. I hate what the new transfer rules appear to be doing to mid-major hoops but I'm not going to lash out at individual players over it.

Absolutely this is a good move for himself but it also certainly tarnishes his reputation as a Bobcat.

The interview he gave to a random 247 Sports blogger changed the whole outlook of the situation for me.

Just as Mark is well within his rights as a student-athlete to transfer, fans are well within their rights to voice their opinion.

The Sears transfer is VERY different than the Simmons transfer.

We can't necessarily infer from his interview comments that he meant he didn't have a good situation at Ohio. He's talking about what he wants to see at his next destination.

Yep. Classic case of how seeing the same thing through our own lens can really distort things. You can see a lot of examples of this reading threads in Siberia too.

I tend to compare Sears to DJ because both had few offers coming out of HS but drew some "P" attention based on their performance on the court at Ohio. Coming out of HS, DJ had offers from Ohio, Kent and Loyola of Chicago but chose Ohio because he knew Groce. After the win over Gtown in the NCAA tourney, he was courted (informally, we understand) by Bruce Pearl at Tenn, who had the chance to see DJ first-hand at the NCAA tourney. DJ chose to stay with Ohio. Granted, it was a different world back then. Who knows what would've happened if there was a portal back then.

Coming out of HS, Sears had offers from Ohio, UAB and SBama. He chose Ohio, presumably because Boals presented a better case than the other two schools. After one terrific season as a starter at Ohio, he entered the portal and immediately drew a lot of attention from "P"s, then moved on.

Simmons was different because he wasn't an original Ohio recruit. He transferred here from Houston where he had little PT, sat out a year, had two good years at Ohio, then transferred to Mich, where he got even less PT than he had at Houston. He apparently got what he wanted == to play in a national title game, even if it was for three minutes out of the 44 total minutes he played in the six NCAA tourney games that year.

My loyalty to an Ohio Bobcat athlete goes just as far as his or her loyalty to Ohio — no more, no less.

Some exceptions made for a graduate transfer that actually has degrees from Ohio.

I do not look at his symmetrically. I welcome an incoming transfer in with open arms. I’m a real homer, and I know it.

Your mileage may vary! That is, I understand that others view this differently. I’m just stating my position. I don’t really care if you think this is not an intelligent way to look at it. I just wanted to state my attitude on these matters, which predate the portal by decades. I know that thinking of it this way probably places me in a distinct minority. So be it.

247 quotes were a bit over the top. Good luck to Mark at the next level. I just don't see him succeeding as a 6-foot shooting guard who will continue to play the point against P5 competition just about every night. I can't wait to see him enjoy his millions as an NBA player. It's clear he thinks he has the talent to get there. I don't see it. As many others have mentioned here.....google two words....Jaaron Simmons.

I understand the sentiment, but the reality is that due to injury Preston has played 0 minutes of NBA basketball and OU has no substantial history of generating NBA talent.

I hope, of course, that Preston had a long career, makes all star games, and in doing so builds our brand. But given our history, I think diversifying our bets and just generally hoping as many OU basketball affiliated people as possible see success is probably the wiser path.

Agree. I think we need to tell recruits that while we would like to have them for four years, that success at Ohio could position them to land at a high major or NBA. I know this is tough to accept, but it's reality.

Coming out of Hargrave, I think Mark Sears also had an offer from Washington State. I think asst coach Lee Martin was a prime factor in getting him to choose Ohio, because Martin coached Sears at Hargrave

A couple of things about that Sears 247 interview that make me shake my head.

"Alabama's system is very guard oriented and they told me they put guards in the NBA."

Huh?

So let's look at that. The "system" is Oates...who has two guards in the NBA. Also...Primo is a 6-6 athlete. Lewis is 6-3 and lightning fast. Sears is neither. He probably also thinks Colin Sexton is in the NBA from Bama but that was pre-Oates.

I look forward to watching him drive the lane next year and realize that's not Central Michigan down low.

I've also been curious how this has been handled from a PR standpoint. He's allowed his AAU coach to act as his mouthpiece throughout this process. Has anyone seen Sears thank anyone from Ohio for helping him get to where he is heading now?

Don't wish for him to fail, but fans can get bitter over portal transfer situations, especially how it was handled by the player. If Sears makes the "league", I'll come back and eat my words. He's a 6 foot shooting guard and it will be very difficult for him to succeed in the SEC, let alone make the "league".

I’m not sure of your point. If a student athlete is not “slave labor”, then shouldn’t they have the freedom to do what they think is best for them? I cherished my time in Athens and my education and relationships made. I met my wife in Copeland Hall and it turned out to be the best move I ever made! If any of the players would ask my advice, I would tell them it’s better to stay. I think skipping around is like a man without a country. Almost all will not play professionally. Yet, I’m still glad they can do it.

Didn't know that. I am sorry I missed meeting them either at Hargrave or at Ohio. We have had quite a lot of good parents over the years. My sis met Mom at a tourney in Atlanta and sat with her through a few games. My loss I am sure.

Always wonder if these schools actually do more than look at stats when these guys are in the portal???

Let's face it, Sears struggled to the point of practically being a non-factor against the top 3-4 teams in the MAC. Granted, he will probably not be the focal point defensively at Alabama that he was for the Bobcats, but on the other hand he will be guarded, 1-on-1, by better players/athletes in the SEC.

Certainly believe he can be a player on that level ... but doubt he will be a difference-maker beyond a game or two.
